  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Has the Holy Spirit explicitly led you to keep the Sabbath?

It was a great many animals of various types and as you know, the exact details are not given. Nothing in the fish category is listed. In contrasting the Acts 10:14 across multiple translations, the animals consisted of those categorized as common and those categorized as unclean. The point the Lord is making is obvious and is bolstered when you see Peter's response to the vision and the Lord's response to Peter. And this vision was repeated 3 times!
And yet God’s response is notable. He said, “What I have cleanse call thou not common”
Not once mentioning the unclean, just the common.

The sheet of animals in Acts 10:14 containing both the unclean and the common are now declared clean by the Lord's edict.

The Acts 10:15 "What I have cleaned call thou not common" means don't even taint the now clean with the middle ground "common" term.

God is not confused and does not make gaffs like men, who say one thing, and then in the next sentence qualify it to completely change its meaning. Acts 10:15 is correcting Peter. The fact that God does not repeat all the Acts 10:14 terms in the correction does not mean that He is contradicting what He said and did in Acts 10:14.

Once again you asserting things that are not there.
Peter makes a distinction between the unclean animals and the common in verse 14
Then God says to Peter, what God has cleansed call thou not common. No mention about the unclean animals only the common. Don’t assume or assert what is not there. It is not a thus saith you or I. It is the Word of God.
Take care
Acts 10:14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
Acts 10:15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

Acts 10:12 describes the animals that Peter was commanded to kill and eat. Part of those animals are described as "all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth". Could Acts 10:12 be excluding fourfooted beasts that are "unclean" as you imply? No, not from the text's wording.

Acts 10:12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
It could also be that common and unclean terms are used synonymously - as there is no fourfooted beast described or listed in the OT that is neither clean nor unclean.

An example of words being used synonymously is found in Revelations 13:7 where we have three terms all describing the same thing: "every tribe, tongue, and nation.".

Not so. Peter uses the word “or” which makes a distinction between the common and unclean.

After reading commentaries on the internet, I don't think that Peter was not being commanded to eat meat from unclean animals. Nevertheless, I don't see Gentile believers being commanded to avoid foods classified as unclean (such as bacon) per the letter written to Gentile believers in Acts 15:23-29. Bear with me as I move the goal posts!

Jesus commanded His disciples to follow His commandments (which did not include dietary nor Sabbath-related edicts). Jesus never purely refenced Mosaic commandments with His disciples. As Jesus said, stop putting new wine into old wine skins (Mark 2:22) - the direction from the Lord is not static. Commands given to the ancient Israelites, are not necessarily forced on the Gentile Church as the focus has changed from a select people to a general call, and Jesus's redemption, with all its benefits, are now in full effect and viewed in the rear view mirror - if you disagree provide scripture. If anyone wants to keep the Mosaic commandments with all its feasts be blessed - just don't put confidence in that per Paul's writing to the Galatians and don't demand other's participation (per Acts 15:23-29).

Cheers

Well... If Jesus can't take away any commandments, then we still have to do the animal sacrifices.
Brother, happy Sabbath! The animal sacrifices were just a stand-in for the future death of Jesus. Without Jesus' death, all those animal sacrifices would be worthless because they borrowed credit from Jesus' future death.
Or maybe it's that the commandments are still there, but Jesus fulfilled them such that we don't have to keep them.
As long as you remain a sinner, "you will die" on judgment day! Jesus' victory over death is to turn a sinner into one obedient to the commandments that show he is no longer a sinner. Jesus described this as being "born again"!

Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. (Romans 8:12-14 NLT)

Animal sacrifices were God's daily provision to eliminate past disobedience to the commandments and give you another chance to remain obedient to the commandments. How God turns our disobedience into obedience is separate from the commandments that show sin.

Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them. (John 14:21 NLT)

Obeying the commandments shows our victory over sin thanks to Jesus' daily service as our High Priest. Turning daily in prayer to our High Priest in heaven to remove our past disobedience gives us another chance to remain obedient to the commandments. Keeping the commandments is not something that is quickly mastered, it takes many tries, like learning to play the piano. We need Jesus to remove our past disobedience to grow up in obedience to the commandments, by Jesus giving you many tries, like a child who learns to walk by getting up again and again when he falls.

Here is the main point: We have a High Priest who sat down in the place of honor beside the throne of the majestic God in heaven. There he ministers in the heavenly Tabernacle, the true place of worship that was built by the Lord and not by human hands. And since every high priest is required to offer gifts and sacrifices, our High Priest must make an offering, too. If he were here on earth, he would not even be a priest, since there already are priests who offer the gifts required by the law. They serve in a system of worship that is only a copy, a shadow of the real one in heaven. For when Moses was getting ready to build the Tabernacle, God gave him this warning: “Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain.” (Hebrews 8:1-5 NLT)

United in our hope for the soon return of Jesus, Jorge

Brother, happy Sabbath! Paul explains after this excerpt that the Spirit is Jesus who has shown us a more glorious "righteousness" than telling us how to love with the previous ten commandments. With the 11th commandment, the commandments have more glory now than the glory of the previous 10 commandments.
Hi Jorge, in your explanation of 2Cor3:6-11 it seems like you didn't address the fact that in verse 11 ("And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!") you failed to see that what was transitory was the ten commandments. Transitory means temporary Jorge. The ten commandments according to the verses have been replaced with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. There is nothing said about the ten commandments being love commands. In fact, the ten commandments were not, in the least, about love, they were about duty. One could refrain from stealing from a neighbor out of duty even if that person had no love for his neighbor. I fail to see one thought in all the passages that add a commandment to the ten commandments. I see that Paul is telling us we are under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Israel was under the guidance of the ten commandments for sure, but we are not. According to the KJV the ten commandments have been done away. 11 "For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious." KJV

He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant (11 commandments). This is a covenant not of written laws (10 commandments), but of the Spirit (following Jesus in the 11th commandment). The old written covenant (10 commandments) ends in death (condemnation); but under the new covenant (11 commandments), the Spirit gives life (Jesus' faster cycle of forgiveness). The old way (animal sacrifices), with laws etched in stone, led to death (condemnation), though it began with such glory (righteousness) that the people of Israel could not bear to look at Moses’ face (fading away). For his face shone with the glory (righteousness) of God, even though the brightness was already fading away (from Moses' face). Shouldn’t we expect far greater glory (righteousness) under the new way (11 commandments), now that the Holy Spirit is giving life (Jesus' faster cycle of forgiveness)? If the old way (animal sacrifices), which brings condemnation, was glorious (righteousness), how much more glorious (righteousness) is the new way, which makes us right with God! In fact, that first glory (righteousness) was not glorious at all compared with the overwhelming glory (righteousness) of the new way (following Jesus in the 11th commandment). So if the old way, which has been replaced (animal sacrifices), was glorious (righteousness), how much more glorious (righteousness) is the new, which remains forever (Jesus' faster cycle of forgiveness)! (2 Corinthians 3:6-11 NLT)

Brother, this next passage tells us two things: the animal sacrifices can "never" take away sin and sin is taken away by Jesus for "all" time, including the time when animal sacrifices were made.

Under the old covenant, the priest stands and ministers before the altar day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never take away sins. But our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. (Hebrews 10:11-12 NLT)

Brother, happy Sabbath! What was transitory was "animal sacrifices", replaced by "Jesus' faster cycle of forgiveness" than slow animal sacrifices, allowing us to deal with even more sin in the 11th commandment of the new covenant than before with only 10 commandments.

Brother, we are told the Holy Spirit "will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard".

“There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’ (John 16:12-15 NLT)

Brother, what Jesus is saying is that everything comes from the "Father". He is the author of the Bible and the one who saw the future to tell us the end from the beginning.

Brother, yes! Jesus is carrying out the Father's plan to save us from sin. The plan was illustrated with animal sacrifices in an earthly "copy" of the true heavenly temple where Jesus ministers daily as our High Priest. Jesus forgives our past sins to give us as many chances as we need to remain obedient to the commandments, as one would learn to play the piano by many attempts until we gain victory over sin.

For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. (John 6:38 NLT)
