Didn't a bunch of lower level intelligence community members get fired about a month ago for discussing adult topics on internal messaging software? They were guilty of “an egregious violation of trust” and violated “basic rules and standards around professionalism" according to the DNI

What makes this any less of a fireable offense?

The people doing it are all cisgendered heterosexuals?

Well, see, that was using an official secret secure channel for social information.

This is using a social channel for official secret secure information.

Mike Waltz deputy Alex Wong set up the Signal conference. Goldberg, who's Signal identity was also "JG" was (supposedly) mistaken for Jamieson Greer, US Trade Rep (cabinet) who often attends National Security Council meetings. Why is Goldberg in Alex Wong's phone contacts?

Talking to the press is part of many officials’ jobs.

Likely because Wong has a career of more than 20 years in Washington as a legal and political representative in both the private and public sectors, as well as substantial experience in diplomatic, intelligence and defence roles.

That includes time on various senatorial and presidential campaigns, where a big part of the job is staying in contact with the media.

He was appointed as a deputy national security advisor in November 2024, which also includes a substantial amount of interface with the media. His two predecessors in the role were both former journalists.

Okay, it was a mistake by an aid, the mission was successful, it's an app that's been approved for this use, there was no harm from the leak and no one needs to be fired

That depends on the representations that nothing classified was involved.

there was no harm from the leak
The usual threshold for 'harm' that the Trump Administration has been using in the past is "It makes the Trump Administration look bad". That is certainly met in this case.

There are a lot of questions about the app from the commsec people. They have to allow it because users want it, but they're sucking air through clenched teeth the whole time.

And an issue here, besides the fact that it's a primary target for hackers, is that it's easy to misuse accidentally.

Hold tight. A commercial app used on private phones to conduct classified war plan actions is not an approved method by any classification regulation in every intel department.

The saving grace about this whole thing is they haphazardly had journalist in this discussion, otherwise all these intel people would have just carried on as if this was kosher and placing future operations in jeopardy. These intel people are the exact people adversaries target. And those adversaries have enough brain power to infiltrate something like Signal. The journalist should be thanked by the Trump admin instead of the barrel of denigration by Trump et al and their right wing outlets.

Trump's DOJ won't do squat.
The GOP held house, too busy still investigating Hunter Biden, won't do squat.
There are groups suing to force Judiciary to act.
Judge James Boasberg, the current Judge putting the screws to the Trump admin in the deportation case, has officially been assigned that case:

Gm-B9eFWMAAyRIy
What a coincidence. Isn’t he the same Judge that approved a FISA warrant to spy on the Trump campaign based on the Steele Dossier?

I certainly hope those responsible for screwing this up are held accountable at some measure. This obviously was a mistake, and it did not effect the mission. The fact that this occurred on this chat space with the highest authorities involved makes it an authorized space. Even though it's a stupid idea.
In hindsight, perhaps. But I see nothing unreasonable about his initial assumption that it was someone trying to troll him or trap him (Project Veritas style). This is not a scenario that I would expect anyone to immediately perceive as legitimate - a bunch of high-level government officials discussing what should clearly be sensitive or classified information on a commercial messaging app that they just so happened to accidentally invite a journalist into? Pull the other one, it's got bells on. As low as my opinion is of the Trump administration, even I wouldn't have assumed that level of incompetence.

If you don't know that the information you're receiving is classified (because if it was actually classified, why would it be shared on a commercial messaging application?), and you have no way to verify that the people sharing this information are who they claim they are, how could you possibly call that knowingly receiving classified information? Again, as soon as he figured out that it was legitimate, he removed himself from the group.
I dont buy his explanation. I can see a quick what is this? But considering the players involved an editor of a leftist anti Trump news group he knew in short order what it was. He should have exited post haste and let someone know. I dont think he did that. He decided to wait until he had some juicy information that he could write about. Not that I blame him mind you. I think a lot of journalists would do the same thing.

Look I don't know enough about this app or the governments use of it. I can't provide any legit knowledge of its use by the government . And neither can you since you aren't a high level member.

He knew what he was getting. An ethical journalist would have backed out immediately instead of waiting to see where it was going.

And this isn't to let the administratiin off the hook. But since no harm was done i look for this to blow over in relatively short order. With all the players involved this was an authorized chat.

The problem is using an otherwise commonly used chat tool also for classified communications. That's like a surgeon carrying around a pocket knife for whittling wood and, since it's in his pocket anyway, whipping it out to use during surgery.

The application they use for classified communication should be a totally different application from normal usage. It should have a totally different contact list. It should require some specific procedure to initiate. It would be better if on a completely different device, but for Pete's sake, it should at least be attached to a totally different contact list. It should be physically and digitally impossible to invite someone to the chat who wasn't on the proper contact list.

My question is, were these government phones or personal devices?
