What is righteousness?

Definition of righteous

1 : acting in accord with divine or moral law : free from guilt or sin
Definition of RIGHTEOUS

Should we take Webster's word for it?

What does YHWH say?

(CLV) Dt 6:25
So it shall come to be righteousness for us when we observe to do all this instruction before Yahweh our Elohim, just as He had enjoined on us.

I notice that YHWH requires us to "do" something.

Could this have changed since YHWH sent his own son to teach us obedience to his Torah?

(CLV) 1Jn 3:7
Little children, let no one be deceiving you. He who is doing righteousness is just, according as He is just.

There's that "do" word again.

Shabbat shalom.

There certainly is a do .... but who is doing it?

It is the work of Christ in the believer.

“Keep my statutes and do them. I am the Lord, who sanctifies you.”
(Leviticus 20:8)

It is a good reminder that none of us is holy, pure in and of ourselves, that God is doing a purifying, sanctifying work in all of us.

Galatians 2:20
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

1 Peter 1:16
Since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Who gives the power to perform? Jesus.

John 15:5

English Standard Version
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Are you not believing that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The declarations which I am speaking to you I am not speaking from Myself. Now the Father, remaining in Me, He is doing His works.

Hello
The definition of "Righteousness" you quote is very clear ..acting in accord with divine or moral law: (free from guilt or sin)...

In other words; we can only act in accord with divine or moral law when "we free from guilt or sin"...

Some thinks, they can follow the Law (Torah) whilst at the same time still struggling with sins..

We are sanctified and worked on by the word of God, by the word living, meaning that Christ died and rose to show we believe in the living God.

Worked on is what people do and believe in, to grow, to do better, to have a belief in God.

God has us to believe in being raised from the dead with Him, it is done, and grown, it is made Holy, it is to be believed in or demonstrated that it is not,m by our words and actions, they tell all.

My understanding is this ...

sanctification

It’s the reciprocation of our love toward God. We are sanctified with the help of the Holy Spirit (Comforter) that Jesus gives us. Sanctification means to set a part or to make holy. His Holy Spirit helps us in this process to become more like Christ. This is not a one time event; it’s a life long process (we stumble here and there). The process of sanctifying and purifying us (the works that Jesus does in the believer, and is not of ourselves) ... it is HIM working in us and through us. We are separated from the world. We are in the physical world but not of the world spiritually. Our mind (thinking) changes over time and therefore our actions also change. Our faith increases more and more as He faithfully works in us. Hebrews 12:2

The Hebrew word is "kadosh." It means dedicated. We are called to be dedicated to YHWH.

If we are dedicated; we are obedient.

We know that the law is spiritual.

(CLV) 1Jn 5:3
For this is the love of God, that we may be keeping His precepts. And His precepts are not heavy,

As told, the workmanship of God is when we are created in Christ Jesus ( this is the righteous creation, plants of righteousness)..

Philippians 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Isaiah 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

Worked on is what people do and believe in, to grow, to do better, to have a belief in God.

God has us to believe in being raised from the dead with Him, it is done, and grown, it is made Holy, it is to be believed in or demonstrated that it is not, by our words and actions, they tell all.

Righteousness then is as said, our body to be an instrument of righteousness, by being alive from the dead with Christ,, and not being in unbelief to be unrighteousness to sin by that unbelief...

Romans 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Shabbat shalom.

Righteousness is a character trait of God that is straightforwardly expressed by doing what is righteous and God's law is His instructions for how to express that character trait, not for how to attain it. For example, God's law reveals that it is righteous to help the poor, but no amount of helping the poor will ever cause someone to become righteous because the one and only way that there has ever been to become righteous is by grace through faith. We express our character traits through our actions, so when God declares us to be righteous, He is also declaring us to be someone who expresses His righteousness through our actions in obedience to His instructions for how to do that found in His law in accordance with Christ's example. Christ expressed the righteousness of God through his actions by living in sinless obedience to God's law, so God's law describes the way that a righteous person lives as it describes the life of Christ, but was not given as a means of becoming righteous even through perfect obedience to it (Romans 4:4-5).

In Deuteronomy 6:20-25, obedience to God's law is in regard to having faith in God to defeat Pharaoh, faith in God to bring them out of Egypt, faith in God to bring them to the land that He promises their fathers, faith that God's law was given for our own good, and faith in God to preserve them, so it is by faith that we are careful to obey all that God has commanded, and by the same faith that righteousness is ours.

There's probably more "do not's" than "do's" in the Law.

There are 248 positive commands to do something and 365 negative commands to not do something, though negative commands should also be understood as commands to do the reverse, such as the command not to steal also being understood as being the command to be generous. Furthermore, when we are presented with the opportunity to decide whether or not to obey one of God's negative commands, then choosing to do anything but what those commands prohibit is doing something in obedience to them.
