  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So how is that BLM thing going?

The 3rd percent is an area or a way to describe that part of town (like some cities describe a part of town as 3rd ward) In Minneapolis they are described by precinct or neighborhood name. No I don't live in the third, my old girlfriend did and I stayed with her family for a time. Precinct buildings move all the time. In the 5th where I grew up it moved 3 times in 15 years.

Great....so you're not from there.

Are you done making up stories about the police there?

Yeah it was set on fire by Ivan Hunter a native of Texas and a rightwing extremist and member of the Boogaloo Bois.

Yeah...all by himself lol

If you look hard enough to find a bad egg...you'll find em.

Now the question is....can we generalize about the group based on that bad egg? BLM is complaining about the police hiring some bad cops....while they let anyone join in their protests from domestic abusers, to pedophiles, to anarchist arsonists?

Is BLM to blame for this guy's actions or not?

I told you that you'd get them all wrong.

Chinese? I'm biased against all people within an ethnic group for no other reason that they are part of an ethnic group? Racist.

You said...

I don't like Chinese.
The Irish aren't really that smart.
I'm not hiring any black guy.
You Welsh can hardly string a sentence together

The first one isn't "the Chinese" or "Chinese people" so one would only use that phrasing when talking about a thing that is Chinese, not a Chinese person.

Irish? I was talking about dumb tactics that the Irish football team used playing against the English. So I was talking about a team and not an ethnic group (I'll be trying not to use the word 'race'). So not racist.

You didn't say "they aren't playing smart" nor did you say that the team isn't smart. You said the Irish aren't smart and therefore made a negative generalization about an entire group of people.

Black guy? Wahddya mean 'possibly'? They are all 'possibly'. But you said you could tell without any context. So it either is or it isn't. Pick one.

No then. It doesn't express any racist belief. It's a statement about hiring....which could be based on a racist belief, or not, but by itself....no, not racist.

Welsh? I was talking to my wife when she mangled some phrase. We're both Welsh so if it was meant seriously then I'd be including myself. If I said it to any other nationality and meant it, then it would be racist. But not in this context.

You didn't say "we Welsh" you said "you welsh"....which necessarily excludes you from the group of Welsh. Even if it didn't, I see no reason why you couldn't hold racist beliefs about your own race.

The funny thing is my claim was that you can identify a racist statement apart from context. Your attempt to disprove this required....context. How does adding a context later disprove my claim? Of course you can identify a racist statement in context....but you can also do it without any context.

And 'black people are lazy'? That's exhibiting prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group. Paaarp! Racist.

Don't forget to answer the one you couldn't tell one way or the other.

Great. We agree on your definition of racism. That's what most people mean, that's how nearly everyone uses it.

He's Chinese? I'm not hiring him. I don't like Chinese.

The English team could be beaten with just some basic intelligent tactics. But the Irish aren't really that smart. The whole team is playing dumb.

Black people are just lazy. I'm not hiring a black guy.

'You Welsh can hardly string a sentence together.'

'Sarcasm doesn't become you, dear.'

You got them all wrong. And if you change each decision then I'll change the context and you'll still get them all wrong.

Fancy a Chinese tonight? No. I don't like Chinese.
I was going to hire that guy from Dublin. But the Irish aren't really that smart.
I'm not hiring a black guy.
I'm not hiring a white guy. I'm not hiring anybody at all.
You Welsh can hardly string a sentence together. You're a nation of illiterate morons.

Context is all.

That's still not how you would say it lol...but whatever, let's just pretend you ain't so gud wit da wordy words.

The English team could be beaten with just some basic intelligent tactics. But the Irish aren't really that smart. The whole team is playing dumb.

I'm not going into the grammar of this.

Black people are just lazy.

Racist statement.

I'm not hiring a black guy.

When preceded by a racist motive....this becomes a racist statement.

'You Welsh can hardly string a sentence together.'
'Sarcasm doesn't become you, dear.'

Neither does grammar.

You got them all wrong.

Out of context....I got them right.

And if you change each decision then I'll change the context and you'll still get them all wrong.

And what do you think this proves?

Context is all.

Nope. My statement had no context at all...you still managed to identify it as racist.

The race of the person writing or speaking doesn't matter.
Power dynamics don't matter.
Social dynamics and history don't matter.
Context is completely unnecessary.

Thanks for proving my point.

And what do you think this proves?

That you need context. As you said, when it contains context, you can tell:
'When preceded by a racist motive....this becomes a racist statement.'

If the context is missing then you could misinterpret what is being said. And your comment included all the context necessary. It couldn't be misinterpreted. Whereas adding different context to each of mine changes the meaning and the intent of the speaker.

There was no context in my statement...none at all.

Just a subject and verb and adjective.

What's the context you're imagining?

As I said, context allows you to determine intent. The different context in each of my examples changed the intent. The intent in your statement was clear enough. You said you could tell a racist statement without context. I gave you four examples and you got them all wrong. Lack of context meant you coukd not determine the intent.

You got my four wrong. I got your one right. I think that should tell you something.

evidence?

"Racism is the belief that groups of humans possess different behavioral traits corresponding to inherited attributes and can be divided based on the superiority of one race over another. It may also mean prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against other people because they are of a different race or ethnicity."

Racism - Wikipedia

Nothing fitting this definition is said by the reporter in the report.

Great....so you're not from there.

I'm not from the 3rd but I'm from Minneapolis and I have spent plenty of time there. I've been pulled over there and I've been harassed for walking down the street there I have seen how they operate firsthand. The 3rd precinct is the largest in Minneapolis and covers a large portion of the south side and I did grow up on the south side. You don't have to live in an area all of your life to see how they operate.

I don't remember saying that I'm "from" there but I have maintained that I've lived there. I used to order Gyros from Cup Foods where the infamous counterfeit money was used. Do you think I know nothing of an area of town I lived in for decades? I still know someone who lives literally four blocks from where George Floyd was murdered.

I sincerely doubt your story and characterization of the police.

You seem to have forgotten that the 3rd precinct department building burned down and they had been operating out of elsewhere. That's a rather big mistake for someone living there.

What it appears you're trying to do is justify your blanket statements against police to claim they are racist.

Ok.

Doesn't belong? Is there a membership card? I thought they encouraged everyone to join in their protests.

He's as much a member of BLM as anyone else.

Of course you would say so because they are black

The three BLM supporters I mentioned there are white....but you go ahead and keep trying to suggest I'm racist. I couldn't care less about your opinion of me.

The intent in your statement was clear enough.

What's the context?

Don't give me some garbage about "intent" ....you are trying to move the goalposts.

Just admit it....context isn't necessary.

You said you could tell a racist statement without context.

I said you should be able to tell a racist without context....and you did, refuting your prior post. Nice try.

You got my four wrong. I got your one right. I think that should tell you something.

No...I got all of them right. If those were out of context, I was right. Imagine them written on a wall.

You added context later and claimed I was wrong. I never said that you couldn't determine a racist statement in context. I said it's not necessary.

There's nothing about your quiz that proved me wrong....you just proved me right twice.

They may be working out of somewhere else but they are still working the 3rd precinct area. Did all of the police in the 3rd lose their jobs? The Sargent, lieutenants, and whatnot all got pink slips? I guess I did miss that.

They haven't stopped policing the area. They still have the personnel. The building means nothing. You can run a police precinct out of a tent. It's about the culture of the police in that area. They focus primarily on domination and fear. Other precincts are run differently in the same city.

Oh I've seen you digging pretty hard....and failing. When it's tossed out as cheaply as some do....it loses its effect. When someone accuses another of racism for any criticism of a black person at all...especially Cullors...it's completely hollow. Nobody is criticizing her because she's black....they're criticizing her because she's a scam artist.

You don't seem to understand that the precinct doesn't just sit in their building. They patrol the streets of the precinct's district. Nothing has changed in that regard. Who cares where they are located? It's what they do when they are on patrol that matters. Everyone who gets arrested goes downtown to the courthouse building. Not to the precinct. The precinct is just where they punch in and have their meetings. What does the location of the precinct have to do with the manner in which they patrol their precinct's district?

You're attacking my credibility because you can't defend what really goes in in south Minneapolis between 35W and Bloomington Ave.
