As I said, it depends on how they are taught. How to read the Bible comes later but for a novice who first reads the Bible he/she would begin with Genesis. I know I did when I first read the Bible.
When I was a teenager I wanted to read the Bible all the way through, so, naturally, started at the beginning. But I had been to Sunday school and Bible studies; I knew the Gospel, the nativity and Easter stories and something about Paul. I had a working knowledge of the NT and had decided to try to read the OT.
But even after reading Genesis, I did not come away thinking, "the earth is flat, all my school science lessons are wrong." Neither did I stop reading the Bible because I was "confused".
