The only thing they've denied in India is their part in spawning the variant, hence the new name "Delta", which mainstream media has gladly embraced.

The name "delta" follows a convention from the World Health Organization, to name prominent variants after Greek letters.

Narendra Modhi, India's premier, is a right-wing nationalist, similar to Trump or Bolsinaro, and has generally failed to take COVID-19 seriously. He's also allowed mass religious festivals that drew millions of people, all the while the virus was surging in his country.

Blame for the virus was put on Trump. It is now put on the unvaccinated, who are seen as Trump supporters. So no real change in blame.

"Blame for the virus" was never put on Trump. Trump was blamed for not taking the spread in the US seriously enough.

That's my basic premise...

I'm not going to go out of my way to protect people who both A) don't take the virus seriously, and B) have done nothing but mock us for taking it seriously.

It may be a poor analogy, but...

It'd be like making a family member's car payment for them when you know they have a gambling problem they have no intention of addressing.

The longer you cover for them, the longer you enable the problematic behavior.

Remember, though, that my first point was that "Influenza is still out there."

By masking, social distancing, and hand hygiene, the world sailed through the influenza season practically unscathed. That's not a lesson to ignore.

...but the same was true with influenza. Immunosuppressed folks were always at higher risks from that as they either couldn't be vaccinated, or would have a week immunoresponse to a flu vaccine even if they did get it.

Immunosuppressed have always existed...is your suggestion that everyone should've always been masking up the whole time?

There are some societies that do that, but not in Western cultures that I'm aware of.

Never too old to learn.

Variants supposedly come from a virus having to evolve in response to resistance.

No.

Mutations come as a matter of chance. Over the course of thousands of replications, some are going to be mutations strictly randomly. In fact, the lack of resistance permits more replications and increases the number of mutations. The vast majority of mutations will not provide any advantages, but every now and then, one will.

Given these pieces of info, wouldn't that mean that me going back to wearing a mask is solely for the benefit of anti-vaccine types who don't take it seriously and have no intention of getting vaccinated anyway?
Yes. It does. But this is only Tuesday. Give it a few days or weeks and the advice will be the opposite of what you heard today.

We were always told that a mask doesn't protect the wearer, which is why it was advised that infected people, and unvaccinated people were to wear masks. Now having even the vaccinated wear them is advising people to ignore the science and listen to fear.

A tee-shirt doesn't do much to protect the wearer, but a good N-95 or KN-95 mask properly worn does.

I know where that name comes from, and I know why it is being used: Covid: India tells social media firms to remove 'India variant' from content

Early in the pandemic, there were many who didn't take it all that seriously. Too bad they don't get blamed equally: Nancy Pelosi Visits San Francisco's Chinatown Amid Coronavirus Concerns

I haven't seen Fauci on the news telling people to go out and buy those masks. Is it the latest science the Left wing of the federal government is adopting?

I still vaccinate since while my area is good about vaccination rates, still too many people not vaccinated, and not wearing masks, for added protection for myself and others I will wear masks till fully safe.

When will you consider yourself to be "fully safe"? I don't see a declaration of that being made by the governments anytime soon, unless they mandate that we all stay home with a SWAT team stationed outside to make sure we never leave the house.

Hmmmm. Rather different than what we're now being told to expect from vaccines for Covid. A number of different vaccines are available for the same virus, and now we're experiencing a second pandemic is the second year of its existence. Those other diseases, not so much.

Much better vaccination rates with the other vaccines, although there are perennial problems with anti-vaxiers.

Yeah, well I'm vaccinated against Measles and Mumps and all the rest, so I'm not fearful of those who don't get vaxxed against those diseases.
