The US economy is expected to have contracted in the first quarter of the year:

and from the AP, consumer confidence is falling:

That doesn't really surprise me. I notice less traffic on the roads in Orlando. My parents commented that when they went to the local IKEA, it was nearly empty. Usually it's full of tourists.

High unemployment rate usually/always precedes a recession/depression.

Since DOGE laid off lots of people.....

Yeah, economy is complicated. Having fewer workers to do the same job may seem "efficient", but having less people who are able to spend money also means you are less likely to generate income from the market.

People who are crazy on efficiency probably don't make good capitalists and in fact may be horrifically bad at it.

A good capitalist knows the simple fact, "give more to get more". "Whatever you sow, you will reap". It's better for the economy to hire thousands of low-skill workers than few highly skilled workers.

If you can't tolerate low-skill workers, then you need to find a way to pay them salaries even if they don't work.

It may sound horrifically wasteful but that's just how the economy works. People who don't even know this basic concept should not even be tinkering with national economy.

I think this is all supposed to be a firesale. Trump was never intended to be a competent president. He was picked precisely because everything he touches he corrupts and destroys. The real oligarchs funding MAGA know it's all kayfabe, all grift, all theatrics and circus for the gullible masses, and they intend to swoop in and buy up the wreckage. The slumping consumer confidence and contracting GDP may be a feature, not an bug. It's like placing a short on the US economy, then doing everything you can to devalue it. It is "3D chess", but the people being played are ordinary Americans.

And before anyone really starts complaining about 'Trump Economy' it takes a little more time than 6 weeks before a newly inaugurated president can 'own' an economy as his.

That's absolutely true. I don't think anyone was blaming Biden for economic woes after six weeks in office. It takes time to work things out.

Yup, that's why I voted for him. I wanted him to destroy everything just so Democrats will win everything for the next 8 years after he's gone. Maybe longer because they will fix everything. The secrets out. All of us who voted for Trump are actually Democrats.

I think i quoted your words in my response.

You only heard what you wanted to hear.

MAGA has been duped. They voted for a man who is being manipulated by a group of people whose interests are objectively far from the sort of "God and country" interests that they believe in. Musk is a foreign-born atheist who arrived here as an illegal immigrant, whose grandfather was a literal Nazi. His father was raised in South Africa because it was a Nazi haven after WWII. Musk believes in replacing all our jobs with robots and is also influenced by a "philosopher" (Curtis Yarvin) that thinks the masses of humanity should either be exterminated, or plugged into virtual realities like the Matrix. Musk is also a terrible father and husband with a profane, reductionist view of marriage and children (he's basically just a sperm donor and views his wives as incubators).

And this is the actual America Musk is trying to build. A dystopian hellscape where women are reduced to breeding stock, poor people are either dead or disenfranchised, and only rich people like him have lives worth living.

Whew, that was quite a rant.

What group? Unless you subscribe to the theory of a 'shadow government' that really calls the shots.
Musk is a foreign-born atheist
Are you recommending religious tests then?
whose grandfather was a literal Nazi.
Are you suggesting that Nazism is an inherited disease?
His father was raised in South Africa because it was a Nazi haven after WWII.
Are you sure it is not because he was BORN in Pretoria So. Africa?

Curtis Yarvin (Curtis Yarvin - Wikipedia) sounds like a first class nut job but but then again many liberals and progressive leftists have a high regard for Karl Marx.
Just kinda curious but where did you get all your info on Musk and et.al? Would like to have a read on that.

Elon was always graceless, crazy, and a liar. People have been saying this for almost a decade, of course, but it's started to trickle into the mainstream now that his profile has been elevated.
Maybe, according to some, he (allegedly) lacks social skills?

His alleged adult autism doesn't excuse his bad behavior. Musk is beyond just being awkward. He's arrogant and has misrepresented himself for decades. I suppose the worst part is how the media enabled him by refusing to challenge the facade he presented to the world, that of being a genius inventor (he is neither), when in reality he's simply a rich kid playing with his father's money (and it didn't hurt that he bullied most of his business partners).

Ok! I cannot say I’m too informed on Musk, so I will not comment.

Thanks for the info!

I think one of the more hilarious parts was him claiming to be a top player in Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 in the world, and then doing a stream of him playing and everyone who has played a little immediately seeing that he has no idea what he's doing. As if his Elden Ring build didn't already give that away.

The worst part, he didn't have to lie about his lack of skills at all. A man that is as wealthy as he is, as busy as he is, doesn't really need video games. He just wanted to ingratiate himself to an increasingly powerful demographic (in preparation for his political move, most likely).

I actually am a gamer myself, and it's not hard to guess why Musk wanted to appeal cool to that crowd. Increasingly its a space where culture warriors try to fish and red-pill young men into the alt-right pipeline.

well in this case alot of this is trumps doing, all these tarrifs are going to cost americans a ton of money and reduce purchasing power, onto of the boycotts by Canadians who want nothing to do with the states thanks to his provoking. You have things like car manufacturing that rely on Canada and states that rely on Canadian tourism and purchasing.

Please don't start with the Trump recession, this recession has been in the making for a while now. The effects of what's happening to countries on your side of the world will eventually come here. I will add tariffs that will compound this issue.

I remember the mantra about debt from Republican campaigners, it made common sense. Finally, after 17 years, we are reducing some spending. My tribal delusion popped when I heard a couple of years ago that we went to Iraq over the petrol dollar. We are still paying for it. Democrats were somewhat correct when they said we were doing it for oil.
except that this is of trumps own making and we can squarly point to where he is to be blamed. Or do you think threatening war with a soverign country starting world wide trade wars, and [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]ing off people you rely on buying and selling yu stuff won't effect the economy?
