Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon and television personality, ran unsuccessfully for Senate in 2022 in Pennsylvania with Trump’s backing. He lost to Democratic now-Sen. John Fetterman.

Oz, who is an advocate of alternative medicines and treatments, has been skewered by the medical community for years Early on in the pandemic, for instance, Oz talked up the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine as a way to treat the coronavirus — despite the lack of firm scientific evidence that it was an effective treatment.

Before he ran for Senate, Oz voiced support for Obamacare ... though his then-campaign spokesperson [said] Oz would not have voted for the landmark health reform law.

I was not a big Dr. Oz watcher, but i remember in 2016 when he helped Trump conceal his health records, saying he had seen his records and that should be good enough for the rest of us.
I wondered why he was doing it. So unprofessional. I went from not knowing much about him to believing he was not trustworthy.
Whenever any candidate goes to great lengths to hide information, my immediate reaction is to assume it's very bad--especially when the physical evidence is weightier than reported.

Dr Oz is a doctor, specifically a cardiothorasic surgeon.

That's good.

But he's also a know pusher of medical disinformation, medical 'woo' and products that make highly dubious medical claims.

That's bad.

For instance, he has been publicly called out by the FDA for "irresponsible and misleading" claims about levels of arsenic in apple juice. ''
He has made repeated false claims about GMOs and the FDA's testing program for them.
He has pushed multiple foods/substances as having benefits for weight management, despite dubious (at best) evidence at the time. These include green coffee extract, raspberry ketone, goji berry, red palm oil and Garcinia cambogia, none of which were shown to have any significant metabolic impacts.

He's also made some very dubious statements about vaccines - including vaccine schedules, links between vaccines and autism and repeatedly having anti-vaxxers (like RFK Jr) on his show.


There has to be some sensible, science-based public health specalists in the MAGA sphere. But its plain that this administration doesn't want them - it's a cavalcade of misfits and weirdos who's primary characteristics are loyalty and fealty.

Besides the fact that the man is a pseudoscience-pushing quack, this is yet another example of somebody with no high-level administrative or policy experience being asked to run one of the more complex agencies in the federal government.
