  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't care if they were hassled. If you are among a group of criminals, I suspect you would be hassled. I would expect it for myself under such circumstances. At least until they sorted things out.

With such advice, I suppose I should avoid construction sites, speaking with our HOA landscapers in Spanish and avoiding a people whom you deem "criminal."

There's one problem though. I speak Spanish all the time with my Latina wife.

Everyone they take into custody is a criminal
Deportation is not a criminal proceeding, but even if we skip that, you spoke of "Mostly more serious criminals for now."

That just isn't the case.

Is Telemundo a good, unbiased source?
Here's another: MSN

'According to Ahasteen, one tribal member was involved in a raid in Phoenix. Ahasteen told CNN the incident was a “wrong place, wrong time” situation and the tribal member, who presented their tribal identification and was questioned while in custody, was not the intended target.

Now that ICE have been given quotas, you are going to see more and more examples.

They said they were going after the worst first but if there were illegal immigrants present they would be taken into custody too

They'd take them as well. So they've gone after the real bad guys and there just happened to be others hanging around when they got there. Which hasn't been the case at all. Here's an example of when ICE was just looking for undocumented workers in a business: Multiple legal migrants detained by ICE amid Trump blitz

Ras J. Baraka, the Democratic mayor of Newark, said ICE raided a local business and detained "undocumented residents as well as citizens, without producing a warrant."

He added that a U.S. military veteran was among the people detained and that he "suffered the indignity of having the legitimacy of his military documentation questioned."

As Trump said: US President Trump to transfer undocumented immigrants to Guantanamo

“We have 30,000 beds in Guantanamo to detain the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people,” said Trump. “Some of them are so bad we don’t even trust the countries to hold them, because we don’t want them coming back, so we’re going to send them out to Guantanamo.”

So if you say that they are literally going after the worst and Trump says they don't want to risk sending them back to where they came from then where are they being sent? We both know that he's lying about Guantanamo Bay. It hasn't even got 30,000 beds and it would cost a monstrous amount to build 30,000 holding cells there and an even bigger amount to staff it and service it.

You know this is all bulldust. When are people who realise this going to admit it? They can't keep living a lie.

There weren't any worst in the OP.

Prioritizing criminals was the Deporter in Chief's MO. Scattershot detention of citizens and non-citizens is the Trump MO.

Trump previously signed a memorandum that ordering HHS and the Pentagon to prepare 30,000 beds. That was on January 30th.

Well, that's cosy. Water mattresses perhaps? Maybe some nice queen size ones with matching bed side tables. A reading light and aircon to be sure. Do you think carpets or just a couple of throw rugs? I'd go the latter. I've been to Cuba and boy, it gets mucho calor.

Actually, the memo said no such thing about 30,000 beds. Whoever told you that was lying. Expanding Migrant Operations Center at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to Full Capacity – The White House

Apart from some legalise at the end, this is all it said:

'I hereby direct the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security to take all appropriate actions to expand the Migrant Operations Center at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to full capacity to provide additional detention space for high-priority criminal aliens unlawfully present in the United States, and to address attendant immigration enforcement needs identified by the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security.

This memorandum is issued in order to halt the border invasion, dismantle criminal cartels, and restore national sovereignty.'

But note the reference to 'high-priority criminal aliens'. These are the really bad dudes that Trump wants held there. Maximum security required, I'd say. Not just beds. Who knows what that would cost! Oh, hang on. I just checked.

Seems that they're building a super sized one in Alabama. Although 'super sized' means only 4,000 bad dudes can be incarcerated. So you do the maths for 30,000. And road access for building materials and constructor access will be pretty easy in ol' Alabamy, so add whatever percentage you think will be applicable for building in a bay in the middle of nowhere in a country that really doesn't like you guys to which you are going to have to ship every cubic metre of concrete, every 4x2, every nail and every length of reo after you've delivered it to...wherever it's got be shipped from.

Ah yeah. The price? A nice round one billion dollars.
'The Alabama Corrections Institution Finance Authority has approved a final price of US$1.08 billion for the prison, currently under construction in Elmore County.'

From here: Trump Wants to Detain 30,000 Migrants at Guantanamo Bay. It Can Hold Only 130 Now.

In a pre-recorded video uploaded to social media Thursday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had little more to add beyond noting that the Pentagon was "leaning forward on supporting the president's directive."

"We're working that in real time," he added.'

Which sounds very much to me like 'We're making this stuff up as we go...

I don't listen to public radio a lot, but my sister mentioned they had a story different from what I told her. It turns out they had spread one of the false statements made by Senator John McCain. I contacted them with no response. We have a state news council that handles such situations and is staffed by volunteers, so I made a complaint to them. They put us together and the reporter was kind of sheepish but quickly agreed to do a retraction. Unfortunately there is no such setup nationally, and very often I get no response.

McCain’s been dead since 8/18, you say you don’t listen to public radio much, but the one time you did, you heard and untruth and complained about it but the National show doesn’t respond “very often”…how many complaints have you lodged?

(On topic): 30,000!? We might need to invade the mainland of Cuba to get these numbers done!?
But since we’re being heavy-handed with the rest of the Hemisphere why should Cuba get a break?

I have no idea what point it is you are making. From the link that you gave:

'STEVE VLADECK: The logistical and just practical hurdles that the government would face if they tried to do this on anything other than a purely superficial, sensational scale, I think, are really ultimately going to be daunting.

PFEIFFER: But as we heard the defense secretary say a few minutes ago, the Trump administration says all systems are go.'

This is what Trump has told you he is going to do. As I said, and is confirmed above, the cost would be astronomical.

It is just not feasible in any way. He is lying to you. I really struggle to understand how anyone could think otherwise.

And McCain? What?

What? I showed you the actual memo. It doesn't mention beds. Obviously. Because it's not just beds they'd need. They need a high security jail.

It's not going to happen. You are being lied to.

Just repeating that changes absolutely none of the facts that you have been given. You can't use them as an excuse for believing the lies.

This is going to happen a lot. How long before the courts are full of wrongful arrest cases? I was going to say that you're probably OK if you're as white as Trump. But actually...that comparison doesn't really work.

Detaining someone for questioning (asking questions of everyone present helps determine the truth of any situation) is not "arresting" anyone - you have to charge someone with a specific crime to arrest them. However police can detain people for up to 48 hours in order to get information from them

It's inconvenience at worst for a citizen who is working at a plant that hires illegal workers. A few hours out of ones day. When you work for companies who break the law you can get caught up in their nonsense, and find yourself being detained for questions.

Trump ordered HHS and the Pentagon to restore the Gitmo detention center to full capacity. If and when that is complete, there will be "30,000 beds" (i.e. "space for 30,000 prisoners/detainees") available, but that is not something that's going to happen in 5 days, or even five months, if reports about the current condition of the facility are accurate. Trump did not order HHS and the Pentagon to just set up 30,000 literal beds at Guantanamo Bay. If he thinks that's what he ordered, he should clarify.
