  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What modern day democratitically elected government is comparable to the Roman Empire?
The UK? We had Empire for a bit. Not a perfect fit but who else? France? Russia?

I’d say UK would be the best modern fit. What with us rolling over a lot of the planet.

But you know Queen Victoria was only Empress of India and not England?

Caesaropapism is a funny thing. But I digress.

Also Japan.

If it's a government from biblical times then the punishments are usually biblical in nature. You know, stoning, crucifixion. Render unto Caesar or get nailed to a cross perhaps. Now if you want to update the concept and use North Korea as an example (render unto Kim Jong Un etc), then I think you need to use a democratically elected government as a comparison (render unto Yoon Suk Yeol etc).

Otherwise please stop wasting my time.
Okay what is your point? That we should respect the authority of the government?

You have an issue with a law you believe is illegal, you challenge it in court. You don't simply violate the law and then complain when you get punished for doing so.
Many Covid regulations were a travesty not based in constitutional law or sound medical practice but were an exercise in totalitarianism.

Regardless, people don't get have the right to just ignore laws they disagree with. Our system has a way of challenging laws that might seem unjust.

"Hanson eventually decided to re-open her business and defied Walz's renewed shutdown order for bars and restaurants six times between December 2020 and January 2021.

She was convicted in December 2021 on misdemeanor charges and received the maximum sentence of 90 days and a $1,000 fine. Hanson ended up serving two-thirds of her sentence, 60 days. "

Woman breaks law and goes to jail. Not a story.
Contrary to the claim made in the article, she did not have a "right" to open a business selling foodstuffs. Such businesses are strongly regulated and require permits to operate. She had no more right to operate the business when it was prohibited than she would have had if under a closure order from the health inspector.

I’m not a Christian so I don’t have to follow what the Bible says about slavery.

Can you point me to the pro slavery parts of the Bible a Christian would have to adhere to? If your assertion were correct?
Your understanding of Romans 13 would by necessity lead to supporting slavery.

Except that there were other similar businesses that were not closed down.

If you cheerfully accept the punishment yes.

Remarkable. Christian follows law = good. Christian breaks law, gets caught, accepts punishment = good.

Christian who breaks law and gets away with it = bad?

That's awfully convenient that the rule only condemns those Christians we don’t know about. Doesn't seem much point to that at all.

All the law is

We can skip this part...I certainly wasn't trying to condemn her for not following the law. Now, it appears you don't either as she accepted her punishment.

The Roman Empire was a democratically elected government? Or do you not know what it means to offer incense to the emperor?

They still had a Senate....at least till around 600AD I think.

Or God wanted them to defy the order, knowing what the cost was.

Well then he probably shouldn't have placed that whole follow the law thing in the Romans section when writing the Bible, eh?

And others that were exactly the same which did close. If you do some investigation you'll be able to find out why.

...so she knowingly broke the order...and is now decrying the cosequences?

I think that's the point right? He shouldn't have created a tyrannical order? She's got a right to complain about being punished for not giving in to tyranny.

Which proves the order was asinine.

How were their economies affected longer other than the fact that here in GA people did not want to WORK? That was one thing that took forever is people who worked in the service businesses did not want to work because it was easier to collect a check. Take the checks away and people will work even for peanuts awfuly quick
Does that apply to all people who live off government checks, or just certain groups?

Wow. You are really missing the point. I’ll just ignore that you introduced Romans 13 to the discussion.

Generally speaking...it's a majority those who are on some welfare programs.

The safety net is supposed to be for those who have had some tragedy befall them and need help getting back on their feet and contributing to society.

As such, most find a job before their welfare run out.

that applies to anyone who will not work not who is deemed UNABLE to work big difference. Although I will also say that as someone who does receive social seurity though my father was also good with money so we also have some saved I do not EXPECT to live the same standard of living as others do either This is not to say that I do not feel there should not be improvements in the welfare version of social security ( mostly that the max benefit should be based on where someone lives and not a flat amount, but it is to say that I realize that if I am receiving asistance that is not designed to have me living high on the hog.

....not giving in to a public health order intended to protect the lives of Minnesotans.

When the next pandemic arrives, one wonders what a GOP controlled governor would actually do. Any orders given in the name of the greater good will be spun as "tyranny".

Those otders at least in terms of using incarceration to enforce them ( unless we are talking about house arrest) will be as stupid next time as they were this time.
