What I see in the Gospels is an anticipation by the Lord regarding the controversies we see in this
regard. It is obvious that He always made reference to The Father. He taught us to pray "Our Father".
Paul refers to the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of adoption by which we can say "Abba, Father."
If we have the faith to profess that we are children of God, we would do the same, and when we
are alone with Him, we can even call Him Daddy.
As to the name of the Lord, I often use Yeshua, but I don't get hives over Jesus.
Paul also wrote that the Lord is the Spirit, therefore I speak directly to the ever present Holy
Spirit as Lord. For example, I simply ask, "Lord, help me give a clear, edifying response on this post".
I call these "instant prayers", but they are in truth the ongoing dialog I maintain with Him.

It should matter to everyone at a personal level, and should express the level of intimacy you have
found with Him. This is not something I debate.

The Bible does not. He told Moses I Am That I Am.
Ask Him, are you my Savior?
He answers I Am.
Are you my Consoler?
Are you my Healer?
I Am That

Thanks MM, probably one of the best answers here to those questions in this thread so far. I agree. Well answered. I would rate your post but I am not able to at the moment for some reason. Thanks great answer - WINNER!

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO USE GOD'S NAMES IN VAIN (Exodus 20:7)?

The commandment says ....

Exodus 20:7 [7], You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that takes his name in vain.

God's Word says that we are not to take Gods' name in vain. To take God's name in vain means in Hebrew שׁואשׁוo; shâv' shav; to use God's name in the sense of evil, falsely or deceptively.

Many people also think that to "take the name of the Lord" is to only "speak" the name. The Hebrew word for "take" is נשׂא נסה; nâśâ' nâsâh has many applications Exodus 20:7 that mean to "accept the name of the Lord" to advance the name of the Lord, to carry the name of the Lord, to hold up the name of the Lord, to exalt the name of the Lord, to marry the name of the Lord, to receive the name of the Lord etc...

This deeper definition gives a wider meaning of what it means to "take the name of the Lord". It gives the sense of not only "speaking the name of the Lord in evil and dishonesty" but also to taking the name of the Lord in profession of life to following God while not following what God says thereby bearing false witness to who God is in character.

Two things that the commandment does not say...

1. To "take the name of the Lord" only means to "speak the name of the Lord"
2. We are not to use the "name of the Lord".

If God did not want us to take His name he would not have given His people His name to take. We take the name of God by believing and following God's Word and by living the life God wants us to live and by speaking the words he wants us to speak to those around us. We use His name to magnify him and to show all who God really is. God is love and we take God's name by loving those around us in both word and deed. This is what it means not to take God's name in evil (vain).

God bless.

Hello @LoveGodsWord Would like to share with you something interesting from the book of Revelation, an interesting name that the chief of creation of God is called - Amen.

The is from young's literal translation:
Revelation 3:14 'And to the messenger of the assembly of the Laodiceans write: These things saith the Amen, the witness -- the faithful and true -- the chief of the creation of God;

Here is from the King James Version:
Revelation 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

Many names are generic meaning God or Lord. Usually you will use the name your faithTradition has handed down to you.
In the ancient days of the OT you could further clarify as believing in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob or the God of the Jews. In paganism referring to someone as greek or the gods of the hellenes would clarify whom they worshipped compared to other pagans etc.

Hi All,

IS KNOWING AND USING GOD'S NAME IMPORTANT?

Q1. What name of God do you use in prayer and why?

Jesus. God in the flesh, the earthy representation of God, His very image.

The disciples prayed in that name:

Act 16:18 This went on for several days. Finally, Paul got so upset that he turned and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ, I order you to leave this girl alone!" At once the evil spirit left her.

Q2. Does it matter what we name God in your view and why?

It matters if we don't use the method Jesus taught,

Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Q3. Can we really put a descriptive name on God if God goes beyond description?

The only time in the bible where God actually said "my name is" (to Moses at the burning bush), He essentially refused to give a name, saying "I am", He is the existing one, there is no other God. He does not have a name like us humans. But he came in the person of Jesus, so His human name could be said to be Jesus. I often pray, "Heavenly Father I ask in the name of Jesus".

Hi Agallagher, great post and thanks for the reference in Revelation 3:14. I would add this to the op but have run out of room there (over the posting limit). There is actually two names in this reference you provided. "The Amen" and "the faithful and true witness". Thanks for sharing. Does it matter what we name God in your view and why? Can we really put a descriptive name on God if God goes beyond description? For me I go by the advice of Jesus when he taught his disciples how to pray. Thanks for sharing the scripture and your view.

God bless

LGW, I would agree with you with your view about how Jesus prayed. Always talking to our Father, sometimes I use to talk to Jesus to and tell him how thankful I am though him being the Amen it’s been more directed towards the Father now. You are welcome, have a good night. God bless!

Updated the OP to include God's names in the NT. :)

YHWH has one name. The rest of what was posted in the OP are titles.

Exodus 3

15 Elohim, furthermore, said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ' YHWH, the Elohim of your fathers, the Elohim of Abraham, the Elohim of Isaac, and the Elohim of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations.-

What do you think the OP is saying dear friend?

YHWH / YAHWEH / JEHOVAH [yah-way / ji-hoh-veh]: “HE IS, SELF EXISTENT, LORD” (Deuteronomy 6:4; Daniel 9:14) – strictly speaking, the only proper name for God in the old testament. Translated in English Bibles “LORD” (all capitals) to distinguish it from Adonai, “Lord.” The revelation of the name is first given to Moses “I Am who I Am” (Exodus 3:14). This name specifies an immediacy, a presence. Yahweh is present, accessible, near to those who call on Him for deliverance (Psalm 107:13), forgiveness (Psalm 25:11) and guidance (Psalm 31:3).

God has many names as shown in the OP throughout the scriptures in the old and new testament. So much so that I ran out of room to add them in. Every name in Hebrew or Greek is a description. What does it mean to use God's name in vain in your view?

Please do not post your movies here of others opinions dear friend. This is a bible discussion forum. Let's have a friendly discussion on the scripture please

Why not? The OP was riddled with fallacious doctrinal opinions. I don't but into them. YHWH told us his name quite clearly. The Video actually contains some facts.

Well you have made lots of accusations and claims dear friend when the OP is mainly scripture. They are God's Word not mine that you seem not to agree with. What is it in the OP that you do not believe? Do you believe Jesus is God?

Another misinformed opinion:

The Jewish Encyclopedia of 1901, Volume 12, page 119:

It thus becomes possible to determine with a fair degree of certainty the historical pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton, the results agreeing with the statement of Ex. iii. 14, in which YHWH terms Himself hyha. "I will be", a phrase which is immediately proceeded by the fuller term "I will be that I will be,"

Nonsense. Only God's Word has been quoted, what is it you do not believe? Do you believe Jesus is God?

I wasn't referring to the scripture quotes. I was referring to your opinions.

Opinions are not Elohim's word. Yahshua is the word.

I hope this helps.

I see. So, I quote scriptures in the OP and you post a video of someones opinion and a Jewish Encyclopedia agreeing with me and your not quoting opinion outside of scripture how exactly? To be honest I still do not understand what you have against the scripture provided in the OP. Did you want to explain what you have against the OP? Do you believe Jesus is God?
