I used to also believe that was hard proof of a spherical earth. There is actually a pretty simple explanation if you are open to having this belief challenged.


If you've ever looked up video of "anticrepuscular" sun rays, it shows direct visual proof of how celestial-scale objects (that extend well beyond our horizon line) will seem to converge on a point as they get further away. The sun rays seem to be converging at two opposite "poles" at opposite horizons, yet this is just a simple effect of perspective.

Picture those sun rays "rotating" around the earth on the axis of their convergence points. One convergence point would be rotating the opposite direction of the other. as if standing below an axle between two wheels.

If we add the stars onto that same visual space (with points converging at opposing horizons) we see how we have an opposite star rotation in the north and the south.

We can see a demonstration this counter-rotational effect in nature with a small dome shaped lens.

The further you move towards the north pole, the more that Polaris appears to rise up above the horizon, higher into the sky. This is like watching the roof of a skyscraper appear to rise up further into the sky, the closer you get to it.

The further south you move (towards the outer edge of the earth) the more that Polaris appears to sink below the horizon, and we get the same type of star trail appearance from the equator and then the south.

That is the gist of it. I will try to elaborate more later.


What is interesting is that most of the belief in a spherical rotating earth is derived from geometrically inverting the actual sphericity of the vault of stars rotating around the fixed surface of the earth.
