  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think people forget. Fast food restaurants and minimum wage was for our school kids. to make money while living at home. Or as a part time job. It was never meant to be a job for a sole source of income. thats why they pay minimum wage.

In ohio. My normal McDonalds mean has went from 5 dollars to over 12 (closer to 13) that is well over a 100 % increase. I have noticed it is just as expensive to eat their then at a steak house anymore.

But the economy is doing so great right? Not!!

The economy is doing great---for those who are already well off.

Not even sure it is great for them. to be honest.. While it does not hurt them as much, it still affects them.

as for a free enterprise system, you work to make a prophet. Anyone who thinks they can take away from that prophet by raising taxes, or forcing them to pay higher wages, or whatever means, has to know. you will not hurt them, you will hurt those who purchase the stuff they create.

we should know this by what happened to GM. The unions made it so GM paid their employees so much, that they had to lower the quality of their vehicles to make ends meet. it eventually led them to file bankruptcy.

Detroit is full of rotting car manufacturing plants which are dead because of the unions, and other issues..

Not so much for the workers who need to pay bills.
No concern for their inability to pay their bills with a salary that’s too low, though. They should just get better jobs, right?

Well now they can.

I predict you’ll change this to the proper homophone.

No, they're dead because of the outsourcing of manufacturing to other countries (and also a certain amount of lack of innovation from American automakers). Not unions.

Outsourcing happened because of the unions. It was cheaper to manufacture everything elsewhere. Also there was a serious problem with the benefits as well. Now this most certainly was not all the unions fault, after all the companies did agree to it. But when they wanted to re negotiate the unions said no and this led to problems.

Unions aren't bad on their face. But they can get bad in time. And not every job can or will unionize. I doubt you will see anytime soon the National McDonalds Union or the 7 Eleven Union of America.

This thread has gone nowhere. A living wage isn't going to happen anywhere because it's not viable. All of the reasons why it's not gave been presented and no one advocating for at has presented any solutions for the problems.

No one has advocated for mandating it. So the discussion is moot. So until the left leaning states like California or New York mandate it across their state and show it works, no one else is going to do it. You have to show how all the problems can be fixed in order for it to work. So far no one has done it.

Outsourcing happened in the 90s even in non-unionized manufacturing, such as the tech industry. It was going to happen as soon as dirt-cheap labor was found overseas, made possible by bi-partisan treaties.

If people didnt made poor choices, those jobs would never have existed in the first place.

I get it, gas station quality food has a place, for folks that forgot to package lunch. But taco bell, McDonald's, etc?

You may think those workers are contributing to their college fund.. but your health insurance is running the actuary table too ans you're paying for it

My dad retired from GM. And a good friend worked for GM working on the line turning a screwdriver making over 100 grand a year for That When the plant closed, my friend was lost. He had no real talent, And nothing job he could work at would pay him anywhere near the money or benefits GM paid him. He lost his family and his way.

PS. My dad showed me his retirement check once. He made more than i did. He was general tradesman (Pipe fitter)

My brother in law was an engineer for Honda motor company. And they made less than the person on the line made.

They outsourced because of the unions. And their product became crap because of the unions.

Non-unionized jobs have also been outsourced, and non-unionized auto plants have been shut down.

That happens when the workforce demands so much.
That happens when a cheaper workforce can be found elsewhere. Or can be imported. That's why Trump won't actually get rid of illegal labor in the US, nor will Trump get much manufacturing back to the US from China or Vietnam or the Philippines and other places where labor is dirt cheap. An American worker can't reasonably work for $15 a day.
