AOC called out for claim she was ‘nearly assassinated’ during Capitol siege; she hits back saying ‘it was actually worse’ - Breaking911

According to an Instagram video posted by Ocasio-Cortez just days after the siege, she stated that she was in her office when the U.S. Capitol building was stormed. She also claimed that rioters had entered her office, according to Newsweek.

In that story it turns out that her great terror was that her own security came bursting into her office asking where she was so they could keep her safe... an even greater outrage in her view than having an actual rioter do that?? seriously?? That's the size of the problem?

I can foresee many news cycles working on that one.

PolitiFact - Ask PolitiFact: Where was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during the Capitol riot?

The criticism also reached cable news. "There were no rioters in (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's) hallway," said Fox News host Tucker Carlson. "Trump voters weren't trying to kill her."

Ocasio-Cortez stood by her remarks and pushed back against the attacks online. As she went back and forth on Twitter with conservative activist and One America News Network correspondent Jack Posobiec, readers asked PolitiFact what was true and what wasn’t.

It’s true that Ocasio-Cortez was not in the main Capitol building where the House and Senate chambers are located as rioters broke in. She was in the Cannon building.

But she never claimed in her video to have been in the main Capitol building, and the Cannon building was one of two buildings in the broader Capitol complex that was forced to evacuate.

She had reason to feel threatened. One of the insurrectionists had tweeted "Assassinate AOC"

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Capitol rioter charged with threatening to 'assassinate' New York congresswoman - CNNPolitics

Garret Miller of Texas faces five criminal charges stemming from the Capitol insurrection, including trespassing offenses and making death threats. Miller allegedly tweeted, "assassinate AOC," according to court documents.
He also said the police officer who fatally shot a Trump supporter during the attack "deserves to die" and won't "survive long" because it's "huntin[g] season."

The whole point of protesting is to make ppl uncomfortable. Activists take that discomfort w/ the status quo & advocate for concrete policy changes. Popular support often starts small & grows. To folks who complain protest demands make others uncomfortable... that’s the point.

What event happened that showed she was "nearly assassinated - actually worse than that"

I would like to think that all Capitol police would be protective and most were. In fact, about 140 of them were injured and one was killed. Two were suspended though, and at least one was doing selfies with the insurrectionists.

AOC had a right to be concerned. After all, there were campaign ads like this:

146263675_10157557770416857_2635016542793457246_o.jpg

She has been targeted by the right.
I could link to some reports of the death threats, but the language used is really bad.
U.S. Coast Guard Lieutenant Christopher was arrested by federal agents in 2018 for threatening AOC, Pelosi and others. He had 15 firearms and over 1000 rounds of ammo.
It didn't help that the Washington Free Beacon wrote that she lived in a 'luxury' apartment and while they did not give the address, they wrote about the landmarks in the same area.
There have been plenty of death threats to her and other Dems, so I think that Jan. 6th was terribly frightening.

I am sure that Officer Sicknick's family thought it was bad.

No, AOC Didn't Make Up Her Capitol Riots Experience

While Ms. Ocasio-Cortez was not in the main, domed Capitol building when the rioters breached it, she never said she was. She accurately described being in the Cannon House Office Building, which is part of the Capitol complex and is connected to the main building by tunnels.

In her livestream, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez recalled hiding in a bathroom and thinking she was going to die as unknown people entered her office and shouted, “Where is she?” They turned out to be Capitol Police officers who had not clearly identified themselves, and Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said so on Instagram. She did not claim that they were rioters — only that, from her hiding spot, she initially thought they were.

During the riot, reporters wrote on Twitter that the Cannon building was being evacuated because of credible threats, and that Capitol Police officers were running through the hallways and entering offices just as Ms. Ocasio-Cortez described......

True.
She ended up in Rep. Katie Porter's office and from what Rep. Porter said I believe she was truly terrified that she was going to die that day.
Katie Porter tells how AOC acted and what she said in this short video.

AOC and Capitol riot: Breaking down accusations made by Candace Owens, Nancy Mace and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - CNNPolitics

Ocasio-Cortez's location
Owens is not the only conservative media figure to mock or challenge Ocasio-Cortez's account of being scared for her life during the insurrection. Some of the critics have pointedly noted that Ocasio-Cortez was in her office in the Cannon House Office Building at the time, not in the Capitol itself.
Facts First: These claims from Ocasio-Cortez critics leave out key context. First, the Cannon building is connected to the Capitol via an underground walkway that is frequently used by legislators, aides, journalists and others; the Cannon building is considered part of the Capitol complex. Second, Ocasio-Cortez did not mislead about where she was during the insurrection; she explicitly explained on Instagram Live that her office is in a building near the Capitol.
Third, the Capitol Police instructed people to evacuate the Cannon building amid the Capitol attack. (The all-clear was announced less than an hour after the evacuation announcement.)
Fourth, a pipe bomb was found that day outside the office of the Republican National Committee, which is just down the street from the Cannon building. Google Maps puts the walking distance between the two buildings at 260 feet.
"As the Capitol complex was stormed and people were being killed, none of us knew in the moment what areas were compromised," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Thursday in response to criticism from Republican Rep. Nancy Mace.

Consider yourself fortunate if you have never been terrified for your life. If you have never been stalked, threatened, or publicly attacked by people more physically powerful than you, lucky you.

Look at how PTSD can take a veteran of war and make him terrified of loud noises. When you know that there is even one person out there that wants to torture, kill, or rape you and you are a petite woman you walk around on edge.

The fact that the threat wasn’t real, that she was mistaken as to what was happening, doesn’t mean that her fear wasn’t real.

Look I'm someone who has disagreed with alot of AOC positions. However her reactions to this seem perfectly reasonable and probably the response many would have. There was angry mob in the complex she was and she was certainly was a big target for them.

I have been shot at twice. I saw the barrel flare, I heard the report and heard the bullet land within a foot of me.

She freaked out plain and simple and over reacted.

I also understand it’s the people who were actually there and experiencing the same events some a whole lot closer who are calling her out on her over drama

You should look on a map. They were very near her and I don’t know what you mean about being surrounded by capitol police. She thought protesters, some who had expressed a desire to hurt her, were banging on her door looking for her. That would be terrifying.

Yes, being a target of death threats amid such an event will cause a overzealous fight or flight reaction. It could happen to anyone. She did nothing wrong. Where is your compassion?

The ONLY ones banging on her door were uniformed Capitol Police.

The rioters never entered the building she was in.

That can be very scary, but her two hour video diatribe brought it beyond reality. That is what her other CONGRESS people are bringing up. People who were in the same building and people who were in the building that was actually being attacked are saying she is over dramatizing the event.

Oh give me a break...... her over reaction (the two hour diatribe), was not during the event - it was well after things had settled down and she was safe and sound. There were 435 other Congress Members in the building at the same time, including those whose offices were ransacked (the persons doing so should be in jail a long time), and their reaction was not nearly as vociferous and overly dramatic as AOC's and now Tahlib's.

She didn’t know that, so it’s moot. Have you looked at the map? The protesters were right outside. "Over dramatizing" implies she exaggerated events, and I’ve seen no evidence of that . She feared for her life, for very understandable reasons and it’s incredibly callous to criticize her simply for being afraid.
