  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The times demand serious economic ideas. Harris supplies gimmicks.

Vice President Kamala Harris’s speech Friday was an opportunity to get specific with voters about how a Harris presidency would manage an economy that many feel is not working well for them. Unfortunately, instead of delivering a substantial plan, she squandered the moment on populist gimmicks.

The irony.

Trump the other day put out twenty promises that included the gem:

  • End inflation, and make America affordable again.
Perhaps we should be talking about specifics from the other candidate as well?

OP’s point is a fair critique from the left. From the right, it’s laughably hypocritical when their policies have been nothing but gimmicks for 30+ years.

That's the point. If the lack of policy nuance was a valid critique of Harris how would It get me to vote for Trump?

Shure he says a lot of stuff, but almost all of it is meaningless and none of it is detailed.

Perhaps you should start a thread on that instead of derailing this one.

You can't derail a discussion about one presidential candidate with a direct comparison to their opponent.

It's literally why we are talking about this.

Actually you can. The thread is about WaPo’s comments on the Harris plan.

I guess even WaPo is getting tired of the fake hype.

At some point when the twerking fades, and you can no longer fake a southern accent....character, fortitude, and ability matter.

As long as we're doing comparisons...

That's Trump in 2020 predicting the economic disaster that awaits under Biden....7-9$ gasoline.

I believe this was 2022 in CA

Then at the end, he said they'll tell you to get rid of your car.

Not 100% perfect but when it comes to identifying macroeconomic trends under Biden...Trump can basically see into the future.

I can't find footage of Harris speaking on economics in a way that isn't just the same talking points she was handed....and I don't think she actually knows what they mean. However, she did slam dunk the answer on this question....

And some people laughed at her for it. I think that's unfair. The request was to explain it in layman's terms. She laymansplained it so well that even a layman has a solid grasp of exactly what happened. My dog could understand that explanation. Slam dunk.

...that's the 2nd WaPo editorial the op has posted in as many days. It's step up from the NY Post or the Washingtong Times.

Do you have an opinion about any of the points made in the editorial. Maybe I missed it, but I don't believe you have.
I agree that her proposals were gimmicky.

That's Trump in 2020 predicting the economic disaster that awaits under Biden....7-9$ gasoline.
Economists were predicting that in 2019 after the pandemic took hold. Not that Trump is entirely to blame for it, but if he had done a better job as president and exercised effective leadership, it wouldn't have gotten that bad.

There's a limit to how much anyone could have affected the supply chain, Biden did what was probably the best thing:

The US made $4 billion selling oil this year on President Biden's unprecedented releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve

  • The US government has pocketed almost $4 billion from selling oil this year, the Wall Street Journal reported.
  • In a bid to lower gas prices, President Joe Biden authorized releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in March.
  • Since then, the US has sold 180 million barrels of crude at an average price of $96.25 a barrel.
A senior administration official told the Journal that the Energy Department has the latitude to wait for lower market prices before it begins buying up oil to refill the SPR, and said that the process could take years.

Oil companies and OPEC were not pleased. But comsumers were. And now, the reserves are being filled with much cheaper oil, and the U.S. pockets the profit.

How effective was it?
Compared to July 2019, gas prices have increased between 10-15% after adjusting for inflation across US regions.
