Americans Want the U.S. to increase spending in almost every category

You are losing friends all over the planet. These nonsensical tariffs haven't really been imposed yet. It's the calm before the storm.
I am seeing national governments, while taking some time to do so, finally coming around to agree to do what President Trump and Secretary of State Mark Rubio are asking them to do.

Hit the US with tariffs? Stop treating you as loyal allies? Look elsewhere for your goods and services? Boycott US goods? Turn their back on you? Nah, not those. I guess that you mean spend some more on defence. You know, the next time you guys want to go off and right some perceived wrongs and throw your weight around, you might find that you'll be doing it on your own. We all did the right thing in helping out before, even when we thought you were doing the wrong thing.

That'll change. We don't trust you anymore.

The USA has done far more to help our friends and allies than what they have done for us.

You think that it's a plus for the US? The rest of us are watching and thinking 'I didn't know it would get this bad...'
It is head and shoulders better than the last four years - and yes, that is a plus.

It didn't work for me. No matter how great it was statistically it didn't work for a lot of people
Inflation surged to its highest level in over 40 years. Despite recent moderation, consumer prices are up more than 19% overall. Gasoline is up 46%.

Yeah, things are so bad now I am beginning to miss those days already.....(uh-huh)...... ^_^

Most of them were/are our friends only because of what we can, as well as, do for them. We don't need fair weather friends. We don't need a posse that follows us around so long as we pick up tab. We'll keep our money and they can keep their friendship.

Some of us US citizens would prefer to keep our historical good relations going.

As long as those good relations are not dependent upon what and how much we do and give them I would prefer that myself.

Australia, for example, has fought in almost every war in which you have been involved. It's not that we would rely on you. It's us that would turn up to help you. To help a friend. You were a friend worth having. Now it's all transactional. You just want to know what's in it for you.

Yep, we sure are.

Not saying we don't get anything in return but it sure seems like the scales (security ability supplied by the US) are tilted in Australia's favor.

Of course, the same is true of every other country in the world that looks to us for security.
Maybe you can see why some people are getting a little bit tired of what seems to be a never ending one way street.

Wherever there are Americans under fire you'll often find Australians there with them. We've lost many young men and women helping you fight your battles. The walls of my local RSL (equivalent of your American legion) are covered in pictures of those who didn't make it home. None of the wars were ours. Most of them were yours. But we didn't ask 'what's in it for us?' We didn't try to push for some sort of deal before we sent our men and women. Friends don't do that.

Don't get me wrong; I am not pointing my finger at Aussies as ungrateful wretches. Quite the opposite. I am well aware of their contributions in conflicts around the globe that are not of their choosing but they choose to be there to help allies. But I do get tired of peoples of other countries constantly criticizing the US for our faults while rarely, if ever, thanking us for our help, support and generosity. That song and dance gets old real fast.

The very obvious point that you are missing is that the US does a lot that prompts that criticism. But that it has always been balanced by the good that you do. But now you seem intent on undoing all that good will. You seem intent on dismantling your support. And your generosity has morphed into threats and deals.

The US used to ask itself 'What good can we do?' You didn't always get it right, but you tried. Now Trump asks 'What's in it for me?'

Now Trump asks 'What's in it for me?'
That is not what he is asking. He is asking 'How does this benefit us?" and it is a legitimate question. Uncle Sugar's wallet is getting mighty thin and he still has bills to pay and people to take care of at home. The developed countries of the world have accepted the largess of the US for long enough and need to start opening their own wallets. It is time these countries start buying/building their own bombs and bullets instead of spending it on the butter and bread side of life. And they need to convince their own people that this is needed and necessary; otherwise it most likely will never get done and they will forever be at the mercy of the next 'Putin' that appears.

Jim HOft's blog? I think not. He is not a journalist.
He reports the facts. It doesn't matter to me that you don't see that he is reporting facts as well as his analysis.

What makes you think that Hoft reports facts? (Or can even repeat one?) Plus, what does that blog post have to do with the thread?
