  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Have you ever considered America is now a tale of two very different realities, and there's an ever-growing class of people who aren't being served by current policy?

Yes, you have a valid point. A majority of us (middle class down to poor folks regardless of political affiliation) feel we have been neglected by government. That's not what I was talking about tho. I'll give you one tiny example.

In reality, Donald Trump withheld funds from Ukraine in an extortion attempt to benefit his reelection. Congress established the Impoundment Control Act in 1974 because Nixon did the same thing, withholding funding he wasn't authorized to withhold. Mr Trump broke that law and republicans prioritized political party over the rules of law, saying it was not a big deal. Donald Trump was impeached for his self-serving actions (as Obama would have been). I cannot even consider voting for people who are willing to put their political desires over the good of our nation. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.

This is your view, but from my standpoint I see the situation very differently.

Trump justly withheld funds as was within His purview as President, while Democrats in Congress opposed the action it didn't make the action itself one done in bad faith against the American people.

There was a time in America we could have disagreements, or at least so I thought, without such severe accusations of dishonestly where there's no proof any such dishonestly occurred but rather the facts show the action as one in the interest of the American people.

I have to say I don't understand the new obsession the left has with Ukraine, but it began many years before Trump ever took office. Clearly, Trump hit a nerve...

Me personally? I'd love to understand why the left (which includes some who lay claim to be a part of the right) is so terribly obsessed with the affairs of this country.

Interesting that Biden is doing this, withholding of Congressional apportionment for our allies, Israel.

Yet so far, no one is impeaching him for it. Seems laws only matter when we can make an accusation of some kind against Trump.

Truth does not hinge on our belief or disbelief. Donald Trump broke the law.

Former President Donald Trump told a national gathering of Christian conservative activists Saturday not to let the secular left "silence" and "shame" them in a bid to keep them from voting, saying Christianity would be in "tatters" if President Joe Biden is reelected.

On Saturday, Trump addressed the Faith & Freedom Coalition's Road to Majority conference in Washington, D.C., encouraging attendees to do all they can to encourage fellow Christians to vote in the upcoming November election, bemoaning that not all Christians vote.

"We need Christians to turn out in the largest numbers ever to tell Crooked Joe Biden … 'Joe, you're fired,'" said Trump, the 2024 presumptive Republican nominee for president.

Continued below.
They all pander to the different groups in an effort to garner votes.

Interestingly, Mr Trump doesn't say "us" when referring to Christians. He says "your religion will be in tatters". This will be overlooked I'm sure.
Mr. "Two Corinthians" may not be a Christian? I wouldn't be shocked. I will say that only God knows the human heart, so I don't know. I just wouldn't be shocked.

How your country got into this choice is baffling. Sure, our Prime Minister (Trudeau) is arguably a lightweight pretty boy who would never have been elected were it not for his famous and eminently competent father. But Trump and Biden? Come on, man. Both are addled and one is a shameless con artist who somehow duped millions into believing an election was stolen.

It's not even questionable to me.
Anyone who says he is without sin doesn't have truth in him. And God is truth. One cannot be Christian and make God into a liar. While only God knows the heart, we can see by the fruits of others whether or not they walk in light or darkness. He gave us truth with the Holy Spirit I believe.

Is that the LBJ ad that showed the little girl picking the flower with a nuke going off in the background? Or was that another candidate? Memory fades, but fear-mongering lingers on...
Now it's bizarre internet claims that Biden "opened the borders" and screams that he's at once, senile and an evil mastermind. It's gotten a lot crazier since Trump introduced "truthful hyperbole" into politics.

Well, Biden seems to have been sharp enough to outsmart Kevin McCarthy and the House republicans in the budget negotiations. Which admittedly, is not a very high bar, but still...

Goes to show that fear-mongering was a thing back in the 1960s.
Oh yeah, dude. Back then it was fear of the Commies and "better dead than red". Like Solomon says, "there's nothing new under the sun."

That is so true. Nothing new under the sun, except a few times worse nowadays compared to in the past.

This you can't read too much into. That's just real. I was Muslim before coming to Christ and I'm absolutely and definitely saved.

However, because I was never part of the Christian culture, depending on what context I'm talking about I have before said "you" when speaking of Christians.

Why? Because there's parts of Christian culture I haven't touched or don't really feel a part of.

So, that's not a concern for whether he's saved or not. We all know that if he is saved it was much later in life.

Though I will say, whether or not he's saved has no bearing on the office of Presidency either. We don't hold it against Biden.
Biden was baptized as an infant and confirmed. Like Jimmy Carter, who is also pro-choice, his values are about 110% more in alignment with the Gospel than any single-issue Republican.

I am not sure exactly what your point is, but I would point out that by any actual quantifiable measures, life, on average, is getting much better over time for most people.

That is true, for most people, especially folks in certain parts of Europe, however, mass shootings have gone up in the US. We can blame the far-right for allowing AR-15s and stuff, and allowing bump stocks. Also, cost of living is going up, as has been for many decades. Hey, at least TVs are dirt cheap nowadays. Life is pretty good though in 2024, even with high prices compared to life in the 1950s. :)

I was gonna respond with something like, "oh, it's been this bad before", but then I remembered this Scripture... apparently we cannot imagine how bad it's going to be in comparison to times past:

Matthew 24:21-22 NKJV

"For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened."

If it's true that the quality of life is better for most people than any time in history, apparently it isn't going to last.

As for today, though I'm not a great student of comparative history, I have to wonder whether we are using the best criteria to judge that quality of life. Just one of many factors to consider (in addition to the noted increase in violence) - despite the wealth of the nations, the earth is still plagued by mass starvation in oppressed countries (and even in 'free' countries). We have all the resources to provide for the whole earth, always have I would hazard to guess, but just can't seem to conquer the obstacles to actually stop talking and do it.

And doesn't it seem obscene somehow that those blessed with resources lavish our hard-earned money on being entertained to death, in a futile attempt to escape the vacuousness of our temporal ambitions?

Ah yes, we have been here before... "let them eat cake" and "the earth was filled with violence."

No wonder that God's patience with humankind will wear thin one day. Thankfully there's still hope for the individual through Jesus Christ:

John 16:33 NIV

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
