Things change as we get older, things we used to do as a much younger self are now becoming a challenge.

But is it only due to our aging bodies?

Recently I've noticed a bone spur on my knuckle on the finger that was jammed back when I was 11 playing outfield in a school softball game... without a glove. Ball hit me straight on my two longest fingers. Bent one up at the first knuckle and turning in the other finger in an odd way.

Noticed this as I was trying to remove the cap from the creamer for my coffee.

I used to not have much struggle opening things but I'm thinking back for the past 6 months maybe and realize it may not just be me.

I looked at the twist off cap, the one you open before the tamper resistant finger pull seal.

Now I don't think it's just me having trouble with this but that the manufacturer of these cardboard liquid containers (milk, creamer, OJ, eggnog and the like) are making the cap smaller. Not in diameter but in thickness. It's hard to grasp onto. I suppose it's a environmental thing but I wonder if they've even considered how it accepts the consumer. Not just the elderly but also others that are impaired of their fine motor skills?

Same...

My days of paying classical guitar are long past

Getting caps off is no where near as fast

But hey - I can walk 5 kM a day...

... and still bring my wife breakfast on a tray.

Still my mind is clear in His hand

My memory though runs away like sand.

Cant wait for the new body and soul.

leaving this earthly tent and finally being whole.

But meantime there is work to do

Bringing Jesus to folks like you...

Hearing gentle nudges about the fruitful way

and thanking Him for the joy of every day.

I have the same problem. I used to have all kinds of strength in my fingers, but not any more. I recommend a cap/lid opening tool (look in the kitchen section of your local dept store). They usually have multiple sizes on the one tool, to fit various caps and lids. It works great, just slip it on, squeeze and turn.

Maybe I need to invest in those hand exercisers. I used to be able to squeeze them like they were nothing.

When we were kids, at least the older ones among us, they didn't have all the child safety precautions which they have now so opening things was easier. It's good that they were introduced but I think that they were always a bit difficult for the elderly, and now that I'm elderly I find getting lids off jars harder too. I also get tired more easily but am thankful that I can still exercise although I've shortened the exercise sessions a bit.

The main thing I find is forgetfulness. I can remember some things - I've surprised neighbours by recounting conversations we've had and who was there and what was discussed, but I can't remember why I've just put the kettle on or what day it is.

A little inspiration go to 4:10 time mark Larry Lewis.

I remember watching him when I was growing up. Avg. monthly rent was $125/mo in 1967 when this show started.

I've got all kinds, including one from the 50's, also a Mason jar gripper, but the drink caps leave no room for your fingers, let along a helper device. :sigh:

Used to be like this

My fun thing is getting up and walking to another room to get something, get there and forgot why I went in there! :swoon::sigh:
Then I usually have to retrace my steps and look around and try to remember what I went in there for in the first place. Good to get exercise but not so good on the frustration level. :)

My 2 friends and I had an apartment for $99/mo. It wasn't bad either. But when my husband and I left the area, house rent was $1,000.

I can't hear my cell phone when it rings unless I'm still holding it. Then I can't hear the caller talking to me.

I have something on my iPhone that transcribes voicemail messages for me to read. That way I do not have to listen to many spam voicemails.

They have technology to transcribe phone calls to text while you are on the phone. It is good for people with hearing loss.

There is also an app called Rev that is supposed to do this.

I found these rubber gripper jar opener things incredibly helpful. I can open jars now that I hadn't been able to open for years before:
