Florida Teacher Is Fired for Posting Viral Video of Empty Classroom Bookshelves

Brian Covey, a substitute teacher in Jacksonville, Florida, was fired this weekfor posting a video showing rows of empty bookshelves in his classroom in late January, which several local teachers did after schools in the Florida’s Manatee and Duval counties received a directive to “remove or cover all classroom libraries until all materials can be reviewed.”

"it was determined that he had violated social media and cell phobne policies of his employer"
I guess he shouldn't have done that then. He violated school policy.

Well? Did he?

Edit- Wow, an article on Jezebel. The website known for informational topics like "all sex is rape" and "all men are abusers". Apparently, Jezebel is involved in crafting left wing political rhetoric these days....yet no one on the left thinks they've shifted to the far left at all.

'We're going to be viewpoint-neutral by banning certain viewpoints.'

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, a right-of-center First Amendment group that argued for White nationalist Richard Spencer’s right to speak on a Florida campus, has joined DeSantis in opposing diversity, equity, and inclusion, or DEI, programs. Nevertheless, the group has repeatedly criticized Florida’s heavy-handed approach to forcing conservative beliefs on universities and is suing the state over the Stop WOKE Act, a DeSantis-backed measure that legislated how professors teach certain topics.

“You cannot censor your way to freedom of expression,” said Will Creeley, FIRE’s legal director. “You cannot trade one orthodoxy for another. What we’ve seen recently in Florida is a troubling willingness to do just that.”

If that were the ONLY you might have a point. That is far from the case:

Covey admitted that it was “not in my list of goals this week to announce that I was fired,” saying he mostly tweets about the National Football League’s Jacksonville Jaguars.

I have a simple question. If the the teachers are coming with the rules and laws of the state, why would they need to cover up their books? Are they trying to hide something?
Have you considered the option that the law is bad?

No, it do any appear to be bad to me. What would make it bad?
Which law? The one that says no books that are not approved by the party are permitted or the one that says showing empty shelves is not permitted?

Yes, we know, “who says what” is more important than “what was said”.

Isn't that generally how you see it now?

I believe that was the rationale behind scrubbing that Buffalo shooter's manifesto from the interwebs. I've had all sorts of folks on the left tell me that as a straight white male, my opinions don't matter on multiple issues.

I could go on but I'm sure you get the point.

I actually don't care that it's from Jezebel. That's not a reason why it's a matter of interest to me. You have posters on this forum who balk at anything Fox News reports about simply because it's in Fox News.

That's not a good comparison for Jezebel. A good comparison would be if "Stormfront" the old white supremacist website started reporting on the news....and people on the right started linking it as a source.

That would be bizarre right? It would be as if the nutballs weren't merely running the asylum....but also reporting the news on how the nutballs took over the asylum.

Take your pick...

Clearly everyone draws a line somewhere. If I were to defend an elementary school wanting to put issues of Hustler magazine on school shelves....I'd hope you would have a problem with that. If you can't understand that children aren't ready to be exposed to certain materials...I can probably find some research on the topic for you....

As for the second "law"....trashing your employers on social media by promoting some bogus political agenda can get you fired?

Really?!?

Stop the presses. The public needs to hear about this. This is a front page story....and the weather report should also include these inane and obvious facts like "the rain is wet". I think we're on the cutting edge of things everyone already knows.

There's only one law being discussed here. Is there a different one that I am not aware of in regards to showing empty shelves on social media? I thought that was a policy and not a law.

Child inappropriate content possession is a felony in every state, as is contributing to the delinquency of a minor.(Not sure why but it is correcting p o r n to something else)
Yes but the laws may not apply to certain things so a new one has to be written. Happens all the time. That's how legislation is done.

Honestly, only in America can you look at a classroom with no books in it and think "Well, whatever law that created that scenario replicating throughout classrooms in that state is intelligent and reasonable law".

Yeesh.

Christians in America could realize a greater way of bringing people to God that forcing their own personal priorities on others. But again, I have a feeling it's more just about exerting their own power over others. But I think they want to do THAT because they believe the people that they fear are trying to indoctrinate them into such damnable lies as "hey it's not your business, just relax and let them exist" all the way to "Tulsa Riots are worth knowing about".

You understand those books are coming back, right?

You mean the way the left does in schools?

It's not your business....by the way, these are the new pronouns we invented this week....use them or you're a bigot.

all the way to "Tulsa Riots are worth knowing about".

Tulsa Riots?

Are you one of those people who still think CRT is teaching about the Tulsa Riots?

Meanwhile, in Florida higher education.

A new bill overhauling Florida universities to match Gov. Ron DeSantis’ vision for higher education would shift power at state schools into the hands of the Republican leader’s political appointees and ban gender studies as a field of study.

The legislation, filed this week, would also require that general education courses at state colleges and universities “promote the values necessary to preserve the constitutional republic” and cannot define American history “as contrary to the creation of a new nation based on universal principles stated in the Declaration of Independence.” It would prohibit general courses “with a curriculum based on unproven, theoretical or exploratory content.”

Thank heavens Christianity, natural rights and capitalism will finally be removed from the state indoctrination centers.
