  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Repent & be baptized ISN'T the message for the Church today

Again, you won't answer my questions. Best wishes, JJ
Acts 8? There is NO mention of the HS in the baptism of the Ethiopian. There is no mention of the HS with the baptism of Lydia either. Now you have FOUR different ways to view what is normative in the Book of Acts.

YOU STILL HAVE NOT ANSWERED MY QUESTION: Why do you hold Acts 10 as normative and prescriptive, when all the other baptisms in acts are merely descriptive and non- normative. Please answer the question. AGAIN: WHY DO YOU BELIEVE ACTS 10 IS NORMATIVE. I will reply to your questions when you reply to this relatively simple questions. Otherwise I am done with this thread.

Ok, we can agree in Acts 8 there is no mention of when the H/S is given. That settles the Acts 8 debate.

You still haven't answered this question:

Do you agree or disagree with the OP. Is repent & be baptized to receive the Holy Spirit the message for today's Body of Christ?

I'll try to address your Acts 19 question when you've answer mine.

I am not off the hook. If I had lived my life fulfilling my earthly objective without sinning Christ would not have had to die for me.

But you do agree that you did not even exist as an entity at the time that Christ died?

So how can you sin when you did not even exist?

This has to do with "time" and God presence in time.
It has repeatedly been shown over the last 100 years and never disproven that time is relative, so I believe time is relative and very relative for God.
I see God being outside of time and not limited by time and God might have even created time for us.
God, in His existence at the end of time, would know historically all my free will choices I made throughout my life making them unchangeable (history cannot be changed [it happened]).
God at the end of time can send all that historical information back to Himself at the beginning of time, thus knowing what I did and for me, what I will do (and it is unchangeable).

You didn't answer the questions I asked you.

Do you agree or disagree with the OP. Is repent & be baptized to receive the Holy Spirit the message for today's Body of Christ?

And would you be king enough to tell us when the Acts 8 convert received the H/s?

I'll try to address this reply after you address mine.
1st, I don't identify as Baptist. I joined in 2019 & my profile reads Non-Denom. Having said that, Baptist (whomever) have as much market on interpretation of Scripture here, as you do.

I believe scripture does cite (clearly & repeatedly) the change from the All Jewish repent & be baptized message. Starting with John the Baptist; baptism of repentance message, to Israel only! Was repent from running away, return to & prepare/purify/withb water (Jewish ritual) yourselves to meet the Lord your God. There is no mention of the Holy Spirit (except his encounter)

John is imprisoned & Jesus picks up the repent torch. His message is repent from running away from, return to God, because the kingdom of God is near. The OP explains this all Jewish kingdom message.

Did John or Jesus say, Repent be baptized (in his/my name) & receive the Holy Spirit? NO!

Enter (all the confusion) Peter Acts 2, read the text He is preaching to Jews only, during a mandatory (any male over 20 ys) trip to Jerusalem, MILLIONS are their for the required Pentecost feast.

Now, the Lord has died & rose. The Holy Spirit has indwelt the 120 (no mention of any of them being water baptized 1st) Peter tells the Jews listening, that Jesus was Messiah & has risen (I've seen & spoke with Him) They are sorry & say what can we do? He tells them you (in unbelief) allowed Him to be killed. Repent from unbelief to BELIEF. In the fact, He was our long promised (to our fathers) Messiah/Redeemer/Son of God.

For the Jew (of the time) this next part was like signing a death pact.

Acts 2:38 Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

1st listed of the 10: Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Jewish leadership (Priesthood) rejected Jesus, confessing Him as Lord was see as idolatry. Look what happened to Stephen & later Paul, & later every apostle except John.

Way to many NT believers cite Acts 2:38 as the litmus test for receiving the Holy Spirit/Eternal Life/Salvation. And promote water baptism as a requirement. My position is, THEIR WRONG!

I presented the 1st sighting of the (from at the time an ALL Jewish presentation) change (Acts 10) The OP cited these 2 verses (Eph 2:8, Rom 5:1-2) that speak directly to the change.

The following present the change as well & none of these cited verses require water 1st to receive the Holy Spirit

Under the NT gospel of the GRACE of God (Acts 20:24) Jew & Gentile receive FOREVER/ETERNAL LIFE GIVING HOLY SPIRIT BY FAITH. NO H2O required!

Justification/ETERNAL LIFE = indwelling Holy Spirit < Proof you're FOREVER SAVED > (Eph 1:13-14, 4:30, 2 Cor 1:22, 5:5, 2 Tim 1:14, Jn 14:16) comes/is accessed through Faith!

Rom 3:28 Therefore """we conclude that a man is JUSTIFIED by FAITH without the deeds of the law""".

Rom 5:1 Therefore being JUSTIFIED by FAITH, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Rom 3:28 Therefore """we conclude that a man is JUSTIFIED by FAITH without the deeds of the law""".

Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be JUSTIFIED by FAITH.

Rom 3:30 Seeing it is one """God, which shall JUSTIFY the circumcision by FAITH, and uncircumcision through FAITH.

Rom 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that JUSTIFIETH the ungodly, his FAITH is counted for righteousness.

Gal 3:8 And the scripture, """foreseeing that God would JUSTIFY the heathen through FAITH""", preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

Gal 2:16 Knowing that a """MAN is NOT JUSTIFIED by the works of the law""", but by the FAITH of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be JUSTIFIED by the FAITH of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Faith is the conduit to ALL God's blessings!

Rom 3:25 """Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through FAITH in his blood""", to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God

Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
(MY NOTE: They HEARD, they BELIEVED the good news of Jesus sin atoning death & Jesus SEALED them with His ETERNAL LIFE giving Holy Spirit) No H2O required!

Eph 2:8 For by GRACE are ye SAVED through FAITH; and that not of yourselves: it is the GIFT of God:
(MY NOTE: By GRACE are you SAVED thru FAITH.) The GIFT you receive via FAITH is the LIVING WATER/CHRIST'/ETERNAL LIFE GIVING HOLY SPIRIT!

Rom 5:2 By whom also we have ACCESS by FAITH into this GRACE wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
(MY NOTE: we access God's GRACE/JSUS CHRIST/Titus 2:11 by FAITH). No H2O required!

Acts 15:9 And put no difference between us and them, """purifying their hearts by FAITH""".
(MY NOTE: It was God's GIFT of the HOLY SPIRIT that PURIFIED their hearts!) Not H2O

Rom 4:16 Therefore it is of FAITH, that it might be by GRACE; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the FAITH of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

(SIDE NOTE: The new covenant /testament is a partial fulfilment of God's unconditional promise to Abraham (Gen15). Cut 430 yrs (Gal 3:17) before before the Mosaic law covenant cut at Sinai. Scripture (more then once) declares Moses was a faithful servant over all God's house. Having said that, at the (Rev) marriage feast (the Lord hosts & serves at) it's Abraham sitting at the head of the table)

Gal 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by FAITH in Christ Jesus.

Acts 14:27 And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how """he had opened the door of FAITH unto the Gentiles""".

Acts 10 records dispensational message change. From the ALL JEWISH gospel of the kingdom promise. To the gospel of the GRACE of God.

The Lord thru Peter opens salvations door to gentiles!
Wrong.

Acts 10 is the fifth baptism in Acts. What about the second and third baptisms?

The Samaritans were apart of the second baptism recorded in Acts. They were nominally of Jewish descent but many were pagans. Many were considered gentiles with no Jewish descent either. And certainly no Jew in Palestine believed they were Jewish at all. And yet these gentiles/pagans were baptized and the HS was not present BEFORE their baptism. Acts 8:15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

The third baptism concerns the Ethiopian eunuch. He was a gentile/pagan also. And yet he was baptized with no mention how the HS worked.

Nope the gentile door was opened not by Peter but by Phillip as he was apart of the second and third baptism in Acts.

Why do you still hold Acts 10 as normative and prescriptive, when all the other baptisms in acts are merely descriptive and non-normative?

NO H2O required!
Are you saying Christian baptism is optional?

Read my post #25 reply to you. You'll find the answer there.
So you DO believe baptism is optional due to your quotation "No H20 required." This is my take on post #25.

So when Jesus instituted baptism in the Great Commission, was it a command or polite suggestion to "baptize" all nations?

Can you give me an example of an UNBAPTIZED christian in the NT?

The answers to your questions can be found between posts #1 & #25. That's far more then your replies have given me. On a question I asked you to answer 3 times.

You came to the thread criticizing the OP headline. Then made replies that supported it. I'll ask you again,

Do you agree or disagree with the OP. Is repent & be baptized to receive the Holy Spirit the message for today's Body of Christ?

You still have not answered the critical question here. Since you believe "baptism is optional" you are non responsive.

In spite of the fact, you wouldn't answer a simple. I gave you a comprehensive answer to yours. You still refuse to answer my question. I owe you nothing further.

You're free to believe whatever you choose, as am I. I'll waste no further time with you. May His grace be multiplied to you & yours, JJ.

In spite of the fact, you wouldn't answer a simple. I gave you a comprehensive answer to yours. You still refuse to answer my question.
Here it comes:
  • In the Book of Acts, Baptism and the giving of the Holy Spirit is so closely related, it can basically be seen as one act.
  • Luke uses stylistic formulation of four words to describe the relationship between Baptism and Holy Spirit: receive, gift, filled and promise.

The usual expression of the in the NT is by usage of three words Act 2:38-9 uses the first three terms “38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”

Receive:

  • 8:14-17 Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them that they would receive the Holy Spirit. 16 (For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit.
  • 10:47 47 “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?”
  • 19:2 He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “On the contrary, we have not even heard if there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Gift

  • 8:13, 18, 20 Now even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed signs and great miracles taking place, he was repeatedly amazed. But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could acquire the gift of God with money!
  • 10:45 All the Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had also been poured out on the Gentiles.
  • 11:17 Therefore, if God gave them the same gift as He also gave to us after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?”

Promise

  • 1:4-5 4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
  • 2:33 33 Therefore, since He has been exalted at the right hand of God, and has received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, He has poured out this which you both see and hear.
  • Luke 24:49 And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Filled

  • Acts 9:17 7 So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
The gift of the HS may come immediately before baptism (Cornelius, Acts 10) immediately after baptism (Acts 8 & 19) or during (Acts 2, 9:17).

The gift of the HS may come immediately before baptism (Cornelius, Acts 10) immediately after baptism (Acts 8 & 19) or during (Acts 2, 9:17).
Acts is a book recording the transition from OT law covenant, Jews only. To NT gospel of the GRACE of God (Acts 20:24).

From aprox 37 AD until the destruction of the Temple 70AD. There are 2 valid massages being preached. After the Temple is destroyed only Paul's message remains.

St Paul, the master builder (1 Cor 3:10) of the NT Church/Body of Christ (Both Jew & Gentile). Clearly & repeatedly states:

Justification/salvation/eternal life = the GIFT/baptism of Christ' Holy Spirit (Only Jesus has the authority). Are accessed by God's GRACE & FAITH placed in Jesus sin atoning death & resurrection.

The core message for the Church today. I. E. The gospel/good news of Jesus Christ is:

1 Cor 15:
1 Now brothers and sisters, let me remind you [once again] of the good news [of salvation] which I preached to you, which you welcomed and accepted and on which you stand [by faith].

2 By this faith you are saved [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose], if you hold firmly to the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain [just superficially and without complete commitment].

3 For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to [that which] the Scriptures [foretold],

4 and that He was buried, and that He was [bodily] raised on the third day according to [that which] the Scriptures [foretold],

PARSING:
Vs 1, ""The good news of SALVATION"" preached to you, ""which you accepted by FAITH"".

Vs 2, You were SAVED by FAITH & reborn from above, spiritually transformed, renewed & set apart for His purpose.

Vs 3, The most ""important"" SALVATION information needed is: (Vs 3) Christ died for our sins (Vs 4) was buried & He was raised on the 3rd day.

Synopsis: The gospel/good news for your SALVATION is: Christ died for your sins, was buried & rose on the 3rd. NO MENTION OF WATER!)

Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed "ye were sealed with that holy Spirit'' of promise
(PARSING: You heard & BELIEVED about Jesus sin atoning payment & resurrection. Then by Jesus (Matt 3:11, Mk 1:8, Lk 3:16), you were <PAST TENSE > SEALED with God's promised gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit. (Eph 1:13-14, 4:30, 2 Cor 1:22, 5:5, 2 Tim 1:14. NO MENTION OF WATER!)

Rom 10:
8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

(PARSING Confess Jesus BELIEVED He was Raised. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. NO MENTION OF WATER!)

Heb 9:22 In fact under the Law almost everything is cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness [neither release from sin and its guilt, nor cancellation of the merited punishment].
(MY NOTE: Repentance doesn't/can't remit/pardon sin. WATER BAPTISM doesn't/can't remit/pardon sin. Only FAITH in Jesus sin atoning death & resurrection. Can remove the sin stain from the soul.

Eph 2:8 For it is by grace [God’s remarkable compassion and favor drawing you to Christ] that you have been saved [actually delivered from judgment and given eternal life] through faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [not through your own effort], but it is the [undeserved, gracious] gift of God;
(MY NOTE: Salvation is accessed by GRACE thru FAITH. NO MENTION OF WATER!))

Rom 5:
1 Therefore, since we have been justified [that is, acquitted of sin, declared blameless before God] by faith, [let us grasp the fact that] we have peace with God [and the joy of reconciliation with Him] through our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed).

2 Through Him we also have access by faith into this [remarkable state of] grace in which we [firmly and safely and securely] stand. Let us rejoice in our hope and the confident assurance of [experiencing and enjoying] the glory of [our great] God [the manifestation of His excellence and power].
(MY NOTE: Vs 1, Justified/acquitted of sin & declared blameless before God by FAITH. Vs 2, We God's GRACE thru FAITH. NO MENTION OF WATER!)

Under the NT gospel of God's grace message. The believer hears/BELIEVES & bt FAITH (nothing more, nothing less) & Christ baptizes the believer with His ETERNAL LIFE/FOREVER (Jn 14:16) SALVATION SEALING (Eph 1:13-14, 4:30, 2 Cor 1:22, 5:5, 2 Tim 1:14) Holy Spirit!

The Act of getting water baptized (done after SALVATION/FINISHED TRANSACTION) is confirmation of your FAITH! A outwardly public statement of the inward spiritual change.

1 Cor 12:13For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
(MY NOTE: Translators capitalize Spirit showing deity. By Christ' Holy Spirit (NO WATER) you're baptized into one/His Body!

Col 2:11In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
(MY NOTE This New covenant Spiritual (Holy Spirit) circumcision. Is done without hands or WATER)

Deut 30:6 (A) 6And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart,

The book of Acts gives accounts of the ADMINISTRATION OF BAPTISM which of course is the usage of water.

Peter and Paul writings is about what baptism DOES. Your usage of I Cor 12 and Col. 2 is just foolish because you can not see this distinction.

The book of Acts gives accounts of the ADMINISTRATION OF BAPTISM which of course is the usage of water.

Peter and Paul writings is about what baptism DOES. Your usage of I Cor 12 and Col. 2 is just foolish because you can not see this distinction.
Ok, and your ignoring the text isn't foolish? BTW, I didn't write them.

1 Cor 12:13For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Col 2:11In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

There is no normative order of the Holy Spirit and baptism in the book of acts.

The gift of the HS may come immediately before baptism (Cornelius, Acts 10) immediately after baptism (Acts 8 & 19) or during baptism (Acts 2, 9:17).
Actually the Holy Spirit might not come for several days after baptism. In Acts 8 the people of Samaria didn’t receive the Holy Spirit after being baptized until the apostles came from Jerusalem and laid hands on them. It’s 35 miles from Jerusalem to Samaria.
