  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The kingdom of God is in the MIDST of you

Matthew 23:
26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
inside
ἐντὸς (entos)
Adverb
Strong's 1787: Within, inside, the inside. From en; inside.

Surprisingly this adverb appears only twice in the Bible. Outside of the Bible, ἐντός appears frequently (BDAG).

Greek Word Study Tool:
within, inside

Wiki agrees exactly:
within, inside

BDAG:
① pert. to a specific area inside someth., inside, within, within the limits of. ...
Lk preferring ἐντός in the sense among you, in your midst, either now or suddenly in the near future

② pert. to what is inside an area, content τὸ ἐ. τοῦ ποτηρίου the inside of the cup=what is in the cup

ESV Luke 17:
20 Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed, 21nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you [plural].”

I think the New King James Version provides a better translation:
nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”

The kingdom of God can be among us and inside each one of us. The Paraclete dwells in each one of us.

But then, ESV Luke 17:

Well, if the kingdom of God is in the midst of you people, then it is externally measurable.

New King James Version provides a better translation:

The kingdom of God is inside each one of us. The Paraclete dwells in each one of us.
Where else could a commitment to values be? Being a disciple involves not only believing in Jesus but also a conversion within and commitment to living and following..

That was not what Jesus was addressing. Jesus was stating that the kingdom of God is available and ready to be setup, all Israel needed to do was to believe Jesus was who He said He was. The promised Messiah from the prophecies of The Tankah. But the kingdom of God was not setup at the first advent as the nation rejected Jesus as The Messiah and committed the unpardonable sin (blasphemy of The Holy Spirit) see Matthew 12

Jesus could not be speaking about The Holy Spirit as the gift of The Holy Spirit had not yet been given.

So what are its possible meanings?

From Strongs
entos: within, among
Original Word: ἐντός
Part of Speech: Adverb
Transliteration: entos
Phonetic Spelling: (en-tos')
Definition: within, among
Usage: within, inside, the inside.

I would in this context, among fits the point Jesus is making, that Jesus came to offer Israel The Kingdom. Israel just had to believe Jesus was the promised Messiah.

Sure, I can accept this interpretation even though Strong's is a concordance and not a lexicon/dictionary. In any case, it does not exclude the possibility that the kingdom of God was within them at the same time. They can both be true.

STRONGS NT 1787: ἐντός
ἐντός, adverb ((from ἐν, opposed to ἐκτός), within, inside: with the genitive ἐντός ὑμῶν, within you, i. e. in the midst of you, Luke 17:21 (ἐντός αὐτῶν, Xenophon, an. 1, 10, 3 (but see the passage)

Was it the Pharisees Jesus was addressing? Luke 17:20, 21
There are quite a number of scriptural reasons why we know the kingdom of God being among or in the midst of the people, rather than being inside of them.

Good point. Jesus was also king of the kingdom. So the kingdom was among them, by means of its representative.

If the Pharisees, Jesus was addressing were not believers, then the kingdom could not be within them.

But also a believer is never to be said of being given the kingdom of God, when they become a believer. It is The Holy Spirit they receive.

Right, he enters it. John 3:5
Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.

How would you explain this in context?
Good question. I did so by interpreting it using first-order logic which allows both interpretations.

What other Scripture would you reference for the "within" interpretation?
Unfortunately, this Greek word only occurs twice in the NT listed in the OP.

Elaborate please.

How about close context - anything telling?

One of which supports the "within" interpretation as you've shown.

Also 5 times in the LXX, 4 of which seem to support "within" and 1 of which the "midst."

As I'm sure you know, it's not only by word usage in common, but also by other information we're given about the topic - in this case, for example, the Kingdom of God.

The word has two meanings. Both meanings make some sense and they are not contradictory according to FOL. So I take them both. I try to be accommodating when I interpret the Scripture.

The immediate context of the plural you favors "midst".

Also 5 times in the LXX, 4 of which seem to support "within" and 1 of which the "midst."
Great research! brother :)
