They have scripture readings on them, sometimes they have small icons printed on them, etc. What do I do with them? Can I just recycle them? I have quite the stash...
I vote for recycling them. It is the environmentally correct way to dispose of them.

Recycling would be fine if it were just the bulletin itself. But it's not really suitable for sacred images such as icons.

Our parish used to print lovely bulletins with full color icons on the front. But that presents a problem. We have switched now to a photo of the Church building - and then can be recycled no worries.

But if it's an image of an icon, I wouldn't do that.

Yeah, that was my concern -- it seems a bit irreverent to just toss it in the recycling or trash. Thank you!

if you gotta get rid of them, burn them and bury the ashes where there is no foot traffic.
thanks for the help! I'll keep them for now since I don't have a place to burn them

You might check with the Church. We usually keep things like blessed flowers, papers like you're describing, etc. and once a month or so they burn it all. Maybe you can just give it to them?

good idea. usually parishes have areas where they put the ashes, where they know the ashes won't be disturbed.

There is nothing irreverent about recycling, even if the bulletins feature icons of St. Joseph or Mary. God said be "good stewards of the Earth". The ink gets removed in the recycling process anyways. :) Yes, I am late by 4.5 years.

You can even use them as kindling also, to help start a wood burning fireplace, but recycling is the best bet, as it is a more respectful use of a bulletin with icons.

not according to the Orthodox Church. we don’t dispose of icons by recycling them into something else.

I understand, but the Bible was made in an era where modern recycling was not a thing, so therefore Jesus did not rule for or against recycling papers with icons on them. All the Bible said was to take care of Creation.

Aren't we talking about graphic representations of icons on paper, not actual icons? But the same treatment of them applies?

Father,

What would we do with old books with ICONS on them that aren't worn out? I would never give them away.

Blessings
