• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Maybe I have been living under a rock all these years, I don't watch the news I don't even watch the weather channel.
But where to start?
Stay away from “video news”.
Read serious news outlets, WSJ, Al Jazeera, BBC, NYT, NYP, WP
Avoid any site that uses jargon and catch phrases, “woke” “anti-woke”: “msm” or that exacerbates our differences.
Overly “angry” places where people go to get riled up are not conducive to being well-informed.

Also stay away from ones that over generalise, and use catch phrases like Radical Left, Socialist Left, Liberals, etc
Or ones that use nicknames for people.
And stay away from ones that avoid big headlines. Like if an ex president is indicted and that doesn't appear front row and centre on their news.

What exactly are you looking for in a news channel?

Do you want Information that is of use for you in your daily life, or rather see the bigger picture?
Factual reporting, entertainment or lots of opinions?
Do you want the news to have a bias or be presented even-handedly?
Do you want a focus on your local area, the USA or the entire world?

I have found the PBS NewsHour to be consistently excellent over the years, and I like the way they spend 10 or 15 minutes to cover a single story in depth instead of just flashing a headline and moving on.

Stay away from places that attempt to tell you their imagined motives behind what happened. Conspiracy theories abound in some of these places. Don't let them manipulate you. If you feel they are trying to push your buttons or play on your emotions, go somewhere else.
In the words of one MSNBC commentator:
"..., actually control exactly what people think - and that is our job."

And they do. They think it is their job to control what you think, and in doing so, control you.
Don't be a puppet.

I wouldn't bother with a news channel, unless you intend to become a 24-hour news junkie.

Read a respected 'local' paper with national coverage; in Illinois, maybe the Chicago Tribune

And like Ploverwing, I recommend a daily dose of the PBS Newshour for TV news.

The "main Stream" news outlets are like 90% political. I have found independent news to be far more interesting and informative ... you might check out
Redacted.inc (Clayton & Natali Morris).... they post (M-T) on Youtube and also Rumble ... you can subscribe for free or there is also a paid version. They also have a newsletter you can subscribe to and in it they provide links of their sources they are using for their various reportings.

Here is the youtube link:

By 'channel', I'm assuming you mean TV. I'd recommend a print or online source over TV. Ad Fontes has a media bias chart, which is constantly updated, which can give you a good idea of where a given source leans and how accurate it is. Left and right of center are self-explanatory, and the lower on the page, the less accurate it is. Note that WSJ is slightly right but reasonably accurate. Fox News (TV) is extreme right and inaccurate. CNN skews left and at the borderline level of reliability. Personally I subscribe to NYT, Wapo, WSJ, and I also read The Hill, Reuters, BBC, and AP.

The Hill is the one I tend to read the most...

1) because they tend to be more centrist and have a high reliability and accuracy score

2) because I may or may not have an extended family member in a key position there :smirk:

For what's going on with the Ukrainian/Russian war, and the possibility of it going nuclear, I like Canadian Prepper of Youtube.

He gathers news from multiple news sources from around the world (something I like to do), not the controlled narrative, along with the propaganda, that the Military Industrial Complex, benefits from, courtesy of Western consolidated media.

I would post his videos here, but they often contain a word or two of inapporopriate language.

NYP? Really? They get my vote for best outrageous headlines (Ike Turner's death announcement... :handok:), but news?

Agreed. In NY, it is mostly read for it's sports coverage and gossip Page Six (Donald was regularly featured there).

Overiously done by someone who is so far to the left, that even CNN and Newsweek appear to be center.

I'd recommend against listening to or reading any news. Despite what some are saying, there's no big difference. And even back in the days when the news wasn't almost all propaganda, it was a waste of time.
