From: String theorist Michio Kaku: 'Reaching out to aliens is a terrible idea'

Stephen Hawking said that he didn’t believe in God because the big bang happened instantly and there was no time for God to create a universe, therefore God couldn’t exist. I have a different point of view. My parents were Buddhists and in Buddhism there is Nirvana, timelessness, no beginning and no end. But my parents put me in a Presbyterian church, so I went to Sunday school every week and learned about Genesis and how the universe was created in seven days. Now with the multiverse idea we can meld these two diametrically opposed paradigms together. According to string theory, big bangs are happening all the time. Even as we speak, Genesis is taking place somewhere in the cosmos. And what is the universe expanding into? Nirvana. Eleven-dimensional hyperspace is Nirvana. So you can have Buddhism and Judeo-Christian philosophy in one theory.

I will paraphrase to say that Michio Kaku reaching out to the public is a terrible idea.
Great physicist, but spends way to much time on possible woo to make his attempts to bring science to the masses to be useful.

ETA this is a prime example. commenting about bringing religion and science together via string theory is bad physics and bad theology.

The multiverse is a horrible fudge in the context it was postulated.

The idea of infinite universes with all pasts and futures that you select on observation? To get round the idea thar nothing canexist at all till observed, which then makes existence subjective, not objective.

QM is bonkers at philosophical level , showing science is just a model not an underlying reality.

Also, I’m not sure hawking was aware enough of philosophy to see how badly he pulled the rug out from under himself. One of his last postulations was “ model dependent reality” that is mutually irreconcilable models needed , which need choosing case by case. Goodbye the theory of everything.

Clearly the spontaneous creation and collapsing of other universes is not ruled out by the model, or indeed speculation. But if the model is suspect as a viable explanation of what is, not what we observe, then any other conclusions from it are invalid.

In short the shrinking God of the gaps, is still a universe sized unknown at the level of what exists and why. All science does is find patterns in observations of what it does. That is - the limited part we can observed projected into our sense dimensions.

So what? .. That's all humans do too .. Its a nice, co-incidental match-up wouldn't you say?
True! And useful for keeping me warm, fed and entertained.
Not much use for answering why I’m here, or what happens when I pop my clogs.

String theory is a physcial theorist's toolkit.
As with all toolkits, lots of ideas can be assembled.

trouble is . You can write lovely equations in 12 dimensions. But only resolve a few special cases in 3! It’s a nuisance is “ observability” used to give me all sorts of problems back in the day of high order theoretic state space controllers/ observers/ filters

In order to properly design those to be useful, one has to first understand, then describe the problems one is trying to solve.
AdS/CFT correspondence was a product of string theory thinking which progressed understanding of quantum gravity and quantum field theories.
There's an observable 'nuisance' for ya .. right there!

So you want us to follow some religion you made up by combining two unproven concepts? I don't have that kind of faith.

Why does: 'Why am I here' matter so much?
Is that question 'for keeping me warm, fed and entertained'?
(Certainly sounds that way to me). :)
It’s called an enquiring mind.
Trying to Work out whether self sim is just my own masochism reflected from a mirror of an existential world view.

"Stephen Hawking said that he didn’t believe in God because the big bang happened instantly and there was no time for God to create a universe, therefore God couldn’t exist."
Just because time for our universe may have started when our universe was created in the big bang, it does not mean that time didn't exist in what existed before.
Of course as Christians we believe, that God, who is eternal was there already. God may well experience time, a timeline for Himself, not to age or change but just to mark events (which is what a timeline really is, just an event marker)
So for God there was a time before He created the angels and a time after, there was a time before He created our universe and a time after etc.
Just like i can watch a movie about a persons life in 2 hours, so the 'movie' timeline moves at a different speed to my timeline (as measured by my wall clock), so too we may exist in a timeline (and time speed etc), quite different to how time may pass in Heaven / spiritual realm.
Its a logical fallacy (ie logically self contradictory) and logical inconsistency to assume the universe started from nothing. Something MUST have been there to start with to give rise to the universe, unless of course your definition of nothing isn't really nothing.
