You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.And yet it is possible to make shipwreck of our faith, to turn away and become apostate.
If apostasy is impossible then warning against it is meaningless. St. John reminds us that there is mortal sin. When sin drives us from Christ, when we refuse to approach the throne of grace and confess our sins and humbly repent we are quenching the Holy Spirit and we are risking shipwrecking our faith.
The Scriptures tell us to abide in Christ.

God keeps those He is saving. The Spirit guides us to sorrowfully confess our sins.
Ezekiel 36:26
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.
