  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Who really is incoming Congressman George Santos (R-NY), anyway? His biography appears to be fictional. Now charged by feds.

"I am not a criminal". Actually, you are. Lying on your resume is fraud by misrepresentation. Not to mention he likely lied to multiple federal departments.
There is also the question of where he got his money. Per Forbes, "Also under scrutiny is the source of his finances. Santos loaned his campaign $700,000 and reported a salary of over $750,0000, according to the Times. In the same video interview with City & State, Santos asserted his consulting agency, Devolder Organization, started after he left his job at Harbor City Capital — alleged by the Securities and Exchange Commission as a Ponzi scheme —- saying “I had the relationships and I started making a lot of money” explaining no further and assuring agency was above board."

So a self-admitted liar is going to take the Oath of Office?

Is this where we are now?
Been there quite some time.

He's going to fit right in.

I see great things ahead for him in congress.

Question: Is there any way for congress to kick someone out?

EDIT: Like a dolt, I find the answer just after asking. It is possible to kick someone out of the House if 2/3 of the house agrees, though it's only happened five times in US history.

Yes, but I would be shocked if that happens.

He's in like Flynn, now let the real grift begin.

Just to give you an idea of how hard it it to kick someone out of Congress: in the 1850s, Representative Preston Brooks nearly beat Senator Charles Sumner to death with a cane on the Senate floor and the House was unable to get 2/3 majority to remove Brooks.

He was also mailed canes with notes to finish the job.

This could’ve happened on the left as well. We are not immune to being fooled.

...if you're referring to what was known prior to the election....one might ask why the Democrats didn't do their homework on Santos. IMO, the Republican Party probably knew....and ran him anyway. But where where was the oppostion?

I don’t know that the Republican Party knew or bothered to look into it - although a local paper had run an expose. The Democrats should have done a better job but it is possible that that district didn’t have a good candidate of their own. I don’t know.

The lies are egregious, so egregious as to be hilarious.

The [Nassau County] district attorney, Anne T. Donnelly (R), said in a statement: “The numerous fabrications and inconsistencies associated” with Santos “are nothing short of stunning.” The residents in the congressional district “must have an honest and accountable representative in Congress” and “if a crime was committed in this county, we will prosecute it.” Donnelly’s spokesman, Brendan Brosh, said in a statement, “We are looking into the matter.”

It will be interesting to see if there are crimes that a prosecutor thinks worth pursuing. There may be some signed forms with 'inaccuracies' great enough to look into, and maybe something with campaign finance, with the money coming from Intrater. But I don't think his lies in his campaign materials and appearances, no matter how ludicrous and self-serving, are criminal in nature. IANAL.

The Nassau County DA (a Republican) has opened up an investigation into Santos. In the meantime, I am absolutely horrified. The 3rd Congressional District of NY has been held by Democrats for years, including one of my favorites, Carolyn McCarthy, whose husband was killed and son wounded by the LIRR shooter and who was a champion of sensible gun regulation during her whole tenure.
But I lived in that district for 16 years, and I can't my imagine my neighbors being hoodwinked by this guy. He ran against the incumbent (who retired) in 2020 and lost 66%-33%...so he must have been vetted.
It is disappointing to see Long Island fall into conservatism. I know they are blindsided by high property taxes and the cost of living, and even though they earn more I don't think it makes up the difference. Although I have lived in far more spacious homes with far more property than our now 93 year-old first house--1300 square feet on a 45X100 lot--none of them would currently sell for the $800,000 that house would, and the property taxes would never be $11,000.
I don't think Long Island is an ideal place for senior citizens on fixed incomes--even when those fixed incomes are good. The traffic. The crowds. The lines in the supermarkets and everywhere else. Going into a hospital and being in a tiny enclosure in the ER hall for 3 days! I can do everything I want to in a place like NY in a two week visit a year.
But to scrape the bottom of the barrel voting for someone like Santos? I just can't believe it of the people I know there.
