I hope you are aware of the fact that the consumer is THE driver of the economy.
This is true. Unfortunately, the
Consumer Confidence Index -- how consumers view the economy -- is dropping quickly and at a point that typically signals we are headed into a recession.
The more money in their pockets the better the economy tends to do. Which is why cutting waste, fraud and abuse from the federal budget is so essential.
The issue is that the cutting of waste, fraud, and abuse has, despite the claims from DOGE, been minimal. Worse, much of what they are doing may cost the US as much money (at least in the short term) as it saves. They are firing the new employees, who can be fired, but claiming it is for "performance" (when for many, they have had outstanding performance) and not following the process that US law requires to be followed when firing these employees (so courts are ordering them to be "rehired"). In some cases, it turns out that they are "mission critical" and have had to be immediately rehired.
We're seeing similar things with contracts, such as with the VA contracts that were cancelled, only to become "uncanceled" and put into a review to see which can be cancelled and not impact Veteran's services. Of course, in many cases little money is being saved as money has been paid already under the contracts and cancelling them often has a penalty -- either extra payments that must be made to cancel the contract (to protect the group contracted from losing money on the deal) or that most of the money has been paid out already, just the government will not get the full services the contract called for. And this doesn't count the mistakes -- which we've seen happen over and over when just a group of contracts are cancelled or workers are terminated -- where a contract will have to be remade for a needed service, where the old one was cancelled, with the new contract being more expensive due to inflation (and other possible reasons) since the old contract was signed.
It is imperative that we get out spending under control, pay off our debts and tax only the amount necessary to operate a functional government and leave the rest in the pocket of the taxpayer.
Which would be good but Congress is approving a budget that increases the deficit. As a general rule, Trump has shown no interest in lowering the deficit but just wants to change where the money is being spent. In his last term, Trump increased the deficits over what they were in Obama's last few years, despite the good economy where more money is coming in, and that was pre-COVID (meaning once COVID hit the deficit exploded).
I guess there are people that can argue with my position but.....oh well. I think we will all be far better off by doing this. And, as a nod to the OP, by doing so the government CAN spend more on the things the people believe important and NONE on that which political parties believe important (to get re-elected of course).
I won't argue with your position, I just don't see what you do. I see consumers fearful of the future, I seem government spending continuing to be out of control (just with different priorities) -- with the added issue that, we are also losing the world's confidence, with signs the dollar may stop being the world's reserve currency (with the issues that could cause for our economy).
