  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How is the sermon and bible reading handled in your church? How long is the reading, how long the sermon?
Bible reading happens all during the sermon -- and just prior to the sermon is about a 1 minute Bible reading in addition to what is in the sermon.

My church is probably similar to yours, and we may use the same lectionary. We read a passage from the Old Testament, a Psalm, a passage from one of the Epistles, and a passage from one of the Gospels, as assigned by the lectionary. These readings are done by lay people in the church. I'm one of the lay readers at my church, and it's a ministry that I much enjoy. Homilies range from about 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the preacher's preference -- my current priest tends towards 15+ minutes, but our previous priest preferred 5-7 minutes -- and addresses one or more of the day's assigned readings.

Yes, that is similar except that the gospel is read either by the priest or by a deacon, both are ordained men, rather than by a lay reader.

Oops, yes, same for us. (Except for the "men" part.) Brain lapse.

We use the Revised Common Lectionary, the same as what other Mainline Protestants and Catholics use. Sermons are about 15 minutes, usually exposition of the Gospel reading. Occasionally, the sermon is on the Old Testament reading.

I think that the 2011 revision of the Roman missal in English, to bring it into closer conformity with the Latin typical edition, resulted in the English speaking world veering away from the common lectionary.

Roughly a sermon for children that is around 5 minutes, a sermon for adults that is around 15 minutes, and reading the Torah portion, the haftarah portion, and the NT for around 30 minutes.
