  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Walz’s claim that he was in Hong Kong during Tiananmen Square protests undercut by unearthed newspaper reports

Im not surprised. He chaperoned trips of high school students and teachers, right? Field trips start to blend in all together
Yeah, because whether it’s 30 or 15, they are close to the same.

Yes, that's true. However, the evidence would suggest that the reason that he can't prove he was there is because he probably wasn't.
And you think he gains some SERIOUS ...what by perpetuating this lie?

I couldn't tell you how many field trips I've been on.
These aren’t field trips to local museums. What you all do to defend Walz and Harris is borderline embarrassing.

A big deal lie is something like illegal Haitians (actually refugees) killing and eating people's pets.
Reporting what constituents have said is a lot different than fabricating a story.

That lie was just discovered. It sounds like such a lie was told to make himself look like a big shot. A lot like Joe Biden on his academic record. Don't assume it is just one lie.

I can't tell you the exact number of business trips I've taken, but I'll bet my estimate isn't double (or more) than the actual number.

It's politically expedient for one to make such exaggerated claims. As to specifically why people tell tall tales? It's usually to make themselves look better than reality. Walz has a penchant for making these exaggerated claims. But I know few people on the left care whether he's being truthful or not, because Trump lies way more than Walz, which apparently (in their eyes) excuses any lie Walz may have told or will tell in perpetuity.

I think it's important to have a sense of perspective. Could any of us stand up to this kind of scrutiny?
When fact finders have to go back 35 years to find a candidate visited China a month later than he'd said, it shows me how honest he must be. If he were a habitual liar, there would be hundreds of things they could uncover without hiring teams of researchers.

This is an incredibly flimsy cop-out.

Walz didn't merely misspeak. He said he was someplace a historic event took place that he'd "never forget". This isn't just, whoops, I forgot which month I made my trip. He gave a specific date that he'd "never forget" multiple times. He was adamant he was there and witnessed something that he very likely did not.

I know you want to downplay this. Heck, I know you wouldn't even care if he blatantly lied. You've already told us in another thread that you want your husband to be more like Walz. But for objective people without tribal loyalty, making up stories isn't good no matter which side does it.

The protests and repression in the weeks before and after Tiannamin Square were ongoing. The potential danger to travelers existed. It was courageous of Walz and his students to go to China in a time of turmoil, and it made his job chaperoning teens more difficult. But obviously he thought there were powerful lessons to learn about history.

As in Congress and in leading the bipartisan Governors' Association, Walz doesn't retreat in hard times. He knew we would be dealing with China for decades to come.

I appreciate your attempt to put lipstick on a pig, but the bottom line is even Walz has now admitted that his claims were an exaggeration and misrepresentation.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), the vice presidential running mate to Vice President Harris, wasn’t in Hong Kong when protests erupted in China’s Tiananmen Square in 1989, despite his previous claims.
That’s been established and, without fully explaining why he lied and said he arrived overseas months earlier than he really did in 1989, he said during Tuesday’s vice presidential debate that he’s “a knucklehead at times.”
“I will get caught up in the rhetoric. But being there, the impact it made, the difference it made in my life. I learned a lot about China,” he said.

Newly unearthed reports contradict previous claims made by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz about his travel to China, including a claim that the Democratic vice presidential nominee was in Hong Kong for a teaching position in 1989 during the Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protests that ended in hundreds of protesters killed by the Chinese government.

Well there’s a shocker.
You can't believe anything coming out of CNN.

I used CNN because that’s the response I would have gotten if I used Fox or Daily Wire. ;)
