When I was a kid, the Kuiper belt was discovered around 18 years before learning about it (so 2010-1992 = 18 years). Fast forward to New Year's Day of 2019, and the New Horizons spacecraft flew by a Kuiper belt asteroid for the first time. Yeah, looking at the design, Project Orion is way too massive to be built cheaply. It makes Musk's Starship look very small. When I was your age... we thought "maybe it exists". Of course we didn't realize we knew of one object pair in it already.
Frankly it was kind of dumb. Just the thought of all that mass to push against makes the "starship" rocket look tiny.
This was what I was thinking of:
Nuclear thermal rocket - Wikipedia
I used to be a "rocket surgeon" on this site, but no.
I have a friend who is into rockets. I haven't looked into them deeply since the SRS was a "commercially viable launch system". (And then it blew up.)
I have heard of the nuclear thermal rockets, and those could work also, especially for interplanetary travel. Also, I do remember that your profile said "rocket surgeon", and it is cool that you have a friend that is into rockets. My boss built model rockets (solid fuel, of course), but he is now too busy to build any.
