But since we have contributed to the failure of those states we maybe should do it anyway.
No, we should do no such thing. At some point we have to stop the ham fisted interventionism, why not now?

Oh, we just need to take down the most powerful multi-national organized crime cartels in the hemisphere on foreign soil where there is a long history of resentment towards American intervention? No biggie, surely cheaper than building larger immigration processing centers or hiring more boarder patrol agents.

.plus the impact of the drug trade in Central America and within our own country.

Regardless of which is more expensive, our goal should be to stabilize communities at the source of illegal immigration. It won't be easy and it will take time. The alternative is endless migration to the US.

That's right--stop propping up oligarchs and kleptocrats to protect American corporate interests like we have been doing for over a century.

We chose to create that particular mess with our prohibitionist nonsense.

Regardless of which is more expensive

If the expense is in the end irrelevant, why did your bring up an option being cheaper in your easier post?

our goal should be to stabilize communities at the source of illegal immigration.

The stability of central American countries is the responsibility of those countries, not us. They are running on the same hardware as the rest of us.

The alternative is endless migration to the US.
In this false dilemma, sure. In reality not so much. If we made illegal economic migration untenable, strictly enforcing the law so employers would no longer make use of illegal labor, and they have no motivation to come.

Agreed. As I said, stop the ham fisted intervention, including trying to fix the countries.

We're not talking about immigrants, we're talking abut refugees seeking asylum.

Isn't it all essentially the same thing? People from Central and South America flooding our southern border creating a crisis situation?

I suppose it is entirely their responsibility as well to deal with the social disruption caused by the drug trade.

We just need a leader who isn't afraid to say no to immigrants... We had one, but... He got "cancelled"...

He wasn't "canceled", he was outvoted by some 74 million votes.

There is no "crisis". There are people at the border who need our help, and we should give it to them.

Well, the cartels know their products are super-highly addictive, and are illegal because of that factor... So I don't see how the American addicts can be blamed, when the reality is that they've been unfairly victimized by a product known to cause addiction.

No. Immigrants come to stay. Asylum seekers want temporary protection until it's safe to go home again. Granting asylum is not the same thing as granting permanent residency.

If we're going to split hairs here, they are asylum seekers not refugees. One does not get a designation of refugee until their asylum application is approved. Last year 73% of those were denied in the US.

Remind me in the summer months during peak migration times that there's no crisis. Because this is just the beginning.

There's no crisis unless impoverished migrants scare you.

Should the Central American asylum seekers cases get approved they may as well be. When one is fleeing from a war or ethnic conflicts relatively easy to establish when it is at an end, there is still a great deal of gnashing of teeth when those refugees are to be sent home but not to get too far off track, but if we are granting people asylum because their country has really bad crime at what point do they get sent home? A set reduction in the murder rate or gang activity?

Well, nobody posts explicitly what they mean these days. everything is so veiled, you have to guess.
