Do you believe recreational use of fentanyl is something that ought to actually be considered?
My opinion is to actually fight the war on drugs. I think people put on a show to divide us further.

It’s reality. The only question is if the trade is to be illegal, controlled by the cartels with the violence and contaminated product of unknown potency that brings or legal with the product regulated by the law.

Agreed 100%. Money sadly comes before safety in this country, my friend.

Safety > time. Patience is a virtue.

A lot of disturbing information in this article from newsnationnow.com
Is the DEA and US law enforcement doing enough to oppose the drug cartels? What more can, or should, our American government and law enforcement do against the threat posed by the Mexican fentanyl drug cartels?
A good solution would be to throw anyone caught using fentanyl into a "fentanyl users" prison for a minimum of five years. Second offense, 10 years. Third offense - life in a regular prison. All inmates would be there for that crime only. The main reason is to get them out of contact with the public., not to rehabilitate. And getting anywhere near enough drugs illegally into the place would be quite difficult. Or it at least should be.

Two lessons that can be learned there:

1. Life is hard. It's harder when you're stupid.
2. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

The problem with western culture is, frankly, that we are too "nice" to criminals, or lawbreakers of any kind. This may help some to understand:

Yes, our prisons are well known for their lack or drugs.

If the outcome is the lesser of the two evils, then it's a possible option.

Legalization can potentially remove the monopoly of violent cartels by greatly reducing their profits, forcing them to move out of the country (the ideal outcome) which will also eliminate gang/mob problems, greatly reduced gang/cartel related crimes/violence.

The major problem of legalization though is making recreational drugs accessible/affordable to more people. So you'll have to weigh the possible outcomes.

Implementation may be much harder in USA than in Canada due to bribing.

Not for recreational use which is what’s being discussed.

I’m fairly liberal on drug issues, but legalizing fentanyl would be astronomically stupid. We had a giant opioid problem when people had to get prescriptions from doctors for oxy. A free market for something strong enough to cause you to OD from an accidental exposure is… not a good idea.

Then we are left with a black market providing that very strong substance in unknown potency while empowering violent criminals, that’s a worse idea.

Fair points there.
It is the lethality of illegal fentanyl that is killing drug users.

But drug cartels are already dealing solely via black market. Their dealings on the streets is also black market.

And they have all kinds of drugs, from weak to strong.

If you take away the weak and medium ones from their profits, it can make their operation less successful. They'll have less money to bribe officials, less money to distribute, etc, etc. Gangs and mobs will shrink in number and possibly reduce crime related to organized crime.

They legalized marijuana in a ton of places and the cartels are just as big and powerful as ever. I don't think legalization works.

Almost as if they weren’t exclusively dealing in cannabis and lucrative black markets remain for other substances.

They aren't exclusively dealing in fentanyl either. So, any claim that legalizing fentanyl would hurt the cartels is a nonstarter.

I'm sorry that your country has such lax safety standards.
I would blame the design of the machine. It would be better if it were like one of those car washing machines - the ones that lock your wheels and move you on a conveyer belt of some kind. No need for a driver then.

Ending prohibition as a whole would.

Why do you think that?
Were the drugs they supplied available legally they would be shut out of the market in a similar manner to how their predecessors were shut out of the alcohol industry at the end of that period of prohibition.
