In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Have you ever been able to find the Gospel in the same passage?
Brother, yes! I find the Gospel in the first and last paragraph of the message of Hebrews 3 and 4, where it speaks of Jesus as our High Priest. Clearly, this message is for those in the new covenant and the message asks us to keep the original Sabbath, rescued from the human tradition of Judaism since Joshua.

Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. (Hebrews 4:8 NLT)
Are you working to save yourself by keeping a Sabbath day, or are you resting in what Christ did on the cross of Calvary?
The law cannot save me from past sins! Only Jesus' daily forgiveness as our High Priest can allow me to grow in obedience to His Eleven Commandments in the new covenant with the additional Eleventh commandment to "follow" His example, not possible before Jesus.

Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: “Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “Only God is truly good. But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother.’” The man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” When Jesus heard his answer, he said, “There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Luke 18:18-22 NLT)
Which one is the Gospel?
The Gospel of Jesus as our High Priest in heaven is found in the first and last paragraph of the message of Hebrews 3 and 4. The "good news" heard before David, which is not the Gospel of Jesus, is that God has "prepared" a "rest" for us to enter since the creation of the world. The "rest" that Jesus wants us to enter into in the new covenant is found in the message of Hebrews 3 and 4 that was mistranslated due to a misidentification of Joshua as Jesus before David in the King James bible.

For this GOOD NEWS (not the Gospel)—that God has prepared this rest—has been announced to us just as it was to them. But it did them no good because they didn’t share the faith of those who listened to God. For only we who believe can enter his rest. As for the others, God said, “In my anger I took an oath: ‘They will never enter my place of rest,’” even though this rest has been ready since he made the world. We know it is ready because of the place in the Scriptures where it mentions the seventh day: “On the seventh day God rested from all his work.” (Hebrews 4:2-4 NLT)

Do you notice anything about several of the translations found below?

The 4th commandment was given at Mount Sinai during the time of Moses, before Joshua became the leader of the children of Israel.

This verse is speaking about a time period which followed the time of Joshua.

Commentary from Albert Barnes:

Hebrews 4:8
For if Jesus - Margin, “That is, Joshua.” The Syriac renders it, “Joshua the son of Nun.” “Jesus” is the Greek mode of writing “Joshua,” and there can be no doubt that Joshua is here intended. The object is to prove that Joshua did” not” give the people of God such a rest as to make it improper to speak of a “rest” after that time. “If Joshua had given them a complete and final rest; if by his conducting them to the promised land all had been done which had been contemplated by the promise, then it would not have been alluded to again, as it was in the time of David.” Joshua “did” give them a rest in the promised land; but it was not all which was intended, and it did not exclude the promise of another and more important rest.
Then would he not - Then “God” would not have spoken of another time when that rest could be obtained. The “other day” here referred to is that which is mentioned before by the phrase “today,” and refers to the time in which it is spoken of long after Joshua, to wit, in the time of David.

Brother, yes! What will replace the human tradition of Judaism is a "day" and not some invented human idea other than a "day".

The 4th commandment was given at Mount Sinai during the time of Moses, before Joshua became the leader of the children of Israel.
Joshua was among them who first heard the "good news" (not the Gospel of Jesus before David) of God having prepared this "rest" since the creation of the word. Joshua experienced the punishment of God by not allowing them to enter the Sabbath for 40 years with Manna before arriving in the Promised Land. God forced them to keep the seventh day of the week with Manna, right in Eden but not near the Promised Land. Then, when they changed to a time before the seventh day of the week, Joshua mistakenly assumed this different Sabbath in the Promised Land was the seventh day of the week when God had taught them for 40 years that the seventh day of the week does not enter the Sabbath near the Promised Land.

Brother, the message below tells us that during the "forty years" they kept the seventh day of the week from morning to morning with Manna near the Promised Land, those "whose corpses lay in the wilderness" "were not able to enter" the Sabbath by "oath", that Joshua later entered at an earlier time in the Promised Land from evening to evening than the seventh day of the week from morning to morning with Manna.

And who was it who rebelled against God, even though they heard his voice? Wasn’t it the people Moses led out of Egypt? And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it the people who sinned, whose corpses lay in the wilderness? And to whom was God speaking when he took an oath that they would never enter his rest? Wasn’t it the people who disobeyed him? So we see that because of their unbelief they were not able to enter his rest. (Hebrews 3:16-19 NLT)

Here is the evidence that the Manna days were from morning to morning. The quail for a month is key to understand the beginning and the end of the seventh day of the week for 40 years with Manna before reaching the Promised Land.

“And say to the people, ‘Purify yourselves, for tomorrow you will have meat to eat. You were whining, and the LORD heard you when you cried, “Oh, for some meat! We were better off in Egypt!” Now the LORD will give you meat, and you will have to eat it. And it won’t be for just a day or two, or for five or ten or even twenty. You will eat it for a whole month until you gag and are sick of it. For you have rejected the LORD, who is here among you, and you have whined to him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’” (Numbers 11:18-20 NLT)

Divided is "tomorrow" from "today" on the "morning" of the seventh day, when they go out for Manna and not quail, because they learn from Manna not to go out for quail that night, having to stay without gathering food that day. They tested the Lord on the first food of the seventh day by going out for Manna and not for quail because they learned their lesson with Manna on the morning before the first night without quail. Clearly, divided is "tomorrow" from "today" in the morning, by not testing God again with quail as the second food of the seventh day during the first month.

That evening vast numbers of quail flew in and covered the camp. And the next morning the area around the camp was wet with dew. When the dew evaporated, a flaky substance as fine as frost blanketed the ground. The Israelites were puzzled when they saw it. “What is it?” they asked each other. They had no idea what it was… On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much as usual—four quarts for each person instead of two. Then all the leaders of the community came and asked Moses for an explanation. He told them, “This is what the LORD commanded: TOMORROW will be a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath day set apart for the LORD. So bake or boil as much as you want TODAY, and set aside what is left for TOMORROW.” So they put some aside until morning, just as Moses had commanded. And in the morning the leftover food was wholesome and good, without maggots or odor. Moses said, “Eat this food TODAY, for today is a Sabbath day dedicated to the LORD. There will be no food on the ground today. You may gather the food for six days, but the seventh day is the Sabbath. There will be no food on the ground that day.” (Exodus 16:13-15, 22-26 NLT)

Notice that they disobey over Manna and not quail, separating “tomorrow” from “today” on the Manna above, because the first thing they can’t gather on the seventh day is the Manna before they can’t go out that night to gather quail on the seventh day.

Some of the people went out anyway on the seventh day, but they found no food. The LORD asked Moses, “How long will these people refuse to obey my commands and instructions? They must realize that the Sabbath is the LORD’s gift to you. That is why he gives you a two-day supply on the sixth day, so there will be enough for two days. On the Sabbath day you must each stay in your place. Do not go out to pick up food on the seventh day.” So the people did not gather any food on the seventh day. (Exodus 16:27-30 NLT)

Do you stay at home on the Sabbath day?
Brother, no! The Eleventh Commandment instructs me to "follow" the example of Jesus and He did not stay in His place on the Sabbath. The instruction must have been specific to the time in the desert with Manna, when there was no food to be found on the Sabbath: neither Manna nor quail.

Some of the people went out anyway on the seventh day, but they found no food. (Exodus 16:27 NLT)

It there a limit on how far you travel on the Sabbath day, as we find in the New Testament?

Act_1:12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.

Do you work on the Sabbath day, like Jesus did?

Joh 5:16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
Joh 5:17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

Yes! I work for God on the Sabbath but not for myself, since Jesus would have stopped working as a carpenter but healed on the Sabbath.

“Keep the Sabbath day holy. Don’t pursue your own interests on that day, but enjoy the Sabbath and speak of it with delight as the LORD’s holy day. Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day, and don’t follow your own desires or talk idly. Then the LORD will be your delight. I will give you great honor and satisfy you with the inheritance I promised to your ancestor Jacob. I, the LORD, have spoken!” (Isaiah 58:13-14 NLT)

How do you know there was not a limit on how far a person could travel on the Sabbath day in the Old Testament?

Act 1:12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.

Albert Barnes commentary:

Acts 1:12

Then returned they unto Jerusalem - In Luk_24:52, we are told that they worshipped Jesus before they returned, and it is probable that the act of worship to which he refers was what is mentioned in this chapter their gazing intently on their departing Lord.
From the mount called Olivet - From the Mount of Olives. See the notes on Mat_21:1. The part of the mountain from which he ascended was the eastern declivity, where stood the little village of Bethany, Luk_24:50.
A sabbath-day’s journey - As far as might be lawfully traveled by a Jew on the Sabbath. This was 2,000 paces or cubits, or seven furlongs and a half - not quite one mile. See the notes On Mat_24:20. The distance of a lawful journey on the Sabbath was not fixed by the laws of Moses, but the Jewish teachers had fixed it at 2,000 paces. This measure was determined on because it was a tradition that in the camp of the Israelites, when coming from Egypt, no part of the camp was more than 2000 paces from the tabernacle, and over this space, therefore, they were permitted to travel for worship. Perhaps, also, some countenance was given to this from the fact that this was the extent of the suburbs of the Levitical cities, Num_35:5. Mount Olivet was only 5 furlongs from Jerusalem, and Bethany was 15 furlongs. But on the eastern declivity of the mountain the tract of country was called, for a considerable space, the region of Bethany; and it was from this place that the Lord Jesus ascended.

Brother, there was a limit based on a human law of Judaism but this law did not come from God. This law is an example of what Paul called "made perfect by the flesh", referring to human laws in Judaism added to God's laws by "blind" guides that enslave you to the law instead of helping you separate yourself from sin because they are "blind" guides. Humans are "blind" guides to add laws to Judaism, making their converts "into twice the child of hell you yourselves are". God can add to His own laws because He is not a blind guide like humans are. Judaism does not enter the kingdom of heaven, nor will they allow others to enter, do to their own system of law. Their human laws enslave people instead of freeing them from sin because they are "blind" guides.

“What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either. “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you cross land and sea to make one convert, and then you turn that person into twice the child of hell you yourselves are! “Blind guides! What sorrow awaits you! For you say that it means nothing to swear ‘by God’s Temple,’ but that it is binding to swear ‘by the gold in the Temple.’ Blind fools! Which is more important—the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred? And you say that to swear ‘by the altar’ is not binding, but to swear ‘by the gifts on the altar’ is binding. How blind! For which is more important—the gift on the altar or the altar that makes the gift sacred? When you swear ‘by the altar,’ you are swearing by it and by everything on it. And when you swear ‘by the Temple,’ you are swearing by it and by God, who lives in it. And when you swear ‘by heaven,’ you are swearing by the throne of God and by God, who sits on the throne. Brother, happy Sabbath! The immediate context in the sentence just prior is about "work". I am willing to drive my car for God, but not for myself on the Sabbath. I would drive my neighbor who has his car in the auto repair shop to church on the Sabbath.

Then Moses called together the whole community of Israel and told them, “These are the instructions the LORD has commanded you to follow. You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day must be a Sabbath day of complete rest, a holy day dedicated to the LORD. Anyone who works on that day must be put to death. You must not even light a fire in any of your homes on the Sabbath.” (Exodus 35:1-3 NLT)

If your neighbor's car is not electric, you would be kindling a fire on the Sabbath day.

Brother, happy Sabbath! I would not kindle a fire in my fireplace on the Sabbath, but I will use my car to do good on the Sabbath. Kindling is something between the size of tinder and wood in the process of starting a fire in a wood fireplace.

Kindling tends to be the material used to let larger wood really catch, while tinder is small shavings or shreds of material that will burn hot quickly and starts the kindling burning. Kindling is larger than tinder. (wikihow.com)

The reason I will not take it to an extreme beyond my fireplace to my car is because of Jesus' guiding principle in Matthew 9:13 and 12:7.

I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings. (Hosea 6:6 NLT)

Brother, happy Sabbath! I would not kindle a fire in my fireplace on the Sabbath, but I will use my car to do good on the Sabbath. Kindling is something between the size of tinder and wood in the process of starting a fire in a wood fireplace.

Exodus 35:3

Kindle is a verb in this verse, instead of a noun.

(CSB) Do not light a fire in any of your homes on the Sabbath day.”

(ESV) You shall kindle no fire in all your dwelling places on the Sabbath day.”

(ESV+) R4You shall kindle no fire in all your dwelling places on the Sabbath day.”

(Geneva) Ye shall kindle no fire throughout all your habitations vpon the Sabbath day.

(GW) Never light a fire in any of your homes on this day of worship."

(HCSB) Do not light a fire in any of your homes on the Sabbath day."

(KJV) Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.

(KJV+) Ye shall kindleH1197 noH3808 fireH784 throughoutH3605 your habitationsH4186 upon the sabbathH7676 day.H3117

(NKJV) You shall kindle no fire throughout your dwellings on the Sabbath day."

(NLT) You must not even light a fire in any of your homes on the Sabbath.”

(YLT) ye do not burn a fire in any of your dwellings on the sabbath-day.'

If you believe it is OK to start a fire in your car's engine, do you get to decide what the commandment actually means?

I heat my home with wood in the winter, so I am well aware of what kindling is.

Brother, no! I can't decide what the commandment really means arbitrarily. God tells us what He means in His word, guaranteed through the prophets. Before the convenience of a lighter or a match, it took "work" to light a fire. It is in this context of "work" that we find the statement in question in the word of God.

In God's word, work is tied to who you're doing it for: whether you are working for God or for yourself. Jesus would have stopped doing carpentry on the Sabbath, but He healed people on the Sabbath. Jesus tells us next the law allows good works on the Sabbath.

And he answered, “If you had a sheep that fell into a well on the Sabbath, wouldn’t you work to pull it out? Of course you would. And how much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Yes, the law permits a person to do good on the Sabbath.” (Matthew 12:11-12 NLT)

How is it possible what Jesus tells us above in the commandment below? One way to see this in the commandment is that God is not a part of our household! Jesus resided in the earthly temple prior to His incarnation and death. The earthly temple "copy" was a stand-in for the true temple in heaven where He daily forgives our sins from heaven after His death. We can work for God who is not part of our household. In fact, no household could contain Him.

“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you. For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy. (Exodus 20:8-11 NLT)

The sabbath is a day off, a day of rest. It was unknown in the ancient world for 99.99% of the people, including the ancient Hebrews.

Unfortunately, many people turn it into a version of the LAW, i.e., you must rest, defeating the whole purpose. Jesus clearly showed in His behavior and explanation of David's behavior that it is not an iron-clad rule.

Brother, the Sabbath is still unknown to most Christians. People who reject God's evidence of weekdays from morning to morning, because it has been assumed since Joshua that a Sabbath in the Promised Land is a weekday, when it falls between two weekdays. The Sabbath In the Promised Land falls before the seventh day of the week, because it is remembered in the time zone of creation. A human tradition since Joshua corrected in Hebrews 3 and 4.

Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. (Hebrews 4:8 NLT)

God has been so patient with our human traditions about the Sabbath, because it was made for us and we were not created for the Sabbath. It is a blessing that we have yet to fully benefit from. The story of the Sabbath has given me confidence in God's word, as unaltered by humans. God has preserved the truth about the Sabbath from the beginning, despite the misunderstanding of all humans prior to our time, to give us confidence in His word in these last days.

Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath. (Mark 2:27 NLT)

Hi Gorge, I wonder why some are so fixated on the old covenant Sabbath that was given only to Israel that it becomes their main topic? Why is it we all are not writing about what Jesus did for all of humanity and what He wants us to do to for all humanity. Jesus never told one soul to keep the Sabbath. He never rebuked one soul for not observing the Sabbath. Jesus' apostles didn't teach Sabbath keeping to the gentiles. Jesus is all about love. He healed the sick, made the lame to walk again and even raised the dead and His greatest act of love is when He allowed Himself to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. Love, not Sabbath, is the great theme of the Bible. Not keeping the Sabbath will not keep anyone from eternal life, but not loving as Jesus taught us certainly will.

Worship corporately and day you deem appropriate and allow those who worship corporately at some other time the same privilege. That is really an act of love.
