  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

LGBTQ hijack of Rainbow in opposition to "Proud to be Delivered"?

A friend of mine in Georgia belongs to a church that promotes "Proud to be Delivered" signs in this area.

Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, light Blue, Dark Blue, Purple

It points to a website of individual testimonies about the power of God to change lives and free from the bondage of rebellion and sin against God.

One of the churches promoting the "Proud to be Delivered" message is -
============================

I was told that an lgbtq group filed suit against the sign company and against the church - to stop them from using "their flag" - claiming that the rainbow in scripture has apparently been legally/successfully/in-perception-only highjacked by the lgbtq community and Christians are not allowed to use it to claim that the Gospel frees people from sin and rebellion.

All who desire to live Godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution - 2 Tim 3:12.

We expect Christians to be persecuted by GLAAD groups and others. And around the world various examples of opposing Christians can be seen..

I think a rainbow is a universal symbol that can't be claimed by any one group.
There are many gay friendly churches. I am friendly with someone who pastors one.
I think gay Christians seeking God would be better served by a church community that is less inflexible and hell-centered.

In the example above - the ad links to a site where former LGBTQ individuals accept the Gospel and discover the power of the Gospel to deliver from bondage.

Not everyone views that as a positive.

and it has six colors not the seven colored one in the add that refers to the Bible in Gen 8 and 9 - so then "God's flag" not LGBT's flag.

Only six? Red, orange, yellow, green, royal blue, purple, pink, light blue, brown, black, and white. That is definitely more than six colors.

God does not have a flag. If He did, you would see it in churches everywhere.

There is a Christian flag. At least there was when I went to Vacation Bible School over 50 years ago

That's the kind of church I go to (UCC, an "open and affirming" congregation) . I don't want to go to a church that is steeped in toxicity. There are folks from all sorts of backgrounds, denominations, and races at our church, and the pastor is a very caring old lady. We do alot of community ministries, like food pantries, or helping people access social services.

I just can't see Jesus bashing gay people, or holding their lives up for special scrutiny. And increasingly even alot of Evangelical scholars are starting to agree, like Tim Mackie.

I was wondering the other day how they ended up with the rainbow. It's always been a Christian symbol since Noah.

It became a symbol during the early 70's after the Stonewall riots and marches. A gay artist started using it as a symbol of the gay liberation movement, and it just caught on. The colors represent diversity and inclusion.

The rainbow has never been a particularly Christian symbol. Early Christians had a variety of symbols, usually a fish or the Chi-Rho symbol, later a cross.

Symbolism as in never flooding the earth again. It was God's first.

It's a folk story or legend. That doesn't give ownership of the rainbow to Christians. Rainbows appear as symbols in alot of cultures. For instance, the native Seediq people of Taiwan believed you crossed over to the afterlife on a rainbow bridge.

well one thing is for sure the actual rainbow has no "black" shining brightly in the sky nor does it have "white" or "brown".

Red, orange, yellow, green, royal blue, light blue?, purple, pink,

Gen 9 God started using the Rainbow.
The rainbow has never been a particularly Christian symbol.
until one reads what God says about it

"8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, 9 “Now behold, I Myself am establishing My covenant with you, and with your descendants after you; 10 and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the livestock, and every animal of the earth with you; of all that comes out of the ark, every animal of the earth. 11 I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall never again be eliminated by the waters of a flood, nor shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 God said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations; 13 I have set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall serve as a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth."

turns out! ;)

That long predates "some artist" in 1970's spray painting

I don't understand why the traditional interpretation of the story of Noah should be a controlling narrative for how we understand symbols like rainbows. I guess I don't subscribe to your biblical hermeneutics. IMO, even ancient people did not understand those "just so" stories in such a manner.

If a gay Christian was seeking God, they'd be willing to put away a flag that indicates pride in their sin.
