  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Stupid California!

Southern California fast food jobs hit record high despite minimum wage hike

They cant even obey the laws of capitalism!!!

Fast food industry sees 2.2% increase in employment.

And look. The best thing is that workers are getting more money. Despite all the kvetching and all the rightwingers predicting doom because workers get a piece of rhr big mambo.

The American Right: More pointless friction against helping American worker since well, as long as necessary.

I just got home from a visit to San Diego - all the prices were so much higher than last year - especially fast food.

This is a bubble that will pop.

Why do Americans always get their knickers in a knot when someone suggests an increase to the US minimum wage?

This year the Australian minimum wage was increased by 3.75%. Last year it increased by 5.75%. In 2022 it went up 5.2%. These increases are not just limited to fast food workers or service staff. ALL workers on the minimum rate get a mandatory increase. That’s around 25% of the workforce.

Whenever I mention this on CF I get inundated with suggestions that increases to the minimum spell death to businesses along with rampant price increases.

Australia has been reviewing and resetting its minimum wage annually since 1907 and remains one of the strongest economies in the world.

American workers are happily drinking the capitalist Kool Aid supplied by your capitalist dominated economy.

The result – a ridiculously low minimum wage and Dickensian working conditions.

State minimum wages often exceed the federal minimum wage, and there are carve-outs for certain jobs. In certain industries where the carve-outs don't exist, many of the same people who advocate for a higher minimum wage turn a blind eye to illegal immigrants who are paid less than what American workers would be paid for the same job, which is sometimes less than the minimum wage. In fact, they'll argue for continued illegal immigration for the purpose of retaining that cheap labor. So those people don't really want an actual minimum wage, because by their own arguments it doesn't serve their interests. All of this points to the federal minimum wage being pointless.

Find me one person who both argues for minimum wage increases and wants to keep immigrants coming in order to keep wages low. Who are these people?

I guess those extra workers were employed to take all that extra income to the bank. Extra income spent by those extra workers who have more dollars in their weekly wage packet.

I'm no economic guru, but I do know that companies don't employ more people when things are going badly.

This is a fairly stupid argument.

You're effectively arguing that you shouldn't have a minimum wage because some businesses will break the law and pay a sub-standard wage. That's like saying don't have laws against theft because some people will continue to steal.

Not all industries use underpaid illegal migrants. Those that do use cheap illegal labour are actually supported by a low minimum wage.

"my trusty spreadsheet looked at jobs data for “limited-service” restaurants for Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties."

So apparently this is according to a spreadsheet made by an opinion columnist.

A search for "fast food employment decrease in california" produced:

AI Overview:

California fast food restaurants have slashed nearly 10,000 jobs because of the state's new $20 minimum wage as struggling franchises cut labor costs and raise prices to survive

I copied your search. This was the third or fourth link down.

Here’s something you might want to know about this claim. It’s baloney, sliced thick. In fact, from September through January, the period covered by the ad, fast-food employment in California has gone up, as tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Federal Reserve. The claim that it has fallen represents a flagrant misrepresentation of government employment figures.

I'll take a stab at what might happen. The market will adjust to accept that higher minimum wage. Those companies who were paying their workers too little because they couldn't make a buck paying them a reasonable wage may go out of business. Those companies who can absorb the higher wages by a small increase in what they charge will survive. If the price is worth what they sell.

Capitalism eh?

People will continue to flee California and stores and fast-food places will continue to close their doors. It is unsustainable as it is.

Looks like there's contradictory information out there. I wonder if the LA Times is one of those sources that said Joe Biden is sharp as a tack and any footage of him exhibiting cognitive issues was doctored.

You're calling the argument stupid while admitting it is right. As you are saying, those that use cheap illegal labor are supported by a low minimum wage. Hence, it is in their interest to keep that wage low. Which means a higher minimum wage that they can't get around will harm them.

Now, what I said is that there is no point to a federal minimum wage. States can set minimum wages, and they will often exceed the federal minimum wages.

Actually , I like having freedom and rights . Which Red states / other states are trying to get rid of. Hopefully CA, isn't stupid at all.
Do you think business owners should have rights? Like, maybe, the right to set wages?

Actually no. Otherwise a lot of them would drop minimum wages even further to make more money. If you can't make a profit paying minimum wage then you'll go out of business. You deserve to go out of business.

Wow! You mean a business whose purpose is to make money would try to make even more? That’s just crazy talk.

People aren't fleeing California because of the jobs. The job market in California is among America's best. The problem is that housing is unaffordable. And that's not really unique to California.
