  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm all for cutting spending. I just want it to be rational and well thought out, not performed off the cuff by an unelected and unaccountable man with an ideological axe to grind. Most certainly do not want it done as a unconstitutional power grab by the executive branch.
What I don't like is Trump's implementation of policy seems sledgehammer when he should be using a scalpel. I hope something doesn't break.

The other issue I have is, should they make some good and rational cuts, will it stick given the methodology? I'm certain there are areas we can make some good cuts but if it is caught up with everything else being chopped en mass there is a great risk it will simply be restored again.

Million Dollar question.

I do believe this because some threads are talking about some people harmed due to his policy but if he is blind to it they'll leave in mass four years from now. Money over Ideology.

The Congressional Budget Office recently found that Congress provided $516 billion in appropriations this fiscal year to programs that had expired under federal law.

Think about that fact, my friends. The federal budget deficit for fiscal year 2023 was $1.7 trillion, which was 6.3% of the gross domestic product (GDP). This was an increase of $320 billion from the previous fiscal year.

We went through this already.

A recent report by the Congressional Budget Office found more than 1,200 programs at more than $516 billion a year. When an authorization expires, Congress can extend the program through new legislation or by providing new appropriations, according to CBO.

And as far as recently and recent, these findings were issued under the Biden Administration. This is not a 'DOGE finding'.

Therefore, Congress has wasted $516 billion dollars this fiscal year.
That does not follow. Congress felt things like veterans health was not a waste and appropriated funds for it.

When $516 billion dollars are being spent on expired government programs, what is a better word to describe that, if you think "waste" is the wrong word?

Some programs are temporary, if they’re deemed to be worthy of another two years of existence, the programs is listed in the appropriate appropriations bill, (or as an amendment on a totally unrelated bill).

Also, since there hasn’t been a budget passed in several years and we’re operated on CRs and endless omnibus bills, some “leakage” should be expected.

This doesn't fit into one word, but it describes the situation.

"Congress can extend the program through new legislation or by providing new appropriations"

If Congress chooses to fund it, it is not expired.

If Congress passed a spending bill that was approved through the end of 2024 - then it ended in 2024 - because they are incompetent, they continued to send our money.

AI: The Veterans' Health Care Eligibility Reform Act of 1996 (P.L. 104-262) authorization expired in 1998

Maybe DOGE can claw back a couple decades' worth of money from the veterans.

DOGE announces more than $1B in savings after canceling 104 federal DEI contracts

The new federal Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced Friday that taxpayers will see just over a $1 billion savings through the elimination of 104 diversity, equity and inclusion-related (DEI) contracts.

As of Wednesday, DOGE had recorded the cancellation of 85 "DEIA" contracts from 25 federal agencies. By Friday afternoon, that number had grown to 104 contracts totaling $1,000,060,792, according to a DOGE news release.

Of note, 21 Department of the Treasury contracts were canceled, saving a total of $25,247,783. In second place was the Department of Health & Human Services, which canceled 15 contracts worth $28,187,448.

Or - stop the insanity of paying 27 years on an authorization that expired last century.

Don't you support our troops? Want veterans to have better access to healthcare?
oh puleese.... (dramatic emphasis) President Trump was head and shoulders over Obama and now head and shoulder over Joe Biden in the care and concern for our troops.
If they can do that every day for the next 4,500 days, they'll pay for the extension of the Trump tax cuts.
Except that has been debunked by - gasp! the IRS when the last Trump tax cuts generated more revenue than the years before - it's not one of those things, where if you say it enough times - tada! it suddenly becomes true!

From what I understand from the young Musk minions, the idea is to break it all then fix what matters.

“DOGE: Looks like Radical Left Reuters was paid $9,000,000 by the Department of Defense to study “large scale social deception.” GIVE BACK THE MONEY, NOW!” President Trump posted on Truth Social Thursday after it was revealed Reuters was paid big bucks to engage in social engineering.

“Reuters was paid millions of dollars by the US government for “large scale social deception.” That is literally what it says on the purchase order!” Elon Musk stated on X.

“They’re a total scam. Just wow.”
