  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Tim Walz’s 2006 campaign falsely described details about his arrest for drunk driving in 1995

But in 2006, his campaign repeatedly told the press that he had not been drinking that night, claiming that his failed field sobriety test was due to a misunderstanding related to hearing loss from his time in the National Guard. The campaign also claimed that Walz was allowed to drive himself to jail that night.

None of that was true.
Ooh, if only there were bodycams back then in 2006. I like watching police videos, and it would have been funny to see a politician doing a field sobriety test. :)

From OP's CNN article: "Walz was then transported by a state trooper to a local hospital for a blood test, showing he had a blood alcohol level of 0.128, well above the state’s legal limit of 0.1 at the time."

He admitted his mistake, used it as an example to his students, went as far as resigning his coach's position and offered to resign his teacher's job. He has since given up alcohol.

I think that most people would think the whole episode relected well on him.

Amen to that. Not everyone can admit their own mistakes, so we must forgive Walz of his actions from almost 20 years ago.

A verse comes to mind about forgiving others. :)

Ephesians 4:31-32 (NIV): "Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."

Good grief, no. We accept that he made a mistake. And then we see how that panned out. Did he accept that he'd made a mistake? Did he learn from it and change his ways? Did he become a better person learning from that experience? Did he encourage others not to make the same mistake?

Well, I'm ticking all those boxes. And I don't know about you, but if those boxes are ticked then I don't hold a past mistake against him or others in the same situation. And I consider him to be a better person for it.

Maybe you don't do the same. And that's up to you. But it seems kind of a backward world where some people learn from their mistakes and never repeat them - yet those mistakes are dragged up from the past as a means to discredit that person, yet some amongst us who do something wrong, never admit that they are wrong and keep making the same mistakes - they get a free pass.

Maybe if you have the time you can explain why you think that happens.

"His campaign manager told the Post-Bulletin of Rochester that he was not drunk. She said Walz couldn't understand what the trooper was saying to him because he had a hearing loss from his service in an artillery unit in the National Guard, and suggested that he might have had balance issues as a result. She also falsely claimed that the judge who dismissed the drunken driving charge chastised the officer for not realizing that Walz was deaf.
His campaign spokeswoman made similar statements to KEYC-TV and The Journal of New Ulm, saying, "The DUI charge was dropped for a reason: It wasn’t true.” She claimed he failed the field sobriety test because of his deafness, and that the trooper let Walz drive to a police station and leave on his own."

This is about truth and honesty. We have a new legislator who in her first term plead guilty to drunk driving. She said she was sorry, she'll probably get re-elected. Her campaign never tried to cover it up. He won his first race for the United States Congress under false pretenses.. His campaign did not correct the false information and later he was elected governor. Now he wants to be vice-president. Walz needs to answer as to why he let the false information put out by his campaign stand for so long. Why didn't he correct it?

Do you have a comment to make? Wasting your time randomly posting links to some article is also wasting my time.
A made a comment about truth and honesty. The quoted material from the article provided the relevant facts::

Luckily you quoted the article so I didn't have to read it myself and discover that I already knew the facts. And had commented on them.

It seems you aren’t aware of 2006. Maybe read the article.

It looks like the issue is not about him owning up to it. It’s about his campaign trying to whitewash it. Even if his ear issue caused him to fail a field sobriety test, that doesn’t account for the BAC.

This was true. In 2006. He has since spoken openly about the incident and admits to being drunk at the time.

Did he speak openly about covering up?!
No idea. Is that the standard now? That politicians need to publically announce previous lies? If so, campaigns will become nothing but apologies.

Look, I agree 100% that he was in the wrong when he (his campaign technically but there is no way he didn't approve it) lied about his DUI. But that was also almost 20 years ago and the thing he had lied about he has acknowledged and now talks candidly about. So I'm not sure why this is such a big deal to some.
