  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What news channels do you recommend?

NYP? Really? They get my vote for best outrageous headlines (Ike Turner's death announcement... :handok:), but news?
Had to throw a bone to the right, NYP was the least Breitbart-y.

I'd recommend against listening to or reading any news. Despite what some are saying, there's no big difference. And even back in the days when the news wasn't almost all propaganda, it was a waste of time.
Agreed.
Back in the 1950s, after “the boys” had come home from WWII and the Korean War, news-media was rudimentary, not “profit-driven”, but done as a “loss-leader service” for clout and prestige.

As such, accurate and balanced reporting was paramount. And journalism was seen as “history being written in real-time”.

This continued until CNN came on the scene 40 odd years ago and the “fairness doctrine” was axed by the FCC under Reagan and finally FoxNews started up under Murdoch/Ailes and the marketing of “news” became a force unto itself.

I'm in the group that recommeds not watching news channels. They fall into more political entertainment than a real attempt to present news.

Understanding that bias exist, I read new sites everyday that move across the spectrum of political viewpoints. I avoid the ones bordering on absurd extreme views. The 4 I am reading currently are National Review, FoxNews, USA Today and CNN. One is conservative, one openly leans Republican, one tries to be neutral, and the other openly leans Democratic. That lets me catch viewpoints and talking points and also gives me a decent opportunity to figure out what may be the most likely truth.

And in very general terms…

There is not a cabal.
No-one is “in control”.
Soros funds policy-initiatives; same holds for the Koch people.

Mostly world news is driven by the jockeying about for position and to have money flow a certain way for certain people.

The USA is due to have an adjustment as to how capitalists are going to have to fund the society (which they are presently slowly strangulating) in which they grow.
There needs to be a redistribution of wealth, (this is government’s function), money goeth in at the very bottom.

Thank you for your opinion!
Peace.
It's not an opinion; it's a fact. CNN (TV) appears left of center and at the bottom end of reliable, as I explained in my first post. Newsweek appears slightly left of center, less reliable. It might help to enlarge the chart and check the axes along the left and top. The chart is updated regularly, and I've noticed certain media sources drifting left over the last few years, like AP. You'll notice Fox News Rundown is considered reliable, though skewing heavily right.

You may want to also dig into the interactiver version here, where you can drill down and see how certain ratings are justified. The whole page is a very worthwhile resource.

As a result of this thread, I've added themedialine.org to my reading. It focuses on the news in the Middle East, leaning center or slightly right with a high degree of accuracy.

Overiously done by someone who is so far to the left, that even CNN and Newsweek appear to be center.
Relative to the other sources listed, that's accurate. And what's left about Newsweek?

Additionally, there are two separate entries for CNN: TV and Web, with Web being listed closer to the center and TV almost "Strong Left", which seems accurate to me.

Folks get too hung up on the "reliable" metric because the chart is confusing. They have Fact Reporting, Analysis/Opinion, and Dishonest Propaganda all on the same continuum, which can lead to some wonky ratings when Source A has mostly solid analysis (e.g. the Atlantic, old Vox), while Source B has a mix of fact reporting and propaganda (e.g. Fox News).

Stay away from “video news”.
Read serious news outlets, WSJ, Al Jazeera, BBC, NYT, NYP, WP
Avoid any site that uses jargon and catch phrases, “woke” “anti-woke”: “msm” or that exacerbates our differences.
Overly “angry” places where people go to get riled up are not conducive to being well-informed.
I would add NPR to that list, either their website, app, podcasts, or the local radio station. They do an excellent job of being factual and condensed with neutral language.
