In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. I wonder how the quotas are going.

Despite rumors of a massive immigration sweep in Los Angeles, numbers don’t add up

For days, rumors that the federal government was planning a massive immigration enforcement sweep in Los Angeles County on Sunday had put officials on alert and cast a pall of fear and unease across many immigrant communities.

[To be sure, maybe it was a baseless/false rumor, but there's some objective evidence that it was real...]

Officers at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles — a lockup run by the Federal Bureau of Prisons — had been asked to prepare for an influx of up to 120 new bookings from expected immigration raids this weekend, according to two sources familiar with the situation. Typically, the downtown facility is staffed to receive new inmates only on weekdays, the officials said, and handling weekend intakes required ordering staff to come in on their days off.

The staff came in as directed, but by midafternoon immigration officials had dropped off fewer than a dozen people for processing, according to one of the sources.

--

Neighbors [in Alhambra] said it was shortly after dawn that two blacked-out sedans pulled up around the low slung two-story apartment complex.

Behind the residence’s door was Felipe Espinoza, a 56-year-old Los Angeles traffic officer, who was doing planks and getting ready for work when FBI agents shouted, “Open the door.”

They repeatedly asked for his father-in-law, whose car was registered to the address.

Espinoza said he finally went outside to talk with them, [the fam refused entrance without a warrant] and they produced a three-page document that they said was a warrant. But they showed him only the first page.

“They were a little hesitant about showing me the warrant, per se, but what I saw they didn’t have a seal on it or anything,” he said.

I wonder how the quotas are going.

Despite promises of mass deportations, the number of immigrants removed from the country since January 20 was not mentioned by either the press release or White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller at a briefing.

The Reuters news agency later reported that 37,660 migrants had been deported in Trump's first month, putting the new administration behind Biden's monthly average of 57,000.

[there are some reasons behind this, like the shift from border removals (quick and easy) to trying to find illegals inside wherever they might be inside the country (hard), but this is the sort of subtlety that only the so-called experts will care about.]

Russian national charged with biting ICE officer who arrested him

A Russian national has been charged with felony assault after allegedly biting and injuring an immigration officer who had detained and arrested him Tuesday in downtown Los Angeles.

As the officers escorted Zaitsev to a processing area, he allegedly struggled and bit I.R.’s left pinky finger, breaking skin, drawing blood and fracturing a bone.

Support Surges For Haddon Twp. Restaurant Owners Detained By ICE

The husband and wife own and operate Jersey Kebab. Their green card applications are still pending after 9 years, according to their family. [ok, the fam is not unbiased]

Federal Marshals and officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took the husband and wife into custody at the restaurant, according to family members.

Celal and Emini pay taxes and have a valid business license, the GoFundMe says. They also don't have criminal records or prior orders of removal by an immigration judge, according to the fundraiser.

Jersey Kebab will be closed until further notice, the restaurant announced Tuesday.

Muhammed Emanet told CBS Philadelphia that he is remaining positive.
"Being the type of people we are as Muslims we are taught that no matter how much someone have wronged you, you have to kill them with kindness almost," he told the news outlet. "You have to forgive them and let it go."

NPR said so: "President Donald Trump signed a memorandum that instructs the Pentagon and HHS to prepare 30,000 beds at Guantanamo to house criminal migrants."

What? I showed you the actual memo. It doesn't mention beds. Obviously. Because it's not just beds they'd need. They need a high security jail.

It's not going to happen. You are being lied to.
From here: Trump administration rethinking Guantánamo immigrant detention plan amid cost issues and power struggles

'President Donald Trump’s plan to use the U.S. naval base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, to detain 30,000 immigrants has been hitting major legal, logistical and financial hurdles ever since he surprised many in his own administration by announcing it. Now, as agencies spar over responsibility for operations there and over blame for what has gone wrong, there is a growing recognition within the administration that it was a political decision that is just not working.'

Like I said, you are being lied to.

The store owner told Nexstar’s WPIX that a U.S. military veteran was among the people detained.

“... looked to me was because he was Hispanic. He is Puerto Rican and the manager of our warehouse. It looked to me like they were specifically going after certain kinds of people — not every kind, because they did not ask me for documentation for my American workers, Portuguese workers, or white workers,” Janota said.

Machado said he was driving to work Wednesday with two other men when he was stopped by ICE agents on Lomond Drive in Manassas, a short distance from his home. He said he was confused by what was happening, why agents surrounded the pickup truck.

“And they just got out of the car with the guns in their hands and say, turn off the car, give me the keys, open the window, you know,” Machado told Telemundo 44’s Rosbelis Quinoñez, who first reported his story. “Everything was really fast.”

He said the agents said the name of a man they were seeking for a deportation order, someone who had given Machado’s home address. Machado told them that wasn’t his name — he didn’t know anyone by that name — and offered to show them his real ID compliant Virginia driver’s license.

“They didn’t ask me for any ID,” Machado said. “I was telling the officer, if I can give him ID, but he said just keep my hands up, not moving. After that, he told me to get out of the car and put the handcuffs on me. And then he went to me and said how did I get into this country and if I was waiting for a court date or if I have any case. And I told him I was an American citizen, and he looked at his other partner like, you know, smiling, like saying, can you believe this guy? Because he asked the other guy, ‘Do you believe him?’”

“I voted for Trump last election, but, because I thought it was going to be the things, you know, like, … just go against criminals, not every Hispanic looking, like, that they will assume that we are all illegals.”

The Trump administration’s efforts to cull extraneous workers has led to the departure of 43 immigration judges, as well as 85 essential administrative staff.

For scale, the U.S. employs roughly 735 immigration judges in the country’s 71 immigration courts, charged with handling a backlog of 3.7 million cases—and the number increases every day.

“How do you deport people without immigration judges?” Biggs said. “It’s highly hypocritical. It runs contrary to what he campaigned on. He’s making it more difficult to deport people from this country. It makes no sense at all.”

Cutting roughly six percent of the U.S. stock of judges certainly won’t prevent the Trump administration’s efforts to enact massive deportations; it will likely just make them even more slow

Acting ICE director removed from his post due to frustration over pace of arrests, sources say

Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Caleb Vitello is being removed from his role at the agency amid frustration over a slowdown in arrests in the interior of the US, according to multiple sources.
Apparently he has been quasi-acting director for the past two weeks in the well-oiled machine that is Trump 2.0, but now a replacement has been found.

New acting ICE director named two weeks after predecessor ousted

Todd Lyons, ICE’s acting director for enforcement and removal operations, will now serve as the agency’s acting director, succeeding Caleb Vitello, who Noem demoted in February. Madison Sheahan, who serves as secretary of Louisiana’s Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, [and previously aided Secretary Noem in South Dakota] will become ICE’s acting deputy director. [Maybe she's an expert at invasive species?]

Vitello, a veteran ICE official, was removed as acting director one month into his tenure following complaints from White House officials over lagging immigrant arrest numbers.

[ICE has quotas]

Analysts, meanwhile, say there is little evidence that ICE has increased its numbers dramatically — ICE would have to arrest more than 2,700 people a day to reach 1 million a year, which the agency has never done.

--

ICE has slowed its reporting of data in an act of greater transparency, but what we have shows that, apart from a one week spurt of arrests, arrests have settled back down to Biden levels per day. Removals/deportations are down compared to Biden.

ICE arrests over 32,000 migrants in US illegally in 1st 50 days

So that's 640 per day.

Falling short of Biden's average over the last couple years, but of course Trump has multiple federal agencies helping ICE out on this, so the costs and opportunity costs are no doubt much higher.

“I voted for Trump last election, but, because I thought it was going to be the things, you know, like, … just go against criminals, not every Hispanic looking, like, that they will assume that we are all illegals.”

Sen. Warner seeks answers on why ICE detained a US citizen in Manassas

Jensy Machado, who says he voted for President Donald Trump, told Telemundo 44 that on March 5, ICE agents blocked in his pickup truck not far from his Manassas home as he headed to work with two other men. He said the agents initially refused to let him show his REAL ID-compliant Virginia driver’s license, proof of his lawful status in the U.S.

“They didn’t ask me for any ID,” he said. “I was telling the officer if I can give an ID, but he said to just keep my hands up and not moving.

Warner’s letter to federal officials says, “U.S. citizens interacting with ICE who seek to prove their identity with identification or other documents that would assist ICE in determining their identity and immigration status should be permitted to do so.

“In this case, it is clear that the ICE agents misidentified this U.S. citizen, wasting valuable time and resources, and damaging ICE’s public image in the process.”

So let's see, under Democrats ICE dosen't do enough and damages their public image. Under Republicans ICE does too much and damages their public image.

Tough luck ICE.

Just a week into President Donald Trump’s second term, Rep. Adriano Espaillat began to see reports of Puerto Ricans and others being questioned and arrested by immigration agents. [e.g. OP]

So Espaillat, a New York Democrat, did what members of Congress often do: He wrote to the administration and demanded answers. That was more than 10 weeks ago. Espaillat has not received a response.

His experience appears to be common.

At least a dozen members of Congress, all Democrats, have written to the Trump administration with pointed questions about constituents and other citizens whom immigration agents have questioned, detained and even held at gunpoint.

None has received an answer.
