I hate when people take simple scripture and interpret it to mean what they want

The title says it all. I just listened to a sermon about the verse where Jesus says "unless you forgive others your Heavenly Father will not forgive you" and then proceeded to say "That might sound like if you don't forgive others you're going to hell, but I think it means this..."

Like bro Jesus literally simplified it to forgive or you won't be forgiven, that's what it means it's not some complicated thing that cannot be comprehended or needs 10 years of study in the greek to truly translate it better than experts who translate scripture and is their job.

Just wanted to vent my frustration when people overcomplicate scripture that is very simply put.

I hear you bro. The Lord doesn't need people to be rocket scientists to get the fundamentals. And when people start overcomplicating things, it allows the enemy to help bend plain truth into anything desired.

Often it has to do with the speaker's view on interpretation. Literal, spiritual or a mix of both. Seeing an allegory, where there isn't one, or having no regard for context.
Ya I mean I don't think ALL scripture is simple, there is a time and place to interpret to better understand, I've just had a lot of frustration with people basically turning scripture into whatever they want it to mean instead of the true meaning of it

Thanks I'm glad I've got people who at least understand my frustration

It frustrates me too. Once you have all the plain basic fundamentals in place, you build on that and continue - like building a house. And of course, to understand revelations to perfection, yes, that is Next level.

What I find more offensive is the Preacher making a mockery of Christianity. Outlandish claims that bring ridicule down on all Christians.

Yes, then there's that. Like one guy who said something about Jesus breaking the legs of a sheep that kept on wandering off makes me sick to my stomach.

I think more prophecy has to come to pass before Revelation can be understood. Just like parts of Daniel.

Face it. Today the Bible is mostly a "Roarsach" test for every religious crackpot out there.

I think it is not that simple. The human mind often has an adverse reaction to the things of the Spirit.

1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

The following is one verse that I continue to wrestle with. For we know “God is Love”, and says “Do unto others as you would have them do to you”. Yet the following scripture taken at face value says that most people will perish, and only a few have life.

Mat 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

It just is hard to comprehend, that love damns most. It messes with my theology.

So what do I think of this scripture? I am still divided. That is why I investigate its meaning, not out of rebellion.

The word find can actually mean, perceive, or see.

A prolonged form of a primary word εὕρω heurō; which (together with another cognate form, εὑρέω heureō) is used for it in all the tenses except the present and imperfect; to find (literally or figuratively): - find, get, obtain, perceive, see.

So Mat 7:14 could actually say:

Mat 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that perceive or see it.

I really don’t know. It is not that I am trying to be contentious I am just trying to understand who God is.

Perhaps a better view is to accept that it's the sinner that keeps herself out of the Kingdom of God. God is unyielding to sin and if an individual refuses to follow the lead of the Holy Spirit and is in rebellion, how can such a person be allowed entry?

Edit: Sermon on the Mt, Matt. 5,6,and 7. Be like a little child in receiving correction, etc.

I used to struggle with things like that. A lot. I could never fathom how so many souls could get tossed into damnation for the smallest of missteps.

It is only by the Holy Spirit that we can experience His undying love for us. This comforts us and assures us of salvation. He is pure love. Without Him, we are lost. The Spirit ministers to us and step by step, brings us closer to the Father. It can take time, (It certainly did with me - 44 years into the process) but the Spirit reveals the heart of the Father, and at a point we can't help but fall in love with God - Father, Son and Spirit. What I'm trying to say is that complete submission to the Spirit is the way that enabled me to understand who God is. He doesn't want us to be afraid of Him, but just a healthy measure of respect is what matters. There are no words in this life to fully describe the magnitude of His love.
