  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Saudi Arabia is developing this. A 100 mile long wall-city. They promise no cars and no carbon. Looks intriguing. Also looks like a surveillance nightmare gulag if you dont fit in just right - especially given that it answers to The Kingdom.

Why do you prefer highlighting China's failures over their successes?

Because it is a lot cheaper to learn from others' mistakes rather than repeating them on our own.

...I think I know why - because this isn't Joe Biden's idea, so therefore it must be likened to that which is bad.

Yet another post demonstrating that mind reading is difficult.
Please, let's try to stick to what I actually wrote rather than just making stuff up when obvious issues with Donald's ideas are shown. Is there some reason you can't just explain the details of how Donald's plan is designed to avoid the problems seen in other countries that tried this sort of thing?

Speaking of land, as yet unanswered is where all these vacant plots of government owned land with the resources for a city are hidden at.
There are some hints

The fact that these are all examples of corporate welfare rather than actual attempts to help the general population are just a coincidence, I'm sure.

I'd like to see reasons why a masterplanned city, built an a previously uninhabited area, is unlikely to take-off aside from claims that we "haven't seen it before"...
Is the problem what we "haven't seen it before", or that the thing we haven't seen is an actual plan concrete enough to actually discuss?

Sure, no problem I'd love to address that.

...The reason China has "ghost cities" is because they used more concrete in 3 years than the U.S. used in the entire 20th century. You see, they built so many new homes during 2009-2011, that they actually built too many. And that's why they have ghost cities - because the people have too many options, *unlike* the Americans here. Here in America, we have the ugly, old dilapidated houses selling for half a million dollars. We have *NOT* given enough choices. we are at the polar opposite of China, in regards to real estate... They've beaten us! Badly!

The following house is running for $475,000.00 in Northridge, CA.

...Would you rather buy this house for 475, or just relocate to somewhere else, entirely new, and start over? I would choose B... I would choose to relocate to a brand new city, and find a job just like the one I have now over there.

...I think what it is, is that people want other people to live in ugly dilapidated houses, and that's why they don't want to flood the market with new homes in new cities.

Please tell me why it feels good to watch other people live in squalor.

If you can and want to relocate do that. This property is priced for the land not the home. Someone will buy it and bring it up to the level of the neighborhood turning a nice profit.

People in this thread are addressing what the real issue is, the lack of affordable housing in existing cities. Just building new cities in the middle of the wilderness (that's where most federal land is), isn't going to address that.

Which gets back us back once again to the issue of where this land is to be found.
To the west, and to the east of St. George Utah, there are tracts of Federal land... It's a gorgeous area, if you haven't been there, and not too far from Vegas, Zion National Park and Flagstaff.

The federal lands surrounding St. George, Utah, in Washington County are gorgeous, with red rocks everywhere. There are rocky structures there, but also an abundance of flat land, ideal for roads and general construction.

Water is an issue in western states.
There's talk of a billion dollar water pipeline in the works for the St. George area, where growth will explode, naturally... Right next to that place, in the federal lands surrounding it, the government could offer up land for a new futuristic city with a booming downtown... It's *sure* to be a success.

And where are you going to get the water for that city?

That pipe is coming from the Colorado River. A river that is overused as it is right now. How is a new pipeline from the river that is already over pulled from as is going to make new water? Answer: it isn't. It is going to pull water that someone else will have to do without. Not a solution.

It sounds like the issue in Washington County is lack of water, not land for development.

I would suggest actually reading the article, and not just the opening sentence. It's hardly a sure success, for a multitude of reasons (costs, the Colorado River not having enough flow to support it, etc).

That and over-use of water. They use significantly more water per capita than pretty much every other major southwestern city, with no plans to change. This is driven, in part, by heavily-subsidized water rates.

Guess people just choose not to build there for no reason. Can’t be because of anything about the environment not being conducive to large cities.
