  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Kamala to fix food prices. Yay!

Sadly many will fall for this media hype and gaslighting. Kamala is deceiving the American public and is in no way qualified to be President.
I agree. I think food prices will soar if she becomes President.

She wants to promote more competition among meat producers and more scrutiny over mergers of large food companies. Some states already have bans on price gouging, so her proposal is to simply extend that as a federal regulation. None of this sounds like "Soviet-Style" anything. It's capitalism at its best.

Worse than that, it's an attempt at re-establishing free market capitalism. something entirely toxic to the right.

I wonder why she doesn’t do it now? I’m sure Biden would be for it. And if it’s so great, it would certainly help her campaign.

Should such a thing come to pass I wonder, as an amateur historian, how this will compare to Diocletian's Edictum de Pretiis Rerum Venalium of AD 301. Here this a link to the Wikipedia page on the edict for those interested. The third part of the edict set maximum prices for well over 1,000 products, including food items. Of course the price for one pound purple silk was set at 150,000 denarii, which, interesting enough, was the same price set for a lion. (I wonder what kind of financing one could get for purchasing a lion?)

I do admit our modern economy is, perhaps, ever so slightly, more advanced than early 4th century AD Rome.

Here's a press release from March.

President Biden Is Taking Action to Lower Costs for Families and Fight Corporate Rip-Offs

President Biden is fighting to lower costs for American consumers—and he is taking action to address corporate price gouging. Congressional Republicans have no plan to lower costs for Americans and have instead proposed giveaways to the wealthy, big corporations, and Big Pharma that will increase the cost of prescription drugs, utility bills, health insurance premiums, and student loan payments for millions.

It's the same old song and dance. Those who support Republicans often complain about the economy, but they end up supporting policies that do nothing to help the average person.

As a constitutional conservative, I completely support free market capitalism. However, the so-called plan mentioned in this thread which Biden's team has put forth??? Has that plan been enacted and has that plan done any good at all? Inquiring minds want to know.

Has that plan become more than just a press release by the White House? Also, I completely reject the notion that Congressional Republicans are proposing big giveaways to the Big Pharma corporations.

I'll wait for her announcement rather than accepting the Breitbart take on the Breitbart prediction.

Generally I do strongly support monopoly prevention. But I dont support anti gouging legislation.

I wouldn't blame R for all the problems because from what I've seen in the last 30 years homelessness has gotten worse.

Why is increasing competition a bad idea?

One example:

Concentration in Meatpacking

Meatpacking industries underwent striking change over the past 40 years. In 1980, the four largest beef packers accounted for 36 percent of all purchases of steers and heifers, while the four largest pork packers (a different group of firms) accounted for 34 percent of all purchases of market hogs. By 1995, the largest four firms accounted for 81 percent of steer and heifer purchases. Concentration in hogs grew more slowly, but by 2019 the four largest packers accounted for 67 percent of all hog purchases. This concentration of production among fewer packers means there are fewer firms buying livestock.

--> In most parts of the country, ranchers and farmers now have two to four buyers for their cattle or hogs.
