  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Question about sources?

long time no see!
I've just been lurking lol.
So, question is:
Is hearing the Old Testament from a Jewish perspective bad/wrong/unadvisable?

I’ll give an example of what I'm specifically referring to to help make things clearer.

For example, the Most Blessed Theotokos’ name is Mary.
But it was Miriam yes? In Hebrew?
And Miriam was Moses sister.
I only made that connection from looking at academic Jewish sources.

I hope that makes sense.
There are other examples but I can’t think of any off the top of my head.

Of course, there are some sources that I don’t think I should use as any sort of source like the Midrash, the Talmuld, etc.
And finally, to use good judgment that all Orthodox sources and though overrules any other source I find?

Now, this isn’t just for Jewish academic sources but for like all sources lol.

bc idk what I’m even going to do with myself when I go back to school for my masters in library science uh oh lol
:hhh:

Could you clarify what you mean about Miriam versus Mary? Do you just mean that Mary had the same name as Moses’ sister?

Oh I’m sorry!
Yes. That’s what I meant. They had the same name.
Mary is just the English form of the Latin Maria. Which then Maria is the Latin form of the Hebrew Miriam/Miryam

Absolutely, their names were the same - just with different forms. The same goes with Anne, Anna and Hannah, and many others.

Looking up the meanings of the names definitely is interesting as well! For example, Joachim (Yehoyaqim יְהוֹיָקִים) means Raised by Yahweh - essentially, established by God.

Just like "Jesus" is "Joshua" in Hebrew

and Joshua leads the Chosen People into the Promised Land, Jesus leads the Chosen People to the Kingdom

It is not unadvisable in any way. And just we've seen in this thread, the names we use are transliterations of Jewish names and seeing them in their original versions is interesting in and of itself. Just as @ArmyMatt pointed out, it was Joshua who led the Israelites to the promised land, just as it is Joshua (Jesus) who leads Christians to salvation. Moshe (Moses), as a figure of God, turned the kingdom over to Joshua, a parallel to Christianity that is unrecognized without knowing the Jewish names.

But there is a point of caution in studying Jewish sources. It is no secret that there is a longstanding contention between Christianity and Judaism. So oftentimes in studying Jewish sources you get "the other side of the argument". I have found it easy in the past to get led astray from Christianity by studying Jewish sources only to find out later that I was chasing someone's opinion rather than fact. If you ever run across something that causes you to doubt Christian teaching in favor of Jewish teaching don't rush into a decision on it until you've investigated it further.

yep. and I read somewhere that even if he didn’t sin, Moses still would have died outside of the Promised Land. while the Law can get you close, only the Savior can lead you in.

Hannah the Prophetess of the Old Testament was barren, and she beseeched God to give her a child. When her child Samuel was born, she dedicated him to God as a Nazarite. (Samuel means “asked of God”). Samuel anointed Kings.

St Anna was barren, and she also beseeched God to giver a child. She and St Joachim dedicated their child Mary to God as well. (One possible meaning for Mary is Wished for child). Mary is the mother of the King of Kings.

Hannah (Anna) means Grace or Favor. ❤️
