Is the DEA and US law enforcement doing enough to oppose the drug cartels? What more can, or should, our American government and law enforcement do against the threat posed by the Mexican fentanyl drug cartels?

Even the left says that these cartels are real, and this issue has been going on/reported on for over two years or more (2022), however, the issue dates back to 2012 (Justice Department Announces Charges Against Sinaloa Cartel’s Global Operation). Also, cryptocurrency has been used for illicit drug trafficking, and as of 2023, was traced by the DHS. Man, this stuff is scary. Kids, don't do drugs. Glad I stay light-years (trillions of miles/kilometers) away from this stuff.

From Allsides: Follow the crypto: In its fight against fentanyl, DHS is tracing cryptocurrency used by Mexican drug cartels

I worked for CBP at the San Ysidro Port of Entry for years - and I can tell you that they care more about commerce - keeping the cars moving - then they do about catching drugs or criminals.

If my lane slowed down because I started inspecting for longer than a few seconds - I would get a call from my Supervisor - telling me to hurry up.

I did catch a murderer once. That felt good. To actually do the job I swore to do.

Yeah, that is sad that your supervisor got mad for you inspecting the cars for too long. At least you caught a killer.

In this decade (2020s), the CBP is hoping to install x-ray machines with AI to scan for drugs before cars pull up to the human inspectors. The tech is expensive though: CBP wants to use AI to scan for fentanyl at the border

Quoted from The Verge: "The [CBP] agency hopes to scan 40 percent of passenger vehicles and 70 percent of commercial trucks by the end of 2025."

That is good. While I was there any and all X-ray scanning was considered a "violation".

We would still have all vehicles X-rayed before they were sent to Secondary - but the occupants had to agree to it.

If they didn't - an officer would need to drive their car through for them. I was X-rayed. A lot.

"Wow. I think those X-rays gave me superpowers!" (Do you know that reference nerd?") :)

It's disgusting, to me, that your supervisor and perhaps others there cares more about commerce than stopping the flow of drugs and criminals at the San Ysidro point of entry.

Well hey, at least the CBP has changed. It is like the rules prevented you from doing your job. Seems like you are a radioactive man (well, that is not exactly how x-rays work, but you get my humor).

I did not get that reference though. I do not follow all shows though.

Agreed 100%. Money sadly comes before safety in this country, my friend. I am glad that @Zaha Torte no longer works for the San Ysidro team, as nobody appreciated his work, and the bosses cared about cashflow, and not catching criminals.

Anyways, it is getting late here, but I will be following this thread.

That is the standard. A lot of money flows through that Port of Entry.

You were so close!

It was the line Milhouse said when he played "Fallout Boy" in the Radioactive Man movie.

He was Radioactive Man's sidekick and got his powers when a medical truck bearing a giant X-Ray Machine fell on him and started blasting him point-blank.

They believe Big Money is more important than the lives of Americans killed by fentanyl and other illegal drugs.

It is what it is. I pray it has improved since then.

Thank you, brother. :)

And for drugs, people should not be using them willy-nilly, and must focus on this verse. Sadly, both Christians and non-Christians alike, abuse drugs just to satisfy their flesh and minds, instead of focusing on Jesus.

Guess I will have to grab the disc from the library of this one. Thank you for the reference. My DVD player is gonna get a workout in the summer when I am done with Deep Space 9, with all these movies on my "to watch" list.

Most people (statistically) aren’t criminal nor smuggling illicit substances, treating all as such isn’t a civilized action.
Sure, it’s great that we employ people at the ports-of-entry…and want them to do good, thorough work, but there’s (legal) commerce to do and slowing that process down means more people employed by us to catch the same numbers of “criminals” and “drug-dealers”.

Tell me again why “more government” is good in this instance?

Perhaps the deaths of thousands upon thousands of Americans annually due to illegal fentanyl is a good reason for stronger borders and much more effective law enforcement efforts against the cartels and drug pushers. What do you think about this?

I think that cartels don‘t break down people’s doors to kill them with fatal doses of opioids.

I think that not wanting to get an X-Ray every time you go across the border is a reasonable thing to ask for, especially for people who do the trip numerous times per year. One X-Ray might be harmless, but the damage adds up.
