  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

FBI identifies Trump rally shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks <--- Thread is about the perpetrator, the crime, and the motivation, not Trump

What nonsense.
Just correcting your grammar. You said they don’t have no evidence
”They don't have no evidence. They have no evidence (as yet) indicating a motive (or conspiracy).”
So it’s your nonsense

No, if there is no evidence that he acted with anyone else, logic dictates that he acted alone. We don't know that there is zero evidence...we only know that there is little evidence that he behaved abnormally.
"No, if there is no evidence that he acted with anyone else"

not what I said. If no evidence has been found, it doesn't mean he acted alone. It could mean that he took careful steps to cover his tracks

A 20 year-old male in 2024 is very likely to have a social media presence, Internet history, chat history, etc. --for a guy to have NO history is very suspicious

When conversations with others reveal a humdrum personality, it's not that unthinkable. It could be evidence of recent sudden dramatic withdrawal.

Absence of evidence _is_ evidence of absence. Rumsfeld was wrong. It's certainly not evidence to spin out an entire conspiracy theory.

humdrum personalities don't go launch elaborate assassination attempts on a presidential candidate

ever

they are motivated by insanity (Son of Sam types), self-promotion and fame (Hinkley), or politics and ideology (Princip, etc.)

now I realize the political left just wants this to go away, and is basically saying "nothing to see here", but it isn't going to go away.

assassins have motives and leave evidence

they don't do things spontaneously and leave absolutely no evidence

if a registered Democrat who expressed support for the Democratic Party and Joe Biden suddenly decides one day to shoot the president, we should be asking "why would he do that? what was the motive? this doesn't make sense"

sometimes, conspiracy theories are real, as in the case of Gavrillo Princip

That sounds totally wrong. Often its their humdrum-ness that keeps them on the outs, socially. And so they concoct a "big plan" to get themselves attention. Probly the only reason they dont go for presidents is just theres not much opportunity, compared to other targets closer to hand.

I mean, "he was just a quiet guy who kept to himself" is pretty much a cliche - because it happens a lot.

he was always a quiet guy who kept to himself

but after the killing, we find all kinds of crazy things in his house, including letters to Jodie Foster, political manifestos, and notes about talking dogs

but in this case we find an basically empty house with a scrubbed computer?

Not a direct answer to your question, but AP story spells out the sequence if not the timeline.

[Rallygoers point shooter out to local LEO. LEO climbs to roof; shooter points gun at him/her.]

The officer retreated down the ladder, and the gunman quickly fired toward Trump, the officials said.

Can't help but think if this guy had been black the cop would have immediately opened fire. Who can point a gun at a cop in any situation and live to tell about it? Even if that cop was too scared to approach him with the rifle there should have been an immediate radio call and convicted felon Trump should have been immediately ushered off stage. Literally over the radio "SHOOTER! SHOOTER! SHOOTER! I SAY AGAIN WE HAVE A SHOOTER!"

I see chatter about his voter registration:

According to the CNN article, Crooks was a registered republican, however...

Federal Election Commission records show that a donor listed as Thomas Crooks with the same address gave to a Democratic-aligned political action committee called the Progressive Turnout Project in January 2021.

For many people (especially young people), when they register to vote, they often just register as the same thing as their parents. (that's what I did when I was 18, and didn't bother to change it until I was in my late-20's.)

So I don't know if either of these is enough to establish a potential motive.

Usually, when younger people like this commit such crimes, they often leave behind "manifestos" or several breadcrumbs on their social media (which I'm sure the Secret Service and FBI have already subpoenaed)

Buffalo shooter manifesto was scrubbed from the internet in 1 day and media reported his motives 2 days later.

Nashville trans shooter....still unreleased and "motive" is still unreported by most media.

I think that the longer we aren't told a motive, the more likely the motive was politically left.

Hinkley was kind of crazy. Actually crazy. This guy just seems more a sad bullied loner. And smart too, aparently. He probably knew theyd come for his soc media and scrubbed it himself for whatever reason.

If there was an actual conspiracy here, the last thing "they" would do is fabricate a personality and oops! forget to give him a soc media presence.
