  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The insidious way violence is changing American politics — and shaping the 2024 election. (includes a bad word, but not as much as the one above)

In early 2021, Richer was an Arizona Republican official who regularly attended local party events. At the time, he was the newly elected county recorder of Maricopa County. The job was a new level of prominence — he was now the most important election supervisory official in the state’s largest county — but going to Arizona Republican events was routine: the kind of thing that Richer, like any state politician, had done hundreds of times before.

But at one event, the crowd heckled and harassed him. When he tried to leave, they dragged him back in, yanking on his arms and shoulders, to berate him about the allegedly stolen 2020 election. He started to worry: Would his own people, fellow Republican Party members, seriously hurt him?

Across the board and around the country, data reveals that threats against public officials have risen to unprecedented numbers — to the point where 83 percent of Americans are now concerned about risks of political violence in their country.

As a result, the threat of violence is now a part of the American political system, to the point where Republican officials are — by their own admissions — changing the way they behave because they fear it. For Richer, the price back in 2021 was high — and enough to prevent him from safely participating in his own party’s politics.

Brave Republicans at all levels of government, from local officials like Richer to Sen. Mitt Romney (UT), have been warning us of the dangers going into 2024.

Data has shown extraordinary levels of threats against mayors, federal judges, election administrators, public health officials, and even school board members. It’s hard to know how large the increase is for many of these local positions because no one has been keeping records for all that long. In the past, there was simply no need.

The unique importance of Republican-on-Republican violence

Broadly speaking, Democrats have safety in numbers from the far right: Because the party in general opposes Trump and Trumpism, individual members’ anti-Trump positioning is less likely to attract ire from his supporters. By contrast, individual Republicans who dissent from the Trumpist line immediately get singled out in conservative and far-right media — attracting the sort of attention reserved for a handful of “most hated” Democrats such as Reps. Nancy Pelosi (CA) or Ilhan Omar (MN).

For all these reasons, threats of violence are likely to be uniquely effective on Republicans when issued from their own base. The threats work, more than anything else, to disciplineelected Republicans — to force them to toe whatever line the Trumpists want them to walk, or else.

“They say ‘it’s never been this bad before.’ Well, on the one hand, it has,” says Freeman, the Yale professor. “On the other hand ... I’m talking about the lead-up to the Civil War.”

per political editor @MarkMaxwellTV:

Someone asks the GOP panel about rumors that Rep. Chip Roy might try to oust Speaker Johnson. “I love Chip Roy, but Chip Roy is a major pain in the [butt] for all of us a few times,” Rep. Ronny Jackson says. Suggests Roy could use a “code red” beat down from ‘A Few Good Men.’

Just continuing the Shasta County saga

Ditto, but now with at least a little menace to match thread title.

Public tirades, recall threats as Shasta County roils from decision to dump voting machines

At Tuesday’s board meeting, Supervisor Mary Rickert implored her colleagues to reverse their decision, saying it was “irresponsible” and ”terribly reckless.”

“I am horrified with what is happening in Shasta County,” she told them. “This is going to be your legacy.”

Supervisor candidate accuses incumbent of Satan worship over randomly issued '666' on license plate

Just when you thought Shasta County supervisors' meetings couldn't get much more contentious, a candidate for supervisor pretty much accused a sitting supervisor of being a follower of Satan.

District 3 Supervisor Mary Rickert's license plate reportedly has the number "666" on it. District 2 Candidate, Laura Hobbs, called attention to the numbers, holding up a copy of Rickert's license plate in the meeting.

[Rickert:] "That's the license plate [the DMV] sent to me. I did not request those numbers. It's an invasion of my privacy that people are going around sharing my license plate number and I really resent that."

Republican Congressman Leaves Politics After Vicious Senate Primary Led to ‘Death Threats’

Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT) announced on Friday he will not seek reelection after a dramatic bid for U.S. Senate in Montana resulted in a “death threat against” him, as well as “false and defamatory rumors against me and my family.”

Rosendale, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, briefly joined the GOP primary to run against Sen. John Tester (D-MT) in November. He quickly quit after Donald Trump and the National Republican Senatorial Committee endorsed his opponent – ex-Navy SEAL and aerospace millionaire Tim Sheehy.

Rosendale came under harsh criticism from many on the right, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) who blasted him online as a “grifter.”

"The current attacks have made it impossible for me to focus on my work to serve you. So, in the best interest of my family and the community, I am withdrawing from the House race and will not be seeking office."

Public tirades, recall threats as Shasta County roils from decision to dump voting machines

Supervisor Patrick Jones, who spearheaded the movement to dump Dominion, shot back: “This is going to be our legacy. We are going to have free and fair elections in Shasta County.”

Many in the audience, meanwhile, beseeched the board to rethink the move. “You are building an inefficient, costly voting system predicated on lies and misinformation,” Susanne Baremore told the board. “Bring us back to the 21st century.”

Patrick Jones, a former chair of the five-member board, was soundly defeated in the Super Tuesday election, according to results released by the county registrar Friday afternoon. With 98% of the vote counted, Jones’ opponent, Matt Plummer, a nonprofit adviser, was winning outright with nearly 60% of the vote.

It marked a stunning turn for Jones, a gun store manager who in his one term in office has emerged as a leading voice in an ultraconservative insurgence that transformed this largely rural Northern California county into a national poster child for hard-right governance and election denialism.

In another closely watched primary race, Jones’ political ally, Supervisor Kevin Crye, was surviving a recall election by just 46 votes. Crye made headlines last year when he enlisted support for nixing Dominion machines from Mike Lindell, the MyPillow chief executive and pro-Trump election denier.

Even if Crye survives the recall, Jones’ loss is expected to upend leadership on the board, where ultraconservatives currently have a 3-2 majority.

Meanwhile, Allen Long, a retired Redding police lieutenant and relative moderate, was the front-runner in a race to fill an open board seat representing western Shasta County. In a four-way race, Long had 50.3% of the vote on Friday and was narrowly avoiding a runoff.

Running a distant second, with 19% of the vote, was Laura Hobbs, who said in her candidate statement she is a stay-at-home mom who is “100% MAGA and America First.” She recently accused incumbent Supervisor Mary Rickert — a moderate Republican who regularly opposes Jones and Crye — of worshiping Satan because her license plate has the number “666” on it.

Just this week, two prominent Republican lawmakers encouraged voters to either use violence against protesters or carry weapons.

The Republican US Senate candidate Kari Lake, who is vying for a seat in Arizona, told her supporters to “strap on a Glock” ahead of the 2024 elections.

During a campaign speech in Arizona on Sunday, Lake warned the crowd that Washington DC was a “swamp” and encouraged people to carry a weapon in preparation for an “intense” election year.

A day later, the Republican senator Tom Cotton said Americans should “take matters into their own hands” when dealing with pro-Palestinian protesters, encouraging vigilantism.

Cotton, the far-right senator of Arkansas, encouraged people to “forcibly remove” demonstrators who are blocking traffic, a common protest tactic used by those calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Colorado Republican Party issues call to burn all Pride flags

The Colorado GOP’s mass email titled “God Hates Pride,” read, in part, “The month of June has arrived and, once again, the godless groomers in our society want to attack what is decent, holy, and righteous so they can ultimately harm our children.”

The party’s message was signed by chairman Dave Williams. A post from the Colorado Republican Party on X, formerly Twitter, read simply, “Burn all the #pride flags this June.”

I'm sure it's only a coincidence that all you need to do is remove a single letter in order to change that into a common anti-gay rallying cry from the '90s and early 2000s.

At the time, the response was "Oh, that's some tiny rabid sect. That's not what Real Christians™ are like."

Now the state GOP can make a punny riff off of it.
