Everyone knows that the American Republican Party is represented by an elephant.

Is the elephant an African elephant or an Indian elephant?

There is no such thing as an Indian elephant. They are called Asian elephants. I am pretty sure India is not the only country the species lives in.

I always wondered why the symbol animal for the Republican Party is an elephant.

BTW did you know there used to be four elephant species living at the same time? I have no idea when or where the extinct elephants lived.

The origin of the symbols for the two parties goes back to the late 1800s. I don't care what kind of elephant represents the republican party...I want to know what the heck happened to the party. It's unrecognizable these days. Maybe it's finally time for a third party. Let the far Left carry the Democrat name, let the far Right carry the Republican label, and the remaining 80% of us who share a lot of values in common can form the Common Sense party.

I don't like disagreeing with you, but the World Wildlife fund says that there is such a thing as an Indian Elephant.

Maybe I should amend my question. Is the Republican Elephant an African Elephant, an Indian Elephant, or an Asian Elephant?

So everyone who says there are only two elephant species alive today is a liar? As opposed to Indian elephants being one of the two known extinct elephant species because my whole life people said there are only two species left.

You're putting words in my mouth.

It is from a cartoonist in the 1800,s. Republicans represented by the elephant and Democrats by the donkey.

I know why Democrats are represented by the donkey. it is specifically a jackass, from then-President Andrew Jackson's unpopularity. But I always wondered why an elephant was chosen to symbolize the Republican Party.

I have been independent for a long time. Often voting unwinnable 3r parties. Maybe out time has come.

That doesn't explain why Republicans use the elephant as a symbol today.
The cartoonist never really explained why he portrayed the Republicans as an elephant and the Democratic Party as a donkey

Tradition.

How did the tradition start? That has always been the only question.

By that I mean what real life connection do elephants have with the RNC, like jackasses do with the DNC? Without a real life connection, the cartoonist had no reason to pick an elephant for the Republican Party.
