It seems only natural that the descendants of the Vikings, perhaps history’s greatest tough guys, would celebrate a food prepared with a caustic and highly dangerous substance. Lutefisk—codfish (fisk) preserved in lye (lut)—is both a delicacy and a tradition among Scandinavian-Americans, who serve the chemical-soaked, gelatinous fish with a warm and friendly smile. Lutefisk, or lutfisk in Swedish, is a traditional dish in Norway, Sweden, and parts of Finland.

But today, Scandinavians rarely eat lutefisk. Far more lutefisk is consumed in the United States, much of it in church and lodge basements. In fact, the self-proclaimed “lutefisk capital of the world” isn’t in Norway but in Madison, Minnesota
---------------

The plaintive question frequently asked of lutefisk lovers: “If it’s so good, why don’t you eat it more than once a year?”

“Lutefisk is the substance you love to hate,” writes Roy. “It’s a rich substance for jokes, and for these reasons, it holds an interesting spectrum of appeal that varies from the cherished to reviled.”

---------------

Despite its long history in Scandinavia, though, lutefisk has fallen out of favor now that few people need to preserve food to last all winter. In fact, the Norwegian national dish isn’t lutefisk or even fishbased; it’s farikal, a lamb and cabbage casserole.

According to what I read...
They soak it in lye. :sigh: which evidently isn't all that healthy.
Then rehydrate it cold water.

I might try it if I ever have the chance, but I certainly won't go out of my way.

I wonder if anyone from Madison Minnesota would chime in. :sorry:

My curiosity ... has increased.

I was in Walmart and I saw Gefilte fish and so I started wondering....
Gefilte could be pike or carp [or whitefish] ewwww on the pike, carp etc, and it's sweet and so I was wondering about Lutefisk.

Pictures of gefilte fish don't seem...um like fish.

I’d be more likely to try that than Lutefisk.

They sell it at Walmart.
4th ingredient is sugar. I would try it, but I would need a very small jar for doing that. I only saw some large jars.

I was reading up on it and it basically a variation of ground up fish. It’s supposed to taste pretty plain.

What I read about Lutefisk:

Imagine eating jello or thick jelly that smells like rotten fish. It's the most intensely fishy smelling substance in the universe, and once you smell it, it is absolutely unforgettable. If you dislike fish or seafood in general because of that fishy smell or flavor, lutefisk will literally gag you.

I did read that they now use something to tone down the 'rotten' fish smell. lol
At least now it's not like the 'good ol days' lol

There are a lot of smells that are pretty nasty-----I don't think I'd need to add lutefisk to them. :(

Swamp gas is bad; so is burning limbourger cheese. Pig manure is decidedly foul, as is any odor of vomit.

The absolute limit, however----the most completely horrible thing you could ever have the misfortune to smell, is decaying human flesh. That is the ultimate in my opinion.....once you smell that, believe me, you never forget it.

Smelling a decaying dead animal is awful as well.

Yes. But decaying dead humans are worse. Much, much worse. Trust me.
I do. I smelled decay on some patients in the nursing home so bad I was gagging. Problem was they were still living. I can only imagine what you smelled. I started putting Vick’s vapor rub under my nose when I entered.

Two bars of Safegard soap wrapped up in a G.I. towel and tied around my neck. If it got too bad, I would lift the towel and breathe through soap for a while. :(

Ugh! I know it’s something that never leaves anyone that has experienced that.
