They just aren't keeping their word in the deal they made to increase the debt ceiling. But if this is your opinion, why are you trying to defend against the "blame" being given to Republicans -- shouldn't you gladly shoulder the blame since you believe Republicans are doing the right thing?
The deal obviously fell through, just as they often do when many people are involved.
Time for the democrats to do their part instead of voting against it. Here's the latest attempt yesterday. The party of "nay" voted like sheep following one another, only to blame the Republicans for it not passing. Roll Call 511 Roll Call 511, Bill Number: H. R. 5525, 118th Congress, 1st Session

How’s about working for what’s best for the citizens of America?
Too “old-fashioned”?
Is voting for more debt to saddle our children with the "best"?
We're now paying over a trillion a year just in interest on what we already have.

No, the Republicans are being blamed for not passing anything like a budget appropriation for 2024 to avoid a shutdown.

Democrats are not complaining about 'it' not passing, because 'it' contained many poison pills unpalatable to the party, which is why they didn't vote for it.

There's that "poison pill" excuse I was predicting would be used as the excuse for democrats to vote "no" and ensure a government shut down--only to blame Republicans for it.

Here's a 45 day continuing resolution with a smaller poison pill (no Ukraine funding), and the Democrats vote for it, probably avoiding a government shutdown after it hits the Senate and the White House.

BREAKING: House passes spending bill to avert government shutdown. The bill is now headed to the Senate

Rep. Matt Gaetz's shouting ignored prior to adjournment after spending measure passed

But Gaetz was not recognized and the House adjourned.

Hardliners expected to force a vote on ousting Speaker Kevin McCarthy, just "not yet"

McCarthy slams Republican holdouts for delaying House funding bill

"If you have members in your conference that won’t let you vote for appropriation bills, doesn’t want an omnibus and won’t vote for a stopgap measure — so the only answer is to shut down and not pay our troops — I don’t want to be a part of that team," McCarthy said in remarks after the House vote.

Senate Democrats will meet around 3:45 p.m. ET, according to aide

The Senate will have to start working on it soon if it plans to pass the same bill before the government shuts down.

Interesting nuggets from WaPo's account.

With just hours until the shutdown begins, Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro (D-Conn.), the top Democrat on the appropriations committee, criticized the legislation for leaving out language included in the Senate’s short-term spending bill that would prohibit pay increases for lawmakers.

The only Democratic Rep who voted no was Quigley. "Quigley represents one of the largest Ukrainian communities in Illinois and is co-chair of the Ukraine Caucus."

Republican Study Committee memo breaks down House bill for conservatives

The group notes that the bill, which maintains current spending levels and includes disaster relief funds, does not include the $6 billion in aid for Ukraine that is in a Senate short-term funding bill — an important clarification since scores of Republicans do not want to vote on a clean stopgap measure if it includes funding for Ukraine [their own poison pill]. However, the group also notes that passing the House bill might create a situation where Republicans could later demand border security measures in exchange for Ukraine funding, spelling out clearly that there is still a chance for negotiations to continue on the matter when the next funding deadline is reached.

-

You know House Republicans are not messing around with floor procedures when they tap Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.) to sit in the speaker’s chair. Womack, an institutionalist who loves the House, sharply uses the gavel when it’s in his hands and knows exactly when to use it to cut debate.

That "poison pill" obviously wasn't all that bad since all but one democrat voted for it. In fact, more dems voted for it than Republicans.
Maybe dems are getting tired of all the war-mongering by their party's leaders after all.

Maybe they just don't want the government shut down. It is fun to guess isn't it?

And it took them to the last minute to decide that?
Wonder how long it will take the MSM to notice and report on it. They seem a bit preoccupied with the black democrat that didn't seem to want the vote to go through, and thought pulling a fire alarm was the way to protect democracy.

More guesses, I see.
