You are the gender that your peers determine that you are beginning in elementary school and throughout your adult years. It matters not what you think, wish, or feel. Even what biological sex you are.

you leave your gender to a group of five year olds?

Can I self identify as a specific race?

it was an interesting question posed in a group I am part of.

if you are born biologically one gender and at some point later in life you identify as another, could the same be true for race?

I grew up in an area very close to a strong Polish community, love the culture, love the food, even learned a little of the language.

I think I’d like to identify as Polish, the immediate benefit is that I would then be considered white by race.

Thoughts?

Polish is a nationality/ethnicity. That is not the same as race.

Gender is a social/cultural norm. That is not the same as sex.

Neither race nor sex can be biologically altered without more advancements in gene manipulation. Nationality/ethnicity and gender can be altered simply by a person's choice.

You are confusing terminology.

Gender is a social/cultural norm. That is not the same as sex.

That is completely dependent on what definition you choose to use.

Gender-
either of the two sexes (male and female), especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones. The term is also used more broadly to denote a range of identities that do not correspond to established ideas of male and female.
"a condition that affects people of both genders"

It doesn't matter how somebody looks, it matters what their chromosomes are.
XX and you are a female
XY you are a male
Mixed and you can claim to be intersex. But the intersex are still just degrees of male and female together.

Kamala Harris is Asian and Black. That shouldn't be confusing in 2020 — but it is to some

During her 2020 presidential campaign, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., found herself at the center of a controversy about which Americans can claim to be Black, or Black enough — because of both her biracial identity and her immigrant parents.

Born to a Jamaican father and an Indian mother...

People from India are considered to be Asian. The U.S. Census Bureau considers people from the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and the Far East to be Asian. —Reference.com

Tiger Woods has also been claimed by both American blacks and Asians.

As I said, social/cultural norm. The first sentence of your definition agrees.

Social norms change. Definitions change.

When we hold gender reveal parties, we are revealing the sex of the child.

Gender is sex.

Changing the definitions does change the chromosomes.

I can say I identify as a cat, demand you call me fluffy the cat, chase mice, use a littler box and eat nothing but cat food. I can even hiss at people and purr.

It doesn’t make me a cat.

Likewise a person can identify as whatever they choose to, they can chemically and surgically alter their body. It doesn’t changed their biological makeup.

call it sex, call it gender, call it monkey noodles. It doesn’t change their biology.

Lawmakers can’t cite local examples of trans girls in sports

Legislators in more than 20 states have introduced bills this year that would ban transgender girls from competing on girls’ sports teams in public high schools. Yet in almost every case, sponsors cannot cite a single instance in their own state or region where such participation has caused problems.

The Associated Press reached out to two dozen state lawmakers sponsoring such measures around the country as well as the conservative groups supporting them and found only a few times it’s been an issue among the hundreds of thousands of American teenagers who play high school sports.

In South Carolina, for example, Rep. Ashley Trantham said she knew of no transgender athletes competing in the state and was proposing a ban to prevent possible problems in the future.

In Tennessee, House Speaker Cameron Sexton conceded there may not actually be transgender students now participating in middle and high school sports; he said a bill was necessary so the state could be “proactive.”

Some lawmakers didn’t respond to AP’s queries. Others in places like Mississippi and Montana largely brushed aside the question or pointed to a pair of runners in Connecticut.

In the midst of the world's most serious public health in a century, with over 30 million Americans testing positive for COVID-19 and 550,000+ related deaths, one might assume that responsible politicians who take their positions seriously, wouldn't be deliberately going out of their way to invent problems to solve!

YOU WOULD BE WRONG - apparently those currently sponsoring anti-transgender legislation in more than 20 states find themselves hard pressed when asked to cite local examples that would justify such measures!

This appears to be yet another example of social conservatives providing a solution, in search of a problem!

Opinion | When Biological Boys Compete With Girls

Exclusive: 2 Girls Speak Out on Having to Compete With Biological Males

These girls are hurt by transgender competition

‘Justice’ for trans athletes is unfair to girls like my daughter

Boys claiming to be girls are dominating girls’ sports. These girls are fighting back

I think an intermediary solution might be to have three tiers of competition,

  • (cis) males
  • (cis) females
  • trans (males & females)
and then once the relative levels of performance within the integrated trans group has become sufficiently stratified to identify / exclude any apparent advantages, look at reintegrating back into two tiers accordingly.

Which hopefully will give hardworking white girls the chance to go to college on a sports scholarship, although I wouldn't put money on any hardworking white girls (trans or otherwise) winning any 100m medals in the Olympics.

Why not follow the science and have biological males compete with biological males, biological females compete with biological females?

Did following science get kicked to the curb?

Sorry, I've not seen any science on this, but if there is science, then by all means follow it.

(Although I did not realise that I had inadvertently barged into a debate hosted by the International Science Council)

I first learned about basic biology in middle school.

The biological differences between males and females. For example, chromosomes (female XX, male XY), reproductive organs (ovaries, testes), hormones (oestrogen, testosterone). Biology is science and has never changed.

Never heard of them, so don't worry - you are not barging in to anything here. Nothing from them is being hosted here.

Generally speaking I would agree that this is all a bit silly.

Someone's internal sense of identity, is just not relevant to who they should be allowed to compete against.

If they recognise that there is an apparent mismatch between their external physical attributes and their internal sense of identity, then they must also recognise that there is a mismatch between their external physical attributes and their competitors external physical attributes, regardless of how similar their internal sense of identity is.

Races are clearly won by external physical attributes, not internal senses of identity.

so you are wanting to systematically run genetic tests on everyone to determined who is male and who is female?
